1 Boljši je ubogi, ki hodi v svoji neokrnjenosti, kakor kdor je sprevržen v svojih ustnicah in je bedak.
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity than he that perverse in his lips and is a fool.
2 Tudi, da bi bila duša brez spoznanja, to ni dobro in kdor hiti s svojimi stopali, greši.
Also, that the soul be without knowledge is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.
3 Človekova nespametnost izkrivlja njegovo pot in njegovo srce se razburja zoper Gospoda.
The foolishness of man subverteth his way; and his heart fretteth against the LORD.
4 Premoženje dela mnoge prijatelje, toda reven je ločen od svojega soseda.
Wealth addeth many friends: but the poor is separated from his friend.
5 Kriva priča ne bo nekaznovana in kdor govori laži, ne bo pobegnil.
A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall not escape.
6 Mnogi bodo milo prosili naklonjenosti od princev in vsak človek je prijatelj tistemu, ki daje darila.
Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
7 Ubogega sovražijo vsi njegovi bratje, koliko bolj gredo njegovi prijatelji daleč od njega? Zasleduje jih z besedami, vendar mu manjkajo.
All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him! he pursueth [them with] words, [but] they are gone.
8 Kdor pridobiva modrost, ljubi svojo lastno dušo, kdor ohranja razumevanje, bo našel dobro.
He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.
9 Kriva priča ne bo nekaznovana in kdor govori laži, bo propadel.
A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall perish.
10 Veselje ni spodobno za bedaka, veliko manj za služabnika, da vlada nad princi.
Delicate living is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11 Človekova preudarnost odlaša njegovo jezo in to je njegova slava, da gre čez prestopek.
The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
12 Kraljev bes je kakor rjovenje leva, toda njegova naklonjenost je kakor rosa na travo.
The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.
13 Nespameten sin je katastrofa svojega očeta in ženini spori so nenehno kapljanje.
A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
14 Hiša in bogastva so dediščina od očetov, razsodna žena pa je od Gospoda.
House and riches are an inheritance from fathers: but a prudent wife is from the LORD.
15 Lenoba meče v globoko spanje, brezdelna duša pa bo trpela lakoto.
Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.
16 Kdor varuje zapoved, varuje svojo lastno dušo, toda kdor prezira njegove poti, bo umrl.
He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul: [but] he that is careless of his ways shall die.
17 Kdor ima do revnega sočutje, posoja Gospodu in kar je dal, mu bo on poplačal.
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD, and his good deed will he pay him again.
18 Karaj svojega sina, dokler je upanje in naj tvoja duša ne prizanaša zaradi njegovega joka.
Chasten thy son, seeing there is hope; and set not thy heart on his destruction.
19 Človek velikega besa bo trpel kaznovanje, kajti če ga osvobodiš, boš vendarle moral to ponovno storiti.
A man of great wrath shall bear the penalty: for if thou deliver [him], thou must do it yet again.
20 Prisluhni nasvetu in sprejmi poučevanje, da boš lahko moder v svojem zadnjem koncu.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
21 Mnogo naklepov je v človekovem srcu, vendarle [je] Gospodova namera, ki bo obstala.
There are many devices in a man’s heart; but the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.
22 Človekova želja je njegova prijaznost in reven človek je boljši kakor lažnivec.
The desire of a man is [the measure of] his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 Strah Gospodov se nagiba k življenju in kdor ga ima, bo ostal nasičen, ne bo obiskan z zlom.
The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and he [that hath it] shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
24 Len človek skriva svojo roko v svojem naročju in jo bo komaj ponovno ponesel k svojim ustom.
The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
25 Udari posmehljivca in preprosti se bo čuval in grajaj nekoga, ki ima razumevanje in bo razumel spoznanje.
smite a scorner, and the simple will learn prudence: and reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.
26 Kdor slabi svojega očeta in preganja svojo mater, je sin, ki povzroča sramoto in prinaša grajo.
He that spoileth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame and bringeth reproach.
27 Nehaj, moj sin, poslušati pouk, ki povzroča, da zaideš od besed spoznanja.
Cease, my son, to hear instruction [only] to err from the words of knowledge.
28 Brezbožna priča zasmehuje sodbo in usta zlobnega požirajo krivičnost.
A worthless witness mocketh at judgment: and the mouth of the wicked swalloweth iniquity.
29 Sodbe so pripravljene za posmehljivce in udarci z bičem za hrbte bedakov.
Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
