I say the truth in Christ, I lye not, (my conscience bearing me witness in the holy Ghost, )
2 mamaantarati"sayadu. hkha. m nirantara. m kheda"sca
that I have great grief and continual sorrow in my heart:
3 tasmaad aha. m svajaatiiyabhraat. r.naa. m nimittaat svaya. m khrii. s.taacchaapaakraanto bhavitum aiccham|
for I could wish that I myself were made a curse after the manner of Christ, for my brethren, my kindred according to the flesh;
4 yatasta israayelasya va. m"saa api ca dattakaputratva. m tejo niyamo vyavasthaadaana. m mandire bhajana. m pratij naa. h pit. rpuru. saga. na"scaite. su sarvve. su te. saam adhikaaro. asti|
who are Israelites, whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the form of divine worship, and the promises:
5 tat kevala. m nahi kintu sarvvaadhyak. sa. h sarvvadaa saccidaananda ii"svaro ya. h khrii. s.ta. h so. api "saariirikasambandhena te. saa. m va. m"sasambhava. h| (aiōn )
whose are the fathers, and of whom, as to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all God blessed for ever. Amen. (aiōn )
6 ii"svarasya vaakya. m viphala. m jaatam iti nahi yatkaara. naad israayelo va. m"se ye jaataaste sarvve vastuta israayeliiyaa na bhavanti|
Not that the word of God hath failed. For they are not all Israel, who are descended from Israel.
7 aparam ibraahiimo va. m"se jaataa api sarvve tasyaiva santaanaa na bhavanti kintu ishaako naamnaa tava va. m"so vikhyaato bhavi. syati|
Nor because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children of promise: but "in Isaac shall thy seed be called."
8 arthaat "saariirikasa. msargaat jaataa. h santaanaa yaavantastaavanta eve"svarasya santaanaa na bhavanti kintu prati"srava. naad ye jaayante taeve"svarava. m"so ga. nyate|
That is, not the children of the flesh are the children of God, but the children of the promise are accounted for the seed.
9 yatastatprati"srute rvaakyametat, etaad. r"se samaye. aha. m punaraagami. syaami tatpuurvva. m saaraayaa. h putra eko jani. syate|
For this is the word of the promise, "According to this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son:"
10 aparamapi vadaami svamano. abhilaa. sata ii"svare. na yanniruupita. m tat karmmato nahi kintvaahvayitu rjaatametad yathaa siddhyati
and not to her only; but Rebecca also being with child by our father Isaac,
11 tadartha. m ribkaanaamikayaa yo. sitaa janaikasmaad arthaad asmaakam ishaaka. h puurvvapuru. saad garbhe dh. rte tasyaa. h santaanayo. h prasavaat puurvva. m ki nca tayo. h "subhaa"subhakarmma. na. h kara. naat puurvva. m
(when the children were not yet born, nor had done either good or evil, that the purpose of God according to his choice might abide, not on account of works, but of Him that calleth, ) it was said to her, the elder shall serve the younger:
12 taa. m pratiida. m vaakyam ukta. m, jye. s.tha. h kani. s.tha. m sevi. syate,
as it is written,
13 yathaa likhitam aaste, tathaapye. saavi na priitvaa yaakuubi priitavaan aha. m|
"I loved Jacob and I hated Esau."
14 tarhi vaya. m ki. m bruuma. h? ii"svara. h kim anyaayakaarii? tathaa na bhavatu|
What shall we say then? Is there injustice in God?
15 yata. h sa svaya. m muusaam avadat; aha. m yasmin anugraha. m cikiir. saami tamevaanug. rhlaami, ya nca dayitum icchaami tameva daye|
God forbid! For He saith to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."
16 ataevecchataa yatamaanena vaa maanavena tanna saadhyate dayaakaari. ne"svare. naiva saadhyate|
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
17 phirau. ni "saastre likhati, aha. m tvaddvaaraa matparaakrama. m dar"sayitu. m sarvvap. rthivyaa. m nijanaama prakaa"sayitu nca tvaa. m sthaapitavaan|
And the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, for this very purpose have I raised thee up, that I may shew forth my power in thee, and that my name may be declared through all the earth.
18 ata. h sa yam anugrahiitum icchati tamevaanug. rhlaati, ya nca nigrahiitum icchati ta. m nig. rhlaati|
So then He hath mercy on whom He pleaseth, and whom He will, He hardeneth.
