1 Mar ne kliče modrost? In razumevanje [ne] dviguje svojega glasu?
Doth not wisdom call? And understanding give forth her voice?
2 Stoji na vrhu visokih krajev, ob poti, na krajih steza.
At the head of high places by the way, Between the paths she hath stood,
3 Kliče pri velikih vratih, pri mestnem vhodu, pri vstopanju, pri vratih.
At the side of the gates, at the mouth of the city, The entrance of the openings, she crieth aloud,
4 Vam, oh možje, kličem in moj glas je k človeškim sinovom.
'Unto you, O men, I call, And my voice [is] unto the sons of men.
5 Oh vi preprosti, razumite modrost, in vi bedaki, bodite razumevajočega srca.
Understand, ye simple ones, prudence, And ye fools, understand the heart,
6 Poslušajte, kajti govorila bom o odličnih stvareh in odpiranje mojih ustnic bodo prave stvari.
Hearken, for noble things I speak, And the opening of my lips [is] uprightness.
7 Kajti moja usta bodo govorila resnico, zlobnost pa je mojim ustnicam ogabnost.
For truth doth my mouth utter, And an abomination to my lips [is] wickedness.
8 Vse besede mojih ust so v pravičnosti, v njih ni ničesar kljubovalnega ali sprevrženega.
In righteousness [are] all the sayings of my mouth, Nothing in them is froward and perverse.
9 So čisto preproste tistemu, ki razume in pravilne tem, ki najdejo spoznanje.
All of them [are] plain to the intelligent, And upright to those finding knowledge.
10 Sprejmite moje poučevanje in ne srebra in spoznanje raje kakor izbrano zlato.
Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 Kajti modrost je boljša kakor rubini in vse stvari, ki se lahko želijo, se ne morejo primerjati k njej.
For better [is] wisdom than rubies, Yea, all delights are not comparable with it.
12 Jaz, modrost, prebivam z razumnostjo, odkrivam spoznanje razumnih domiselnosti.
I, wisdom, have dwelt with prudence, And a knowledge of devices I find out.
13 Gospodov strah je sovražiti zlo. Ponos, aroganco, zlobno pot in kljubovalna usta sovražim.
The fear of Jehovah [is] to hate evil; Pride, and arrogance, and an evil way, And a froward mouth, I have hated.
14 Nasvet je moj in zdrava modrost. Jaz sem razumevanje, jaz imam moč.
Mine [is] counsel and substance, I [am] understanding, I have might.
15 Po meni kraljujejo kralji in princi odrejajo pravico.
By me kings reign, and princes decree righteousness,
16 Po meni vladajo princi in plemiči, celó vsi zemeljski sodniki.
By me do chiefs rule, and nobles, All judges of the earth.
17 Ljubim tiste, ki me ljubijo in tisti, ki me iščejo zgodaj, me bodo našli.
I love those loving me, And those seeking me earnestly do find me.
18 Bogastva in čast sta z menoj; da, trajna bogastva in pravičnost.
Wealth and honour [are] with me, Lasting substance and righteousness.
19 Moj sad je boljši kakor zlato; da, kakor čisto zlato in moje poplačilo kakor izbrano srebro.
Better [is] my fruit than gold, even fine gold, And mine increase than choice silver.
20 Vodim po poti pravičnosti, po sredi stezá sodbe,
In a path of righteousness I cause to walk, In midst of paths of judgment,
21 da lahko povzročim tistim, ki me ljubijo, da podedujejo imetje in jaz bom napolnila njihove zaklade.
To cause my lovers to inherit substance, Yea, their treasures I fill.
22 Gospod me je imel v lasti od začetka svoje poti, pred svojimi deli od davnine.
Jehovah possessed me — the beginning of His way, Before His works since then.
23 Bila sem postavljena od večnosti, od začetka ali preden je bila zemlja.
From the age I was anointed, from the first, From former states of the earth.
24 Ko tam ni bilo globin, sem bila rojena, ko tam ni bilo studencev, obilnih z vodo.
In there being no depths, I was brought forth, In there being no fountains heavy [with] waters,
25 Preden so bile gore nameščene, pred hribi sem bila rojena,
Before mountains were sunk, Before heights, I was brought forth.
26 medtem ko še ni naredil zemlje niti polj niti najvišjega dela iz prahu sveta.
While He had not made the earth, and out-places, And the top of the dusts of the world.
27 Ko je pripravljal nebo, sem bila tam, ko je postavil obod na obličju globine,
In His preparing the heavens I [am] there, In His decreeing a circle on the face of the deep,
28 ko je zgoraj osnoval oblake, ko je utrdil studence globin,
In His strengthening clouds above, In His making strong fountains of the deep,
29 ko je morju dal svoj odlok, da vode ne bodo prekoračile njegove zapovedi, ko je določil temelje zemlje,
In His setting for the sea its limit, And the waters transgress not His command, In His decreeing the foundations of earth,
30 tedaj sem bila poleg njega, kakor nekdo vzgojen z njim in dnevno sem bila njegovo veselje, vedno radostna pred njim,
Then I am near Him, a workman, And I am a delight — day by day. Rejoicing before Him at all times,
31 radostna na naseljivem delu njegovega zemeljskega [kroga] in moja veselja so bila s človeškimi sinovi.
Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth, And my delights [are] with the sons of men.
32 Zdaj mi torej prisluhnite, oh vi otroci, kajti blagoslovljeni so tisti, ki se drže mojih poti.
And now, ye sons, hearken to me, Yea, happy are they who keep my ways.
33 Poslušajte poučevanje, bodite modri in tega ne zavrnite.
Hear instruction, and be wise, and slight not.
34 Blagoslovljen je človek, ki me posluša, ki dnevno bedi pri mojih velikih vratih, ki čaka pri podbojih mojih vrat.
O the happiness of the man hearkening to me, To watch at my doors day by day, To watch at the door-posts of my entrance.
35 Kajti kdor me najde, najde življenje in dosegel bo naklonjenost od Gospoda.
For whoso is finding me, hath found life, And bringeth out good-will from Jehovah.
36 Toda kdor zoper mene greši, škodi svoji lastni duši. Vsi tisti, ki me sovražijo, ljubijo smrt.
And whoso is missing me, is wronging his soul, All hating me have loved death!
