1 Reyes 20
1 Benhadad, rey de Siria, reunió todo su ejército, y teniendo consigo treinta y dos reyes, y caballería y carros subió, y poniendo sitio a Samaria la atacó.
And Ben-hadad the king of Syria collected all his army: and [there were] thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2 Envió mensajeros a la ciudad, a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: “Así dice Benhadad:
And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said to him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,
3 Tu plata y tu oro son para mí; tus mujeres y tus gallardos hijos, míos son.”
Thy silver and thy gold [is] mine; thy wives also and thy children, [even] the most comely, [are] mine.
4 Contestó el rey de Israel y dijo: “Como tú dices, señor mío, oh rey, tuyo soy yo y cuanto tengo.”
And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I [am] thine, and all that I have.
5 Vinieron otra vez los mensajeros y dijeron: “Así dice Benhadad: Yo he enviado a decirte: Entrégame tu plata y tu oro, y también tus mujeres y tus hijos.
And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent to thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver to me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6 Mañana, a esta hora, te enviaré mis siervos, que registrarán tu casa y la de tus siervos; y todo lo que es precioso a tus ojos lo tomarán con sus manos, y se lo llevarán”.
Yet I will send my servants to thee to-morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, [that] whatever is pleasant in thy eyes, they shall take [it] in their hand, and carry [it] away.
7 Llamó entonces el rey a todos los ancianos del país y les dijo: “Entended y ved, cómo este hombre busca el mal; porque envió a pedirme mis mujeres, mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro, y yo no le he dicho que no.”
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this [man] seeketh mischief: for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I denied him not.
8 Le dijeron todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo: “No escuches ni consientas.”
And all the elders and all the people said to him, Hearken not [to him], nor consent.
9 Contestó, pues (Acab) a los mensajeros de Benhadad: “Decid a mi señor, el rey: Todo lo que hiciste, pedir a tu siervo al principio, lo haré; pero esto otro no lo puedo hacer.” Y se fueron los mensajeros con esta respuesta.
Wherefore he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first, I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10 Entonces Benhadad envió a decirle: “Así hagan conmigo los dioses, y más todavía, si el polvo de Samaria basta para llenar los puños de toda la gente que me sigue.”
And Ben-hadad sent to him, and said, The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11 Respondió el rey de Israel, diciendo: “Decidle: No se alabe quien se ciñe, sino el que se desciñe.”
And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell [him], Let not him that girdeth on [his harness] boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12 Benhadad recibió esta respuesta cuando estaba bebiendo, él y los reyes, en los pabellones. Dijo, pues, a sus siervos: “¡Listo!” Y se movilizaron contra la ciudad.
And it came to pass, when [Ben-hadad] heard this message as he [was] drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, Set [yourselves in array]. And they set [themselves in array] against the city.
13 En esto se acercó a Acab; rey de Israel, un profeta, que dijo: “Así dice Yahvé: ¿Ves tú esta gran multitud? He aquí que voy a entregarla hoy en tus manos, y sabrás que yo soy Yahvé.”
And behold, there came a prophet to Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I [am] the LORD.
14 Preguntó Acab: “¿Por medio de quién?” Y él respondió: “Así dice Yahvé: Por medio de las tropas de los jefes de las provincias.” “¿Y quién, replicó (Acab), comenzará la batalla?” “Tú”, respondió él.
And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, [Even] by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15 Entonces (Acab) pasó revista a las tropas de los jefes de las provincias, y fueron doscientos treinta y dos; y tras de ellos pasó revista a toda la gente, a todos los hijos de Israel, que eran siete mil.
Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, [even] all the children of Israel, [being] seven thousand.
16 Hicieron una salida al mediodía cuando Benhadad estaba bebiendo y embriagándose en los pabellones, él y los treinta y dos reyes auxiliares.
And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad [was] drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17 Salieron primero las tropas de los jefes de las provincias, y envió Benhadad (observadores), que le avisaron, diciendo: “Unos hombres han salido de Samaria.”
And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 Respondió él: “Si han salido con intenciones pacíficas, prendedlos vivos; y prendedlos también vivos, si han salido para pelear.”
And he said, Whether they have come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they have come out for war, take them alive.
19 Mas las tropas de los jefes de las provincias —y tras ellos los del ejército— que acabaron de salir,
So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20 mataron cada uno al hombre (que se les puso adelante), y huyeron los sirios y fue Israel persiguiéndolos. Benhadad, rey de Siria, escapó en un caballo, con algunos de la caballería.
And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the horsemen.
21 Salió también el rey de Israel y destrozó los caballos con los carros, haciendo en medio de los sirios grandes estragos.
And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22 Se acercó entonces el profeta al rey de Israel y le dijo: “Ve y cobra fuerza, piensa bien y mira lo que has de hacer; porque el rey de Siria va a subir contra ti a la vuelta del año.”
And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said to him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23 Dijeron los siervos del rey de Siria a este: “Los dioses de ellos son dioses de montañas; por eso han podido vencernos; si peleamos contra ellos en tierra llana los venceremos.
