1 V te dní pa, ko so se učenci množili, vstane godrnjanje Grkov zoper Hebrejce, da se pri vsakdanjej delitvi njih vdove zanemarjajo.
NOW in those days, when the disciples were multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian proselytes against the Hebrews, because their widows were overlooked in the daily distribution.
2 In dvanajsteri pokličejo množico učencev, in rekó: To ne gre, da bi mi besedo Božjo opuščali, in oskrbljevali mize.
Then the twelve assembling the multitude of the disciples, said, It is not fit that we should leave the word of God, to make distribution to the tables.
3 Ozrite se torej, bratje, po sedmih možéh poštenih izmed sebe, kteri so polni Duha svetega in modrosti, da jih postavimo nad tem opravilom;
Therefore, brethren, do ye look out for seven men from among yourselves, the best approved, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint to superintend this business.
4 A mi se bomo molitve in službe besede držali.
But we will devote ourselves constantly to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
5 In ta beseda je bila vsej množici po godi; ter izvolijo Štefana, moža polnega vere in Duha svetega, in Filipa, in Prohora, in Nikanora, Timona in Parmena, in Nikolaja izpreobrnjenca iz Antijohije.
And this saying was very agreeable to all the multitude: and they elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas a proselyte a man of Antioch:
6 Te postavijo pred aposteljne; in molivši, položé na-nje roke.
whom they presented before the apostles: and having prayed, they laid their hands upon them.
7 In beseda Božja je rastla, in število učencev se je silno množilo v Jeruzalemu; tudi velika truma duhovnov je bila pokorna veri.
And the word of God increased: and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied greatly; and a vast body of the priests were obedient to the faith.
8 Štefan pa, poln vere in moči, delal je čudeže in velika znamenja med ljudmi.
Now Stephen, full of faith and of power, wrought great miracles and signs among the people.
9 In vstane jih nekaj iz shajališča, ktero se imenuje Libertinsko in Cirenejsko in Aleksandrinsko, in teh, kteri so bili iz Cilicije in Azije, in prepirali so se s Štefanom;
Then rose up certain men of the synagogue of the freed-men, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, disputing with Stephen.
10 Ali niso se mogli upirati modrosti in Duhu, po kterem je govoril.
And they could not resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
11 Tedaj podšuntajo možé, kteri naj bi rekli: Slišali smo ga govoriti kletvine zoper Mojzesa in Boga.
Then they suborned men to say, We heard him speak blasphemous things against Moses, and against God.
12 Ter nadražijo ljudstvo in starešine in pismarje, in napadejo in zgrabijo ga, in pripeljejo v zbor,
And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and coming upon him, they seized him together, and dragged him to the sanhedrim;
13 In postavijo krive priče, ktere so govorile: Ta človek ne neha govoriti kletvin zoper to sveto mesto in postavo.
and they set up false witnesses, saying, This man doth not cease speaking blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
14 Slišali smo ga namreč, da pravi: Ta Jezus Nazarečan bo razdel to mesto, in premenil bo šege, ktere nam je izročil Mojzes.
for we have heard him affirm, that Jesus the Nazarean, even he, will destroy this place, and change the accustomed ordinances which Moses delivered to us.
15 In pogledavši na-nj vsi, kteri so sedeli v zboru, videli so obličje njegovo kakor obličje angelja.
And fixing their eyes upon him, all who sat in the sanhedrim, beheld his face as the face of an angel.
