Pregovori 24
1 Ne bodi nevoščljiv zlobnim niti si ne želi biti z njimi.
Be not thou envious of wicked men, And desire not to be with them!
2 Kajti njihovo srce razmišlja uničenje in njihove ustnice govorijo o vragoliji.
For their heart studieth destruction, And their lips speak mischief.
3 Z modrostjo je hiša zgrajena in z razumevanjem je utrjena
Through wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding is it established;
4 in po spoznanju bodo sobe napolnjene z vsemi dragocenimi in prijetnimi bogastvi.
Yea, by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and goodly substance.
5 Moder človek je močan, da, človek spoznanja povečuje moč.
The wise man is strong; Yea, the man of understanding establisheth his strength.
6 Kajti po modrem nasvetu boš vojskoval svojo vojno, in v množici svetovalcev je varnost.
For by wise counsel shalt thou make war, And by the multitude of counsellors cometh success.
7 Modrost je za bedaka previsoka, on svojih ust ne odpira v velikih vratih.
Wisdom is too high for the fool; He openeth not his mouth at the gate.
8 Kdor snuje delati zlo, bo imenovan [za] pogubno osebo.
He that deviseth to do evil Shall be called mischief-master.
9 Misel nespametnosti je greh in posmehljivec je ogabnost ljudem.
The purpose of folly is sin; And a scoffer is an abomination to men.
10 Če na dan nadloge slabiš, je tvoja moč majhna.
If thy spirit faint in the day of adversity, Faint will be thy strength.
11 Če opustiš osvoboditi tiste, ki so potegnjeni v smrt in tiste, ki so pripravljeni, da bodo umorjeni,
Deliver thou those who are dragged to death, And those who totter to the slaughter, —O keep them back!
12 če rečeš: »Glej, tega nismo vedeli, « mar ne bo tisti, ki preudarja srce, to premislil? In tisti, ki varuje tvojo dušo, mar tega ne ve? Mar ne bo vsakemu človeku povrnil glede na njegova dela?
If thou sayst, “Behold, we knew it not!” Doth not he that weigheth the heart observe it? Yea, he that keepeth thy soul knoweth it. And he will render to every man according to his works.
13 Moj sin, jej med, ker je dober in satovje, ki je sladko tvojemu okusu.
Eat honey, my son, for it is good, And the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste;
14 Takšno bo spoznanje modrosti tvoji duši, ko jo najdeš, potem bo nagrada in tvoje pričakovanje ne bo prekinjeno.
So learn thou wisdom for thy soul! When thou hast found it, there shall be a reward, And thy expectation shall not be cut off.
15 Ne preži v zasedi, oh zlobni človek, zoper prebivanje pravičnega, ne pokvari njegovega počivališča,
Plot not, O wicked man! against the habitation of the righteous; Spoil not his resting-place!
16 kajti pravičen človek pade sedemkrat in ponovno vstane, toda zlobni bo padel v vragolijo.
For though the righteous fall seven times, yet shall he rise up again; But the wicked shall fall into mischief.
17 Ne veseli se, kadar tvoj sovražnik pada in naj tvoje srce ne bo veselo, ko se spotika,
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;
18 da ne bi tega videl Gospod in ga to razžali in svoj bes odvrne od njega.
Lest the LORD see, and it displease him, And he turn away his anger from him.
19 Ne razburjaj se zaradi hudobnih ljudi niti ne bodi nevoščljiv na zlobne,
Fret not thyself on account of evil men, Neither be thou envious of the wicked;
20 kajti nobene nagrade ne bo za hudobnega človeka, sveča zlobnih bo ugasnjena.
For there shall be no posterity to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
21 Moj sin, boj se Gospoda in kralja in nič ne imej s tistimi, ki so nagnjeni k spremembi,
My son, fear thou the LORD and the king; And mingle not with them that are given to change!
22 kajti njihova katastrofa bo nenadoma vstala in kdo pozna njihov propad?
For their calamity shall rise up suddenly, And their ruin, coming from them both, in a moment.
23 Tudi te stvari pripadajo modremu. Ni se dobro ozirati na osebe na sodbi.
These also are words of the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
24 Kdor zlobnemu pravi: »Ti si pravičen, « njega bo ljudstvo preklinjalo, narodi ga bodo prezirali,
He that saith to the wicked, “Thou art righteous,” Him shall the people curse; Nations shall abhor him.
25 toda tistim, ki ga oštevajo, bo veselje in nadnje bo prišel dober blagoslov.
But it shall be well with them that punish him, And the blessing of prosperity shall come upon them.
26 Vsak človek bo poljubil ustnice tistega, ki daje pravilen odgovor.
He that giveth a right answer Kisseth the lips.
27 Pripravi svoje delo zunaj in pripravi, [da] ti ustreza na polju in potem zgradi svojo hišo.
Arrange thy work without, And prepare it in thy field: Afterwards thou mayst build thy house.
28 Ne bodi brez razloga priča zoper svojega bližnjega in s svojimi ustnicami ne zavajaj.
Be not a witness without cause against thy neighbor, And deceive not with thy lips.
29 Ne reci: »Tako mu bom storil, kakor je on storil meni. Človeku bom povrnil glede na njegovo delo.«
Say not, “As he hath done to me, So will I do to him; I will render to the man according to his doings.”
30 Šel sem mimo polja lenega in mimo vinograda človeka brez razumevanja
I passed by the field of the slothful, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding,
31 in glej, vse je bilo preraslo s trnjem in koprive so pokrile njegovo obličje in njegov kamniti zid je bil porušen.
And, lo! it was all overgrown with thorns, And the face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.
32 Potem sem videl in to dobro preudaril, pogledal sem na to in prejel poučevanje.
Then I saw, and considered it well; I looked upon it. and received instruction.
33 Še malo spanja, malo dremanja, malo prekrižanih rok za spanje,
“A little sleep, a little slumber! A little folding of the hands to rest!”
34 tako bo tvoja revščina prišla kakor nekdo, ki se klati in tvoja potreba kakor oborožen človek.
So shall poverty come upon thee like a highwayman; Yea, want like an armed man.
