Књига проповедникова 4
1 Опет видех све неправде које се чине под сунцем, и гле, сузе оних којима се чини неправда, и немају ко би их потешио ни снаге да се избаве из руку оних који им чине неправду; немају никога да их потеши.
Then I turned and saw all the oppressions which take place under the sun; and, behold, there were the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and from the hand of their oppressors there was violence, and they had no comforter.
2 Зато хвалих мртве који већ помреше више него живе који још живе.
Therefore I praised the dead, who have been long ago dead, more than the living, who are yet alive.
3 Али је бољи и од једних и од других онај који још није постао, који није видео зло што бива под сунцем.
Yea, better than both of them is he who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work which is done under the sun.
4 Јер видех сваки труд и свако добро дело да од њега бива завист човеку од ближњег његовог. И то је таштина и мука духу.
And I saw all labor, and all success in work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity, and striving after wind.
5 Безумник склапа руке своје, и једе своје тело:
The fool foldeth his hands together and eateth his own flesh.
6 Боља је једна грст у миру него обе грсти с трудом и муком у духу.
Better is a hand full of quietness, than both hands full of weariness and striving after wind.
7 Опет видех таштину под сунцем:
Then I turned and saw other vanity under the sun.
8 Има ко је сам, инокосан, нема ни сина ни брата, и опет нема краја труду његовом, и очи његове не могу да се насите богатства; а не мисли: За кога се мучим и одузимам својој души добра? И то је таштина и зао посао.
There is one who is alone, and no one with him; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end to all his labor, and his eye is not satisfied with riches. “For whom, then [[saith he]], do I labor and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity; yea, it is an evil thing!
9 Боље је двојици него једном, јер имају добру добит од свог труда.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
10 Јер ако један падне, други ће подигнути друга свог; а тешко једном! Ако падне, нема другог да га подигне.
For if they fall, the one will lift his fellow up; but woe to him who is alone when he falleth, and hath not another to help him up!
11 Још ако двојица спавају заједно, греје један другог; а један како ће се згрејати?
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat; but how can one be warm alone?
12 И ако би ко надјачао једног, двојица ће му одолети; и трострука врпца не кида се лако.
And if an enemy prevail against one, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 Боље је дете убого, а мудро него цар стар, а безуман, који се већ не зна поучити.
Better is a child poor but wise, than a king old and foolish, who will no more be admonished.
14 Јер један излази из тамнице да царује, а други који се роди да царује осиромаши.
For out of prison cometh forth such a one to reign; for in his own kingdom he was born a poor man.
15 Видех све живе који ходе под сунцем где пристају за дететом другим, које ће ступити на његово место.
I saw that all the living, who walk under the sun, were with the child who stood up in his stead.
16 Нема краја народу који беше пред њим, а који после настану неће се радовати њему. И то је таштина и мука духу.
There was no end to all the people before whom he went forth; yet they that come afterwards shall not rejoice in him. This also is vanity, and striving after wind.
