Then Jesus said to the people and to his disciples:
2 adhyaapakaa. h phiruu"sina"sca muusaasane upavi"santi,
The scribes and the Pharisees have the authority of Moses;
3 ataste yu. smaan yadyat mantum aaj naapayanti, tat manyadhva. m paalayadhva nca, kintu te. saa. m karmmaanuruupa. m karmma na kurudhva. m; yataste. saa. m vaakyamaatra. m saara. m kaaryye kimapi naasti|
All things, then, which they give you orders to do, these do and keep: but do not take their works as your example, for they say and do not.
4 te durvvahaan gurutaraan bhaaraan badvvaa manu. syaa. naa. m skandhepari samarpayanti, kintu svayama"ngulyaikayaapi na caalayanti|
They make hard laws and put great weights on men's backs; but they themselves will not put a finger to them.
5 kevala. m lokadar"sanaaya sarvvakarmmaa. ni kurvvanti; phalata. h pa. t.tabandhaan prasaaryya dhaarayanti, svavastre. su ca diirghagranthiin dhaarayanti;
But all their works they do so as to be seen by men: for they make wide their phylacteries, and the edges of their robes,
6 bhojanabhavana uccasthaana. m, bhajanabhavane pradhaanamaasana. m,
And the things desired by them are the first places at feasts, and the chief seats in the Synagogues,
7 ha. t.the namaskaara. m gururiti sambodhana ncaitaani sarvvaa. ni vaa nchanti|
And words of respect in the market-places, and to be named by men, Teacher.
8 kintu yuuya. m gurava iti sambodhaniiyaa maa bhavata, yato yu. smaakam eka. h khrii. s.taeva guru
But you may not be named Teacher: for one is your teacher, and you are all brothers.
9 ryuuya. m sarvve mitho bhraatara"sca| puna. h p. rthivyaa. m kamapi piteti maa sambudhyadhva. m, yato yu. smaakameka. h svargasthaeva pitaa|
And give no man the name of father on earth: because one is your Father, who is in heaven.
10 yuuya. m naayaketi sambhaa. sitaa maa bhavata, yato yu. smaakameka. h khrii. s.taeva naayaka. h|
And you may not be named guides: because one is your Guide, even Christ.
11 apara. m yu. smaaka. m madhye ya. h pumaan "sre. s.tha. h sa yu. smaan sevi. syate|
But let the greatest among you be your servant.
12 yato ya. h svamunnamati, sa nata. h kari. syate; kintu ya. h ka"scit svamavanata. m karoti, sa unnata. h kari. syate|
And whoever makes himself high will be made low, and whoever makes himself low will be made high.
13 hanta kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuya. m manujaanaa. m samak. sa. m svargadvaara. m rundha, yuuya. m svaya. m tena na pravi"satha, pravivik. suunapi vaarayatha| vata kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca yuuya. m chalaad diirgha. m praarthya vidhavaanaa. m sarvvasva. m grasatha, yu. smaaka. m ghoratarada. n.do bhavi. syati|
But a curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you are shutting the kingdom of heaven against men: for you do not go in yourselves, and those who are going in, you keep back.
14 hanta kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuyameka. m svadharmmaavalambina. m karttu. m saagara. m bhuuma. n.dala nca pradak. si. niikurutha,
A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you go about land and sea to get one disciple and, having him, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
16 vata andhapathadar"sakaa. h sarvve, yuuya. m vadatha, mandirasya "sapathakara. naat kimapi na deya. m; kintu mandirasthasuvar. nasya "sapathakara. naad deya. m|
A curse is on you, blind guides, who say, Whoever takes an oath by the Temple, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the gold of the Temple, he is responsible.
17 he muu. dhaa he andhaa. h suvar. na. m tatsuvar. napaavakamandiram etayorubhayo rmadhye ki. m "sreya. h?
You foolish ones and blind: which is greater, the gold, or the Temple which makes the gold holy?
18 anyacca vadatha, yaj navedyaa. h "sapathakara. naat kimapi na deya. m, kintu taduparisthitasya naivedyasya "sapathakara. naad deya. m|
And, Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the offering which is on it, he is responsible.
19 he muu. dhaa he andhaa. h, naivedya. m tannaivedyapaavakavediretayorubhayo rmadhye ki. m "sreya. h?
You blind ones: which is greater, the offering, or the altar which makes the offering holy?
20 ata. h kenacid yaj navedyaa. h "sapathe k. rte taduparisthasya sarvvasya "sapatha. h kriyate|
He, then, who takes an oath by the altar, takes it by the altar and by all things on it.
21 kenacit mandirasya "sapathe k. rte mandiratannivaasino. h "sapatha. h kriyate|
And he who takes an oath by the Temple, takes it by the Temple and by him whose house it is.
22 kenacit svargasya "sapathe k. rte ii"svariiyasi. mhaasanataduparyyupavi. s.tayo. h "sapatha. h kriyate|
And he who takes an oath by heaven, takes it by the seat of God, and by him who is seated on it.
23 hanta kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuya. m podinaayaa. h sitacchatraayaa jiirakasya ca da"samaa. m"saan dattha, kintu vyavasthaayaa gurutaraan nyaayadayaavi"svaasaan parityajatha; ime yu. smaabhiraacara. niiyaa amii ca na la. mghaniiyaa. h|
A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make men give a tenth of all sorts of sweet-smelling plants, but you give no thought to the more important things of the law, righteousness, and mercy, and faith; but it is right for you to do these, and not to let the others be undone.
