1 he mama bhraatara. h, yuuyam asmaaka. m tejasvina. h prabho ryii"sukhrii. s.tasya dharmma. m mukhaapek. sayaa na dhaarayata|
My brothers, do not hold the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ in favor by appearance,
2 yato yu. smaaka. m sabhaayaa. m svar. naa"nguriiyakayukte bhraaji. s.nuparicchade puru. se pravi. s.te malinavastre kasmi. m"scid daridre. api pravi. s.te
for if there may come into your synagogue a man with gold ring, in radiant clothing, and there may also come in a poor man in vile clothing,
3 yuuya. m yadi ta. m bhraaji. s.nuparicchadavasaana. m jana. m niriik. sya vadeta bhavaan atrottamasthaana upavi"satviti ki nca ta. m daridra. m yadi vadeta tvam amusmin sthaane ti. s.tha yadvaatra mama paadapii. tha upavi"seti,
and you may look on him bearing the radiant clothing, and may say to him, “You—sit here well,” and may say to the poor man, “You—stand there,” or, “Sit here under my footstool,”
4 tarhi mana. hsu vi"se. sya yuuya. m ki. m kutarkai. h kuvicaarakaa na bhavatha?
you did not judge fully in yourselves, and became ill-reasoning judges.
5 he mama priyabhraatara. h, "s. r.nuta, sa. msaare ye daridraastaan ii"svaro vi"svaasena dhanina. h svapremakaaribhya"sca prati"srutasya raajyasyaadhikaari. na. h karttu. m ki. m na variitavaan? kintu daridro yu. smaabhiravaj naayate|
Listen, my beloved brothers, did God not choose the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those loving Him?
6 dhanavanta eva ki. m yu. smaan nopadravanti balaacca vicaaraasanaanaa. m samiipa. m na nayanti?
But you dishonored the poor one. Do the rich not oppress you and themselves draw you to judgment-seats?
7 yu. smadupari parikiirttita. m parama. m naama ki. m taireva na nindyate?
Do they not themselves speak evil of the good Name having been called on you?
8 ki nca tva. m svasamiipavaasini svaatmavat priiyasva, etacchaastriiyavacanaanusaarato yadi yuuya. m raajakiiyavyavasthaa. m paalayatha tarhi bhadra. m kurutha|
If, indeed, you fulfill royal law, according to the Writing: “You will love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;
9 yadi ca mukhaapek. saa. m kurutha tarhi paapam aacaratha vyavasthayaa caaj naala"nghina iva duu. syadhve|
but if you favor by appearance, you work sin, being convicted by the Law as transgressors;
10 yato ya. h ka"scit k. rtsnaa. m vyavasthaa. m paalayati sa yadyekasmin vidhau skhalati tarhi sarvve. saam aparaadhii bhavati|
for whoever will keep the whole Law, but will stumble in one [point], he has become guilty of all;
11 yato hetostva. m paradaaraan maa gaccheti ya. h kathitavaan sa eva narahatyaa. m maa kuryyaa ityapi kathitavaan tasmaat tva. m paradaaraan na gatvaa yadi narahatyaa. m karo. si tarhi vyavasthaala"nghii bhavasi|
for He who is saying, “You may not commit adultery,” also said, “You may not murder”; but if you will not commit adultery, but will commit murder, you have become a transgressor of law;
12 mukte rvyavasthaato ye. saa. m vicaare. na bhavitavya. m taad. r"saa lokaa iva yuuya. m kathaa. m kathayata karmma kuruta ca|
thus, speak and so act as [one] about to be judged by a law of liberty,
13 yo dayaa. m naacarati tasya vicaaro nirddayena kaari. syate, kintu dayaa vicaaram abhibhavi. syati|
for the judgment without mercy [is] to him having not done mercy, and mercy exults over judgment.
14 he mama bhraatara. h, mama pratyayo. astiiti ya. h kathayati tasya karmmaa. ni yadi na vidyanta tarhi tena ki. m phala. m? tena pratyayena ki. m tasya paritraa. na. m bhavitu. m "saknoti?
What [is] the profit, my brothers, if anyone may speak of having faith, but he may not have works? Is that faith able to save him?
15 ke. sucid bhraat. r.su bhaginii. su vaa vasanahiine. su praatyahikaahaarahiine. su ca satsu yu. smaaka. m ko. api tebhya. h "sariiraartha. m prayojaniiyaani dravyaa. ni na datvaa yadi taan vadet,
And if a brother or sister may be naked, and may be destitute of daily food,
16 yuuya. m saku"sala. m gatvo. s.nagaatraa bhavata t. rpyata ceti tarhyetena ki. m phala. m?
and anyone of you may say to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed, and be filled,” but may not give to them the things necessary for the body, what [is] the profit?
17 tadvat pratyayo yadi karmmabhi ryukto na bhavet tarhyekaakitvaat m. rta evaaste|
So also faith, if it may not have works, is dead by itself.
18 ki nca ka"scid ida. m vadi. syati tava pratyayo vidyate mama ca karmmaa. ni vidyante, tva. m karmmahiina. m svapratyaya. m maa. m dar"saya tarhyahamapi matkarmmabhya. h svapratyaya. m tvaa. m dar"sayi. syaami|
But someone may say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith out of works.
19 eka ii"svaro. astiiti tva. m pratye. si| bhadra. m karo. si| bhuutaa api tat pratiyanti kampante ca|
You believe that God is one; you do well! The demons also believe—and shudder!
20 kintu he nirbbodhamaanava, karmmahiina. h pratyayo m. rta evaastyetad avagantu. m kim icchasi?
And do you wish to know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?
21 asmaaka. m puurvvapuru. so ya ibraahiim svaputram ishaaka. m yaj navedyaam uts. r.s. tavaan sa ki. m karmmabhyo na sapu. nyiik. rta. h?
Was not our father Abraham considered righteous out of works, having brought up his son Isaac on the altar?
22 pratyaye tasya karmma. naa. m sahakaari. ni jaate karmmabhi. h pratyaya. h siddho. abhavat tat ki. m pa"syasi?
Do you see that faith was working with his works, and faith was perfected out of the works?
23 ittha nceda. m "saastriiyavacana. m saphalam abhavat, ibraahiim parame"svare vi"svasitavaan tacca tasya pu. nyaayaaga. nyata sa ce"svarasya mitra iti naama labdhavaan|
And the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness”; and, “Friend of God” he was called.
24 pa"syata maanava. h karmmabhya. h sapu. nyiikriyate na caikaakinaa pratyayena|
You see, then, that man is considered righteous out of works, and not out of faith only;
25 tadvad yaa raahabnaamikaa vaaraa"nganaa caaraan anug. rhyaapare. na maarge. na visasarja saapi ki. m karmmabhyo na sapu. nyiik. rtaa?
and in like manner also Rahab the prostitute—was she not considered righteous out of works, having received the messengers, and having sent [them] forth by another way?
26 ataevaatmahiino deho yathaa m. rto. asti tathaiva karmmahiina. h pratyayo. api m. rto. asti|
For as the body apart from [the] spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from works is dead.