19 yadi vadasi tarhi sa do. sa. m kuto g. rhlaati? tadiiyecchaayaa. h pratibandhakatva. m kartta. m kasya saamarthya. m vidyate?
Thou wilt say then, Why doth he yet blame us? who hath resisted his will?
20 he ii"svarasya pratipak. sa martya tva. m ka. h? etaad. r"sa. m maa. m kuta. h s. r.s. tavaan? iti kathaa. m s. r.s. tavastu sra. s.tre ki. m kathayi. syati?
Nay but, O man, who art thou, that disputest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?
21 ekasmaan m. rtpi. n.daad utk. r.s. taapak. r.s. tau dvividhau kala"sau karttu. m ki. m kulaalasya saamarthya. m naasti?
Hath not the potter power over the clay, out of the same mass to make one vessel to honor and another to dishonor?
22 ii"svara. h kopa. m prakaa"sayitu. m nija"sakti. m j naapayitu ncecchan yadi vinaa"sasya yogyaani krodhabhaajanaani prati bahukaala. m diirghasahi. s.nutaam aa"srayati;
And what if God, though resolved to shew his displeasure at last, and to make known his power, yet bore with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction?
23 apara nca vibhavapraaptyartha. m puurvva. m niyuktaanyanugrahapaatraa. ni prati nijavibhavasya baahulya. m prakaa"sayitu. m kevalayihuudinaa. m nahi bhinnade"sinaamapi madhyaad
and that He might make known the riches of his glory in the vessels of mercy, which He hath prepared for glory?
24 asmaaniva taanyaahvayati tatra tava ki. m?
whom He hath also called, even us, not only of the Jews, but also of the Gentiles.
25 ho"seyagranthe yathaa likhitam aaste, yo loko mama naasiit ta. m vadi. syaami madiiyaka. m| yaa jaati rme. apriyaa caasiit taa. m vadi. syaamyaha. m priyaa. m|
As He saith also in Hosea, I will call them my people, who were not my people, and her beloved, who was not beloved.
26 yuuya. m madiiyalokaa na yatreti vaakyamaucyata| amare"sasya santaanaa iti khyaasyanti tatra te|
And in the place where it was said to them, Ye are not my people, there shall they be called the children of the living God.
27 israayeliiyaloke. su yi"saayiyo. api vaacametaa. m praacaarayat, israayeliiyava. m"saanaa. m yaa sa. mkhyaa saa tu ni"scita. m| samudrasikataasa. mkhyaasamaanaa yadi jaayate| tathaapi kevala. m lokairalpaistraa. na. m vraji. syate|
And Esaias crieth out concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant shall be saved.
28 yato nyaayena sva. m karmma pare"sa. h saadhayi. syati| de"se saeva sa. mk. sepaannija. m karmma kari. syati|
For in finishing the account and cutting it short in righteousness, the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.
29 yi"saayiyo. aparamapi kathayaamaasa, sainyaadhyak. sapare"sena cet ki ncinnoda"si. syata| tadaa vaya. m sidomevaabhavi. syaama vini"scita. m| yadvaa vayam amoraayaa agami. syaama tulyataa. m|
And as Esaias said before, "Except the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and we had been made like unto Gomorrah."
30 tarhi vaya. m ki. m vak. syaama. h? itarade"siiyaa lokaa api pu. nyaartham ayatamaanaa vi"svaasena pu. nyam alabhanta;
What shall we say then? that the Gentiles, who sought not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith;
31 kintvisraayellokaa vyavasthaapaalanena pu. nyaartha. m yatamaanaastan naalabhanta|
but Israel, who followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness: why?
32 tasya ki. m kaara. na. m? te vi"svaasena nahi kintu vyavasthaayaa. h kriyayaa ce. s.titvaa tasmin skhalanajanake paa. saa. ne paadaskhalana. m praaptaa. h|
because they sought it not by faith, but by the works of the law, for they stumbled at that stumbling-stone;
33 likhita. m yaad. r"sam aaste, pa"sya paadaskhalaartha. m hi siiyoni prastarantathaa| baadhaakaara nca paa. saa. na. m paristhaapitavaanaham| vi"svasi. syati yastatra sa jano na trapi. syate|
as it is written, "Behold I lay in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence:" and again, "Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed."
