1 Glejte, koliko ljubezen nam je dal oče, da se imenujemo otroci Božji. Zato nas svet ne spoznava, ker ni njega spoznal.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Ljubljeni, sedaj smo otroci Božji; in ni se še pokazalo, kaj bodemo; vemo pa, da, kader se pokaže, bodemo njemu enaki, ker ga bodemo videli, kakor je.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 In vsak, kdor ima upanje to v njega, posvečuje se, kakor je on svet.
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Vsak, kdor dela greh, dela tudi krivico; in greh je krivica.
Whoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law; for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 In veste, da se je on prikazal, da vzame grehe naše; in greha ni v njem.
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Vsak, kdor v njem ostane, ne greši; vsak, kdor greši, ni ga videl, in ni ga spoznal.
Whoever abideth in him sinneth not: whoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Otročiči, nihče naj vas ne slepi; kdor dela pravico, je pravičen, kakor je on pravičen.
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 Kdor dela greh, je iz hudiča; ker hudič greši od začetka. Za to se je prikazal sin Božji, da razdene dela hudičeva.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Vsak, kdor je rojen iz Boga, ne dela greha, ker seme njegovo ostaja v njem; in grešiti ne more, ker je rojen iz Boga.
Whoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 V tem so očitni otroci Božji in otroci hudičevi. Vsak, kdor ne dela pravice, ni iz Boga, in kdor ne ljubi brata svojega.
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 Kajti to je oznanilo, katero ste slišali od začetka, da se ljubímo med seboj;
For this is the message that ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Ne kakor je bil Kajn iz hudobnega in je ubil brata svojega; in za kaj ga je ubil? Ker so bila hudobna dela njegova, dela pa brata njegovega pravična.
Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
13 Ne čudite se, bratje moji, če vas svet sovraži.
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 Mi vemo, da smo prešli iz smrti v življenje, ker ljubimo brate; kdor ne ljubi brata, ostaja v smrti.
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not [his] brother, abideth in death.
15 Vsak, kdor sovraži brata svojega, je ljudomorec; in veste, da noben ljudomorec nima večnega življenja, ki bi ostalo v njem. (aiōnios g166)
Whoever hateth his brother, is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. (aiōnios g166)
16 V tem smo spoznali ljubezen, da je on dal dušo svojo za nas; tudi mi moramo dati duše za brate.
By this we perceive the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.
17 Kdor pa ima živež sveta, in gleda brata svojega, ki ima potrebo, in zapre osrčje svoje pred njim, kako ostane ljubezen Božja v njem?
But he who hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 Otročiči moji, ne ljubimo z besedo, ne z jezikom, nego v dejanji in resnici.
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
19 In v tem spoznavamo, da smo iz resnice, in pred njim bodemo pregovorili srca svoja;
And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 Kajti če nas srce obsoja, ker je Bog večji od srca našega, pozna tudi vse.
For if our heart condemneth us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Ljubljeni, če nas srce naše ne obsoja, imamo zaupanje do Boga,
Beloved, if our heart doth not condemn us, [then] have we confidence towards God.
22 In karkoli prosimo, dobimo od njega, ker držimo zapovedi njegove, in delamo, kar mu je po volji.
And whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 In ta je zapoved njegova, da verujmo v ime sina njegovega, Jezusa Kristusa, in ljubimo se med seboj, kakor nam je dal zapoved.
And this is his commandment; That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 In kdor drži zapovedi njegove, ostane v njem, in on v njem. In v tem spoznavamo, da ostaja v nas, iz Duha, katerega nam je dal.
And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And by this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
