1 Vino je zasmehovalec, močna pijača je huda in kdorkoli je s tem zaveden, ni moder.
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
2 Kraljev strah je kakor rjovenje leva; kdorkoli ga draži do jeze, greši zoper svojo lastno dušo.
The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.
3 Za človeka je čast, da odneha od prepira, toda vsak bedak se bo vmešaval.
It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife: but every fool will be quarrelling.
4 Lenuh ne bo oral zaradi razloga mraza, zatorej bo prosil v času žetve in ničesar ne bo imel.
The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 Nasvet v človekovem srcu je podoben globoki vodi, toda razumevajoč človek ga bo izvlekel.
Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.
6 Večina ljudi bo vsakemu razglašala svojo lastno dobroto, toda kdo lahko najde zvestega človeka?
Most men wilt proclaim every one his own kindness: but a faithful man who can find?
7 Pravičen človek hodi v svoji neokrnjenosti, njegovi otroci so blagoslovljeni za njim.
A just man that walketh in his integrity, blessed are his children after him.
8 Kralj, ki sedi na sodnem prestolu, s svojimi očmi vse zlo razkropi proč.
A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
9 Kdo lahko reče: »Svoje srce sem očistil, čist sem pred svojim grehom?«
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
10 Neenake uteži in neenake mere, oboji so Gospodu podobna ogabnost.
Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
11 Celo otrok je spoznan po svojih dejanjih, če so njegova dela čista in če so ta pravilna.
Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
12 Uho, ki sliši in oko, ki vidi, celo oboje je naredil Gospod.
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
13 Ne ljubi spanja, da ne bi prišel v revščino, odpri svoje oči in nasičen boš s kruhom.
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 » To je ničvredno, to je ničvredno, « pravi kupec, toda ko je odšel svojo pot, potem se baha.
It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 Je zlato in množica rubinov, toda ustnice spoznanja so dragocen dragulj.
There is gold, and abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16 Vzemi obleko tistega, ki je pôrok za tujca in vzemi jamstvo od njega za tujo žensko.
Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for strangers.
17 Kruh prevare je sladek človeku, toda njegova usta bodo potem napolnjena z gramozom.
Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 Vsak namen je utrjen s posvetovanjem in vojskuješ se z dobrim nasvetom.
Every purpose is established by counsel: and by wise guidance make thou war,
19 Kdor gre naokrog kakor tožljivec, razodeva skrivnosti, zato se ne vmešavaj s tistim, ki laska s svojimi ustnicami.
He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.
20 Kdorkoli preklinja svojega očeta ali svojo mater, bo njegova svetilka ugasnjena v zatemnjeno temo.
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
21 Dediščina je lahko v začetku naglo pridobljena, toda njen konec ne bo blagoslovljen.
An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
22 Ne reci: »Jaz bom poplačal zlo, « temveč čakaj na Gospoda in rešil te bo.
Say not thou, I will recompense evil: wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
23 Različne uteži so ogabnost Gospodu in varljiva tehtnica ni dobra.
Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
24 Človekovi opravki so od Gospoda, kako lahko potem človek razume svojo lastno pot?
A man’s goings are of the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
25 Zanka je človeku, ki požira to, kar je sveto in da po zaobljubah dela poizvedovanje.
It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry.
26 Moder kralj razkropi zlobne in nadnje prinaša kolo.
A wise king winnoweth the wicked, and bringeth the [threshing] wheel over them.
27 Človeški duh je Gospodova sveča, ki preiskuje vse notranje dele trebuha.
The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the innermost parts of the belly.
28 Usmiljenje in resnica ohranjata kralja in njegov prestol drži pokonci usmiljenje.
Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 Slava mladeničev je njihova moč, lepota starcev pa je siva glava.
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the hoary head.
30 Modrica od rane očiščuje zlo, tako storijo udarci biča notranjim delom trebuha.
Stripes that wound cleanse away evil: and strokes [reach] the innermost parts of the belly.
