1 Reyes 18
1 Muchos días después, en el tercer año, fue dirigida esta palabra de Yahvé a Elías: “Ve, muéstrate a Acab, pues voy a dar lluvia a la tierra.”
So after many days the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year of the drought, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab and I will send rain on the land.”
2 Partió Elías para presentarse a Acab. El hambre era grande en Samaria;
Elijah went to show himself to Ahab; now the famine was severe in Samaria.
3 por lo cual Acab llamó a Abdías, que era mayordomo de su casa. Abdías era muy temeroso de Yahvé,
Ahab called Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Now Obadiah honored Yahweh very much,
4 pues cuando Jezabel exterminaba a los profetas de Yahvé, Abdías tomó a cien profetas y los escondió, cincuenta en una cueva y cincuenta en otra, sustentándolos con pan y agua.
for when Jezebel was killing the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took one hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.
5 Y dijo Acab a Abdías: “Da una vuelta por todo el país hacia todas las fuentes de agua y hacia todos los arroyos; quizás hallaremos pastos para conservar con vida a los caballos y mulos y evitar la destrucción del ganado.”
Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the water springs and brooks. Perhaps we will find grass and save the horses and mules alive, so that we will not lose all the animals.”
6 Y se repartieron entre sí el país para recorrerlo. Acab iba por un camino, y Abdías separadamente por el otro.
So they divided the land between them to pass through it and look for water. Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way.
7 Estando Abdías de camino, he aquí que Elías le salió al encuentro. Le reconoció y cayó sobre su rostro diciendo: “¿Eres Tú, mi señor Elías?”
As Obadiah was on the road, Elijah unexpectedly met him. Obadiah recognized him and lay facedown on the ground. He said, “Is it you, my master Elijah?”
8 Él le respondió: “Yo soy. Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías.”
Elijah answered him, “It is I. Go tell your master, 'Look, Elijah is here.'”
9 Replicó (Abdías): “¿En qué he pecado yo para que tú entregues a tu siervo en manos de Acab, a fin de que me mate?
Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, for him to kill me?
10 Vive Yahvé, tu Dios, que no hay pueblo ni reino adonde no haya enviado mi señor a buscarte; y cuando decían: No está, hacía jurar a aquel reino y a aquel pueblo que no te habían hallado.
As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent men to find you. Whenever a nation or kingdom says, 'Elijah is not here,' Ahab makes them take an oath swearing that they could not find you.
11 ¡Y ahora tú dices: Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías!
Yet now you say, 'Go, tell your master that Elijah is here.'
12 Y, además, cuando yo te deje, el Espíritu de Yahvé te llevará yo no sé dónde, y cuando yo vaya a decírselo a Acab; resulta que él no podrá hallarte y me matará, bien que yo, tu siervo, amo a Yahvé desde mi niñez.
As soon as I am gone from you, the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you some place I do not know. Then when I go and tell Ahab, and when he cannot find you, he will kill me. Yet I, your servant, have worshiped Yahweh from my youth.
13 ¿Acaso nunca han contado a mi señor lo que hice yo cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas de Yahvé; cómo yo escondía cien profetas de Yahvé, cincuenta en una cueva, y cincuenta en otra, sustentándolos con pan y agua?
Has it not been told to you, my master, what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid one hundred of Yahweh's prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?
14 Y ahora tú me dices: Vete y di a tu señor: Ahí está Elías. De seguro me matará.”
Now you say to me, 'Go and tell your master that Elijah is here,' so that he will kill me.”
15 Respondió Elías: “Vive Yahvé de los Ejércitos, a quien yo sirvo, que hoy mismo me presentaré (a Acab).”
Then Elijah responded, “As Yahweh of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to Ahab today.”
16 Marchó, pues, Abdías para encontrar a Acab, y le dio la noticia. Y Acab salió al encuentro de Elías.
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him what Elijah said. Then the king went to meet Elijah.