24 he andhapathadar"sakaa yuuya. m ma"sakaan apasaarayatha, kintu mahaa"ngaan grasatha|
You blind guides, who take out a fly from your drink, but make no trouble over a camel.
25 hanta kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuya. m paanapaatraa. naa. m bhojanapaatraa. naa nca bahi. h pari. skurutha; kintu tadabhyantara. m duraatmatayaa kalu. se. na ca paripuur. namaaste|
A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you make clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of violent behaviour and uncontrolled desire.
26 he andhaa. h phiruu"silokaa aadau paanapaatraa. naa. m bhojanapaatraa. naa ncaabhyantara. m pari. skuruta, tena te. saa. m bahirapi pari. skaari. syate|
You blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the plate, so that the outside may become equally clean.
27 hanta kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuya. m "sukliik. rta"sma"saanasvaruupaa bhavatha, yathaa "sma"saanabhavanasya bahi"scaaru, kintvabhyantara. m m. rtalokaanaa. m kiika"sai. h sarvvaprakaaramalena ca paripuur. nam;
A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! for you are like the resting-places of the dead, which are made white, and seem beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and of all unclean things.
28 tathaiva yuuyamapi lokaanaa. m samak. sa. m bahirdhaarmmikaa. h kintvanta. hkara. ne. su kevalakaapa. tyaadharmmaabhyaa. m paripuur. naa. h|
Even so you seem to men to be full of righteousness, but inside you are all false and full of wrongdoing.
29 haa haa kapa. tina upaadhyaayaa. h phiruu"sina"sca, yuuya. m bhavi. syadvaadinaa. m "sma"saanageha. m nirmmaatha, saadhuunaa. m "sma"saananiketana. m "sobhayatha
A curse is on you, scribes and Pharisees, false ones! because you put up buildings for housing the dead bodies of the prophets, and make fair the last resting-places of good men, and say,
30 vadatha ca yadi vaya. m sve. saa. m puurvvapuru. saa. naa. m kaala asthaasyaama, tarhi bhavi. syadvaadinaa. m "so. nitapaatane te. saa. m sahabhaagino naabhavi. syaama|
If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 ato yuuya. m bhavi. syadvaadighaatakaanaa. m santaanaa iti svayameva sve. saa. m saak. sya. m dattha|
So that you are witnesses against yourselves that you are the sons of those who put the prophets to death.
32 ato yuuya. m nijapuurvvapuru. saa. naa. m parimaa. napaatra. m paripuurayata|
Make full, then, the measure of your fathers.
33 re bhujagaa. h k. r.s. nabhujagava. m"saa. h, yuuya. m katha. m narakada. n.daad rak. si. syadhve| (Geenna g1067)
You snakes, offspring of snakes, how will you be kept from the punishment of hell? (Geenna g1067)
34 pa"syata, yu. smaakamantikam aha. m bhavi. syadvaadino buddhimata upaadhyaayaa. m"sca pre. sayi. syaami, kintu te. saa. m katipayaa yu. smaabhi rghaani. syante, kru"se ca ghaani. syante, kecid bhajanabhavane ka. saabhiraaghaani. syante, nagare nagare taa. di. syante ca;
For this reason, I send you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them you will put to death and put on the cross, and to some of them you will give blows in your Synagogues, driving them from town to town;
35 tena satpuru. sasya haabilo raktapaatamaarabhya berikhiya. h putra. m ya. m sikhariya. m yuuya. m mandirayaj navedyo rmadhye hatavanta. h, tadiiya"so. nitapaata. m yaavad asmin de"se yaavataa. m saadhupuru. saa. naa. m "so. nitapaato. abhavat tat sarvve. saamaagasaa. m da. n.daa yu. smaasu vartti. syante|
So that on you may come all the blood of the upright on the earth, from the blood of upright Abel to the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom you put to death between the Temple and the altar.
36 aha. m yu. smaanta tathya. m vadaami, vidyamaane. asmin puru. se sarvve vartti. syante|
Truly I say to you, All these things will come on this generation.
37 he yiruu"saalam he yiruu"saalam nagari tva. m bhavi. syadvaadino hatavatii, tava samiipa. m preritaa. m"sca paa. saa. nairaahatavatii, yathaa kukku. tii "saavakaan pak. saadha. h sa. mg. rhlaati, tathaa tava santaanaan sa. mgrahiitu. m aha. m bahuvaaram aiccha. m; kintu tva. m na samamanyathaa. h|
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, putting to death the prophets, and stoning those who are sent to her! Again and again would I have taken your children to myself as a bird takes her young ones under her wings, and you would not!
38 pa"syata ya. smaaka. m vaasasthaanam ucchinna. m tyak. syate|
See, your house is made waste.
39 aha. m yu. smaan tathya. m vadaami, ya. h parame"svarasya naamnaagacchati, sa dhanya iti vaa. nii. m yaavanna vadi. syatha, taavat maa. m puna rna drak. syatha|
For I say to you, You will not see me from this time till you say, A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord.
