1 Ljubljeni, ne verjemite vsakemu duhu, temveč duhove preizkušajte, ali so od Boga, ker je mnogo lažnih prerokov odšlo v svet.
Beloved! not in every spirit, believe ye, but test the spirits, whether they are, of God; because, many false prophets, have gone out into the world.
2 S tem prepoznate Božjega Duha: »Vsak duh, ki priznava, da je Jezus Kristus prišel v mesu, je od Boga;
Hereby, do ye perceive the Spirit of God: —every spirit that confesseth Jesus Christ as having come, in flesh, is, of God;
3 in noben duh, ki ne priznava, da je Jezus Kristus prišel v mesu, ni od Boga; in to je ta duh antikrista, o katerem ste slišali, da naj bi prišel; in je celó že sedaj na svetu.«
And, every spirit that doth not confess Jesus, of God, is not. And, this, is the [spirit] of the Antichrist, touching which ye have heard that it cometh: even now, is it, in the world, already.
4 Vi ste od Boga, majhni otroci in ste jih premagali, ker je večji tisti, ki je v vas, kakor ta, ki je v svetu.
Ye, are, of God, dear children, and have overcome them; because, greater, is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 Oni so od sveta; zaradi tega govorijo o svetu in svet jih posluša.
They, are, of the world: For this cause, of the world, they speak, and the world, unto them, doth hearken.
6 Mi [pa] smo od Boga; kdor pozna Boga, nas posluša, kdor [pa] ni od Boga, nas ne posluša. S tem spoznamo duha resnice in duha zmote.
We, are, of God: he that is getting to understand God, hearkeneth unto us, —whoso is not of God, hearkeneth not unto us: from this, perceive we—the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Ljubljeni, ljubimo drug drugega, kajti ljubezen je od Boga, in vsak, kdor ljubi, je rojen iz Boga in pozna Boga.
Beloved! let us be loving one another; because, love, is, of God, and, whosoever loveth, of God, hath been born, and is getting to understand God:
8 Kdor ne ljubi, ne pozna Boga, kajti Bog je ljubezen.
He that doth not love, doth not understand God, because, God, is, love.
9 V tem je bila do nas jasno pokazana Božja ljubezen, zato ker je ta Bog poslal svojega edinorojenega Sina v svet, da bi mi lahko živeli po njem.
Herein, hath the love of God in us, been made manifest, that, his only-begotten Son, God sent into the world, in order that we might live through him.
10 V tem je ljubezen, ne da smo mi ljubili Boga, temveč, da nas je on ljubil in poslal svojega Sina, da postane spravna daritev za naše grehe.
Herein, is love: not that, we, have loved God, but that, he, loved us, and sent forth his Son, as a propitiation concerning our sins.
11 Ljubljeni, če nas je Bog tako ljubil, bi morali tudi mi ljubiti drug drugega.
Beloved! If, in this way, God, loved us, we also, ought to love, one another.
12 Noben človek nikoli ni videl Boga. Če ljubimo drug drugega, Bog prebiva v nas in je njegova ljubezen izpopolnjena v nas.
Upon God, hath no one, at any time, gazed: If we love one another, God, in us, abideth, and, his love, hath been perfected within us.
13 S tem vemo, da prebivamo v njem in on v nas, ker nam je dal od svojega Duha.
Hereby, perceive we—that, in him, are we abiding, and, he, in us, —in that, of his Spirit, hath he given unto us.
14 In videli smo in pričujemo, da je Oče poslal Sina, da bi bil Odrešenik sveta.
And, we, for ourselves have gazed, and are bearing witness—that, the Father, sent forth the Son, as Saviour of the world.
15 Kdorkoli bo priznal, da je Jezus Božji Sin, Bog prebiva v njem in on v Bogu.
Whosoever shall confess, that, Jesus [Christ] is the Son of God, God, in him, abideth, and, he, in God.
16 In mi smo spoznali in verovali ljubezni, ki jo ima Bog do nas. Bog je ljubezen in kdor prebiva v ljubezni, prebiva v Bogu in Bog v njem.
And, we, have come to understand and to trust the love which, God, hath, in us. God, is, love; and, he that abideth in love, in God, abideth, and, God, in him [abideth].
17 V tem se je naša ljubezen dovršila, da imamo lahko srčnost na dan sodbe; ker kakor je on, tako smo mi na tem svetu.
Herein, hath love with us, been made perfect, —in order that, boldness, we might have in the day of judging, —in that, just as, He, is, we also, are, in this world.
18 V ljubezni ni nobenega strahu, temveč popolna ljubezen izganja strah; ker strah vsebuje muko. Kdor se boji, ni izpopolnjen v ljubezni.
Fear, existeth not, in love, but, perfect love, casteth fear, outside; because, fear, hath correction: he that feareth, hath not been made perfect, in love.
19 Mi ga ljubimo, ker je najprej on ljubil nas.
We, love, because, he, first loved us: —
20 Če človek reče: »Ljubim Boga, « pa sovraži svojega brata, je lažnivec; kajti kdor ne ljubi svojega brata, ki ga je videl, kako lahko ljubi Boga, ki ga ni videl?
If one should say, I love God, and should be hating, his brother, false, is he; for, he that doth not love his brother, whom he hath seen, God, whom he hath not seen, he cannot love!
21 In od njega imamo to zapoved: »Da kdor ljubi Boga, ljubi tudi svojega brata.«
And, this commandment, have we from him, —that, he who loveth God, love, his brother also.