And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, Their gods [are] gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 Haz ahora esto: Quita a cada uno de los reyes de su puesto, y pon capitanes en su lugar;
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25 y fórmate un ejército semejante al ejército que has perdido, con otros tantos caballos y otros tantos carros, y pelearemos contra ellos en tierra llana, entonces los venceremos.” Escuchó él su consejo e hizo así.
And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, [and] surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened to their voice, and did so.
26 A la vuelta del año, Benhadad pasó revista a los sirios, y subió a Afec para pelear contra Israel.
And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 También los hijos de Israel fueron revistados; y provistos de víveres marcharon al encuentro de ellos. Acamparon los hijos de Israel frente a ellos, como dos rebaños de cabras, en tanto que los sirios llenaban el país.
And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28 Entonces se acercó el varón de Dios y dijo al rey de Israel: “Así dice Yahvé: Por cuanto dicen los sirios: Yahvé es un dios de montañas y no un dios de valles, entregaré toda esta inmensa multitud en tu mano; y así conoceréis que Yo soy Yahvé.”
And there came a man of God, and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD [is] God of the hills, but he [is] not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.
29 Siete días estuvieron acampados unos frente a otros. Al séptimo día se libró la batalla, y los hijos de Israel mataron a los sirios en un día cien mil hombres de infantería.
And they encamped one over against the other seven days. And [so] it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30 Los restos huyeron a la ciudad de Afec, donde cayó la muralla sobre los veintisiete mil hombres que habían quedado. También Benhadad había huido para refugiarse en la ciudad, y huía de un aposento a otro.
But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and [there] a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men [that were] left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31 Sus siervos le dijeron: “Mira, nosotros hemos oído que los reyes de la casa de Israel son reyes benignos. Pongámonos, pues, sacos sobre los lomos, y sogas al cuello, y salgamos a ver al rey de Israel; tal vez te deje la vida.”
And his servants said to him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel [are] merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: it may be he will save thy life.
32 Se pusieron sacos sobre los lomos y sogas al cuello, y salieron hacia el rey de Israel diciendo: “Tu siervo Benhadad dice: «Déjame, te ruego, la vida».” (Acab) respondió: “¿Vive todavía? Él es mi hermano.”
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and [put] ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, [Is] he yet alive? he [is] my brother.
33 Los hombres tomaron esto por buen agüero, y se apresuraron a tomarle por la palabra, diciendo: “¿Benhadad es tu hermano?” Y él dijo: “Id, traedle.” Salió Benhadad a verlo, y este le hizo subir a su carro.
Now the men diligently observed whether [any thing would come] from him, and did hastily catch [it]: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34 (Benhadad) le dijo: “Las ciudades que mi padre quitó a tu padre, te las restituiré; y tú establecerás para ti en Damasco bazares como los estableció mi padre en Samaria.” “Y yo, (dijo Acab), te dejaré libre a base de esta alianza.” Hizo, pues, alianza con él, y le dejó ir.
And [Ben-hadad] said to him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then [said Ahab], I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35 Entonces uno de los hijos de los profetas dijo a su compañero por orden de Yahvé: “Hiéreme, por favor.” Mas aquel hombre se negó a herirlo,
And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36 por lo cual él le dijo: “Por cuanto no has obedecido la voz de Yahvé, he aquí que te matará un león tan pronto como te apartes de mí.” Y apartándose de él, lo halló un león y lo mató.
Then said he to him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou hast departed from me, a lion will slay thee. And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37 Después encontró a otro hombre, y le dijo: “Hiéreme, por favor.” Y este lo hirió y le hizo una llaga,
Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded [him].
38 entonces se fue el profeta y se puso en el camino del rey, disfrazado con una venda sobre los ojos.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39 Y cuando el rey pasaba, dio gritos hacia el rey y dijo: “Tu siervo había salido para participar en la batalla; y he aquí que apartándose un hombre me entregó un prisionero, diciendo: Guarda a este hombre. Si de cualquier manera llegare a faltar, tu vida responderá por la suya, o pagarás un talento de plata.
And as the king passed by, he cried to the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he shall be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40 Mas andando tu siervo ocupado en esta y otra parte, he aquí que él escapó.” “El rey de Israel le respondió: “Tú mismo has pronunciado tu sentencia.”
And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said to him, So [shall] thy judgment [be]; thyself hast decided [it].
41 Entonces (el profeta) se quitó apresuradamente la venda de sus ojos, y el rey de Israel conoció que era uno de los profetas.
And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he [was] of the prophets.
42 Y este le dijo: “Así dice Yahvé: Por cuanto has dejado escapar de tu mano al hombre que Yo había entregado al anatema, responderá tu vida por su vida, y tu pueblo por su pueblo.”
And he said to him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of [thy] hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 Tras esto el rey de Israel se fue a su casa enojado e irritado; y así llegó a Samaria.
And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.
