Paul a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for promoting the faith of God's chosen people, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness:

in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before all ages; (aiōnios g166)

and hath in his own times manifested his word, by the preaching, with which I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour:

For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou mightest set in order what remained, and ordain elders in every city as I directed thee:
6 tasmaad yo naro. anindita ekasyaa yo. sita. h svaamii vi"svaasinaam apacayasyaavaadhyatvasya vaa do. se. naaliptaanaa nca santaanaanaa. m janako bhavati sa eva yogya. h|
to wit, if any one be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of debauchery, or unruly.
7 yato hetoradyak. se. ne"svarasya g. rhaadyak. se. nevaanindaniiyena bhavitavya. m| tena svecchaacaari. naa krodhinaa paanaasaktena prahaarake. na lobhinaa vaa na bhavitavya. m
For a bishop must be blameless as the steward of God, not self-willed, not passionate, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of sordid gain:
8 kintvatithisevakena sallokaanuraagi. naa viniitena nyaayyena dhaarmmike. na jitendriye. na ca bhavitavya. m,
but hospitable, benevolent, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 upade"se ca vi"svasta. m vaakya. m tena dhaaritavya. m yata. h sa yad yathaarthenopade"sena lokaan vinetu. m vighnakaari. na"sca niruttaraan karttu. m "saknuyaat tad aava"syaka. m|
holding fast the faithful word, according as he hath been taught, that he may be able both to instruct in sound doctrine, and to convince gainsayers.
10 yataste bahavo. avaadhyaa anarthakavaakyavaadina. h prava ncakaa"sca santi vi"se. sata"schinnatvacaa. m madhye kecit taad. r"saa lokaa. h santi|
For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped:
11 te. saa nca vaagrodha aava"syako yataste kutsitalaabhasyaa"sayaanucitaani vaakyaani "sik. sayanto nikhilaparivaaraa. naa. m sumati. m naa"sayanti|
who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain:
12 te. saa. m svade"siiya eko bhavi. syadvaadii vacanamidamuktavaan, yathaa, kriitiiyamaanavaa. h sarvve sadaa kaapa. tyavaadina. h| hi. msrajantusamaanaaste. alasaa"scodarabhaarata. h||
as said one of themselves, a prophet of their own, "The Cretans are always liars, mischievous beasts, sluggish gluttons."
13 saak. syametat tathya. m, ato hetostva. m taan gaa. dha. m bhartsaya te ca yathaa vi"svaase svasthaa bhaveyu
This testimony is true: for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be found in the faith;
14 ryihuudiiyopaakhyaane. su satyamatabhra. s.taanaa. m maanavaanaam aaj naasu ca manaa. msi na nive"sayeyustathaadi"sa|
not attending to Jewish fables, and the precepts of men who turn away from the truth.
15 "suciinaa. m k. rte sarvvaa. nyeva "suciini bhavanti kintu kala"nkitaanaam avi"svaasinaa nca k. rte "suci kimapi na bhavati yataste. saa. m buddhaya. h sa. mvedaa"sca kala"nkitaa. h santi|
To the pure indeed all things are pure; but to the polluted and unbelieving nothing is pure; even their mind and conscience is polluted.
16 ii"svarasya j naana. m te pratijaananti kintu karmmabhistad ana"ngiikurvvate yataste garhitaa anaaj naagraahi. na. h sarvvasatkarmma. na"scaayogyaa. h santi|
They profess to know God, but in works deny Him, being abominable and disobedient, and to every thing that is good void of understanding.
