< Pregovori 9 >
1 Modrost je zgradila svojo hišo, izklesala je svojih sedem stebrov,
Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 pobila je svoje živali, zmešala je svoje vino, prav tako je pripravila svojo mizo.
She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 Poslala je svoje dekle. Na najvišjih krajih mesta kliče:
She hath sent forth her maidens, she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,
Come, eat ye of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Zapusti nespametne in živi in pojdi po poti razumevanja.
Leave off, ye simple ones, and live; and walk in the way of understanding.
7 Kdor graja posmehljivca, samemu sebi pridobiva sramoto in kdor ošteje zlobnega človeka, sebi pridobiva madež.
He that correcteth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that reproveth a wicked man [getteth] himself a blot.
8 Ne grajaj posmehljivca, da te ne zasovraži. Oštej modrega človeka, in te bo ljubil.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Daj poučevanje modremu človeku in bo še modrejši, pouči pravičnega človeka in pomnožil se bo v znanju.
Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
10 Strah Gospodov je začetek modrosti, in spoznanje svetega je razumevanje.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 Kajti po meni bodo tvoji dnevi pomnoženi in leta tvojega življenja ti bodo narasla.
For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 Če si moder, boš moder zase, toda če se posmehuješ, boš to sam trpel.
If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself: and if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
13 Nespametna ženska je kričava. Naivna je in ničesar ne ve.
The foolish woman is clamorous; [she is] simple, and knoweth nothing.
And she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
To call to them that pass by, who go right on their ways,
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that is void of understanding, she saith to him,
17 »Ukradene vode so sladke in kruh, pojeden na skrivnem, je prijeten.«
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant.
(Sheol )
But he knoweth not that the dead are there; that her guests are in the depths of Sheol. (Sheol )