17 Luego que Acab vio a Elías, le dijo: “¿Tú aquí, perturbador de Israel?”
When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is it you? You are the one who brings trouble to Israel!”
18 Respondió él: “No he perturbado yo a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, porque habéis dejado los mandamientos de Yahvé y tú has ido tras los Baales.
Elijah answered, “I have not brought trouble to Israel, but you and your father's family are the ones who have caused trouble by abandoning the commandments of Yahweh and by following the Baals.
19 Ahora bien, manda congregar conmigo a todo Israel en el monte Carmelo; también a los profetas de Baal, cuatrocientos cincuenta, y a los profetas de Aschera, cuatrocientos, que comen a la mesa de Jezabel.”
Now then, send word and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table.”
20 Convocó, pues, Acab a todos los hijos de Israel, y congregó a los profetas en el monte Carmelo.
So Ahab sent word to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
21 Entonces Elías, acercándose a todo el pueblo, dijo: “¿Hasta cuándo estaréis claudicando hacia dos lados? Si Yahvé es Dios, seguidle; y si lo es Baal, id tras él.” Mas el pueblo no le respondió palabra.
Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you keep changing your mind? If Yahweh is God, follow him. But if Baal is God, then follow him.” Yet the people did not answer him a word.
22 Dijo, pues, Elías al pueblo: “He quedado yo solo de los profetas de Yahvé, cuando los profetas de Baal son cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres.
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, I alone, am left as a prophet of Yahweh, but Baal's prophets are 450 men.
23 Désenos dos toros; y escójanse ellos un toro, y cortándolo en pedazos pónganlo sobre la leña, sin aplicarle fuego, y yo prepararé el otro toro, y lo colocaré sobre la leña, sin poner fuego.
So let them give us two bulls. Let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. Then I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
24 E invocad el nombre de vuestro dios, y yo invocaré el nombre de Yahvé. Aquel dios que respondiere con el fuego, ese sea Dios.” Respondió todo el pueblo: “¡Bien dicho!”
Then you will call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh, and the God who answers by fire, then let him be God.” So all the people answered and said, “This is good.”
25 Dijo entonces Elías a los profetas de Baal: “Escogeos uno de los toros y preparadlo primero, porque sois más numerosos, e invocad el nombre de vuestro dios; mas sin poner fuego.”
So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many people. Then call on the name of your god, but put no fire under the bull.”
26 Tomaron, pues, el toro que les había sido dado y lo prepararon, invocando el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, gritando: “¡Baal, respóndenos!” Pero no había voz, ni quien respondiese, a pesar de que estaban saltando alrededor del altar que habían hecho.
They took the bull that was given to them and prepared it, and they called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us.” But there was no voice, nor anyone who answered. They danced around the altar they had made.
27 Al mediodía se burlaba de ellos Elías, diciendo: “Gritad más fuerte, ya que es dios. Está tal vez meditando, o se ha retirado, o está de viaje; o tal vez duerma y hay que despertarlo.”
At noon Elijah mocked them and said, “Shout out loudly! He is a god! Perhaps he is thinking, or is relieving himself, or he is traveling on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
28 Gritaban, pues, a toda fuerza, sajándose, según su costumbre, con cuchillos y lanzas hasta chorrear la sangre sobre ellos.
So they shouted more loudly, and they cut themselves, as they usually did, with swords and spears, until their blood flowed out over themselves.
29 Pasado ya el mediodía, siguieron delirando hasta (la hora en que suele) ofrecerse el sacrificio sin que hubiese voz, ni quien respondiera ni atendiese.
Midday passed, and they were still raving until the time of offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no voice or anyone to answer; there was no one who paid any attention to their pleadings.
30 Entonces dijo Elías a todo el pueblo: “Acercaos a mí.” Se le acercó todo el pueblo, y él se puso a preparar el altar de Yahvé que estaba derribado.
Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me,” and all the people came near to him. Then he repaired the altar of Yahweh that was lying in ruin.
31 Tomó Elías doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, al cual había sido dirigida la palabra de Yahvé, que decía: “Israel será tu nombre.”
Elijah took twelve stones, each stone representing one of the tribes of the sons of Jacob—it was Jacob to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, “Israel will be your name.”
32 Con estas piedras edificó un altar al nombre de Yahvé, y alrededor del altar hizo una zanja, tan grande como para sembrar dos medidas de semilla.
With the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh and he dug a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seeds.
33 Luego dispuso la leña, y cortando en trozos al toro, lo puso encima de la leña, y dijo: “Llenad cuatro cántaros de agua y vertedla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña.”
He arranged the wood for a fire, cut the bull in pieces, and laid the pieces of the bull on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
34 Después dijo: “Hacedlo por segunda vez”, y lo hicieron por segunda vez. Y repitió: “Hacedlo por tercera vez”, y lo hicieron por tercera vez;
Then he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time. Once more he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time.
35 de suerte que corría el agua alrededor del altar; y también la zanja la hizo llenar de agua.
The water ran around the altar and filled the trench.
36 A la hora (en que suele) ofrecerse el sacrificio (de la tarde), se acercó el profeta Elías, y dijo: “¡Oh Yahvé, Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac y de Israel, hoy sea notorio que Tú eres Dios en Israel y que yo soy tu siervo, y que por orden tuya he hecho todas estas cosas!
It happened at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
37 ¡Respóndeme, Yahvé, respóndeme, para que sepa este pueblo que Tú, Yahvé, eres Dios, que conviertes el corazón de ellos de nuevo (a Ti)!”
Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that these people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again to yourself.”
38 En ese momento bajó fuego de Yahvé y consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el polvo, lamiendo incluso el agua que había en la zanja.
Then the fire of Yahweh fell and consumed the burnt offering, as well as the wood, the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 Viéndolo todo el pueblo cayeron sobre sus rostros y exclamaron: “¡Yahvé es Dios! ¡Yahvé es Dios!”
When all the people saw this, they lay facedown on the ground and said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”
40 Y Elías les dijo: “Prended a los profetas de Baal; que no se escape ni uno de ellos. Ellos los prendieron, y Elías los llevó al torrente Cisón, donde les quitó la vida.
So Elijah said to them, “Take the prophets of Baal. Do not let one of them escape.” So they took them, and Elijah brought the prophets of Baal down to the Kishon River and killed them there.
41 Entonces dijo Elías a Acab: “¡Sube, come y bebe, porque oigo ya gran ruido de lluvia!”
Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of much rain.”
42 Subió Acab, a comer y beber. Elías, empero, subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, e inclinándose hacia la tierra puso su rostro entre sus rodillas,
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Then Elijah went up to the top of Carmel, bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.
43 y dijo a su criado: “Sube y mira hacia el mar.” Subió (el criado), miró y dijo: “No hay nada.” Dijo Elías: “Hazlo siete veces.”
He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” His servant went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” So Elijah said, “Go again, seven times.”
44 Y a la séptima vez dijo: “He aquí una nube, tan pequeña como la palma de la mano de un hombre, que se levanta del mar.” Entonces le dijo Elías: “Anda y di a Acab: «Unce y marcha, a fin de que no te ataje la lluvia».”
At the seventh time the servant said, “Look, there is a cloud going up from the sea, as small as a man's hand.” Elijah replied, “Go up and say to Ahab, 'Make ready your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'”
45 Y pasado un poco de tiempo se oscureció el cielo con nubes y viento, y cayó una gran lluvia; y Acab subió y marchó a Jesreel.
It happened that in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode and went to Jezreel,
46 Entonces la mano de Yahvé se posó sobre Elías, el cual se ciñó los lomos y corrió delante de Acab hasta llegar a Jesreel.
but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah. He tucked his robe in his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
