Pregovori 22
1 Dobro ime je bolje izbrati kakor velika bogastva in ljubečo naklonjenost raje kakor srebro in zlato.
A [good] name is rather to be chosen than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 Bogati in revni se srečajo skupaj; Gospod je stvarnik njih vseh.
The rich and the poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
3 Razsoden človek sluti zlo in se skrije, toda naivneži gredo dalje in so kaznovani.
A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
4 S ponižnostjo in strahom Gospodovim so bogastva, čast in življenje.
The reward of humility [and] the fear of the LORD [is] riches, and honour, and life.
5 Trnje in zanke so na poti kljubovalnega; kdor varuje svojo dušo, bo daleč od njih.
Thorns [and] snares are in the way of the froward: he that keepeth his soul shall be far from them.
6 Vzgajaj otroka na poti, po kateri bi moral iti, in ko je star, z nje ne bo zašel.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.
7 Bogati vlada nad revnim in dolžnik je služabnik upniku.
The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 Kdor seje krivičnost, bo žel prazne reči in šiba njegove jeze bo prenehala.
He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
9 Kdor ima radodarno oko, bo blagoslovljen, kajti od svojega kruha daje revnim.
He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
10 Spôdi posmehljivca in spor bo šel ven, da, spor in graja se bosta končala.
Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and ignominy shall cease.
11 Kdor ljubi neoporečnost srca, bo zaradi milosti njegovih ustnic kralj njegov prijatelj.
He that loveth pureness of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
12 Gospodove oči varujejo spoznanje in on ruši besede prestopnika.
The eyes of the LORD preserve [him that hath] knowledge, but he overthroweth the words of the treacherous man.
13 Len človek pravi: »Zunaj je lev, umorjen bom na ulicah.«
The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be murdered in the streets.
14 Usta tujih žensk so globoka jama, kdor je preziran od Gospoda, bo padel vanjo.
The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.
15 Nespametnost je vezana na otrokovo srce, toda svarilna šiba jo bo odgnala daleč od njega.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 Kdor stiska ubogega, da narastejo njegova bogastva in kdor daje bogatim, bosta zagotovo prišla v potrebo.
He that oppresseth the poor to increase his [gain, and] he that giveth to the rich, [cometh] only to want.
17 Nagni svoje uho in prisluhni besedam modrega in svoje srce usmeri k mojemu spoznanju.
Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
18 Kajti to je prijetna stvar, če jih varuješ znotraj sebe, poleg tega bodo pristojale na tvoje ustnice.
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, if they be established together upon thy lips.
19 Da bo tvoje trdno upanje lahko v Gospodu, sem ti to dal spoznati ta dan, celo tebi.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made [them] known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Mar ti nisem napisal odličnih stvari v nasvetih in spoznanju,
Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge;
21 da ti lahko dam spoznati zagotovost besed resnice, da boš lahko odgovoril besede resnice tistim, ki so poslani k tebi?
To make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mayest carry back words of truth to them that send thee?
22 Ne ropaj revnega, ker je reven, niti ne stiskaj prizadetega v velikih vratih.
Rob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:
23 Kajti Gospod bo zagovarjal njihovo pravdo in oplenil duše tistih, ki jih plenijo.
For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.
24 Ne sklepaj prijateljstva z jeznim človekom in z besnim človekom naj ne bi šel,
Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger; and with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:
25 da se ne bi naučil njegovih poti in svoji duši pridobil zanko.
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Ne bodi nekdo izmed tistih, ki udarijo v roko ali izmed tistih, ki so pôroki za dolgove.
Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts:
27 Če nimaš ničesar za plačati, zakaj bi izpod tebe vzel tvojo posteljo?
If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Ne odstranjuj starodavnega mejnika, ki so ga postavili tvoji očetje.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Vidiš marljivega človeka v svojem poklicu? Stal bo pred kralji, ne bo stal pred navadnimi ljudmi.
Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
