James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2 he mama bhraatara. h, yuuya. m yadaa bahuvidhapariik. saa. su nipatata tadaa tat puur. naanandasya kaara. na. m manyadhva. m|
Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into various temptations;
3 yato yu. smaaka. m vi"svaasasya pariik. sitatvena dhairyya. m sampaadyata iti jaaniitha|
knowing that the trying of your faith worketh endurance.
4 tacca dhairyya. m siddhaphala. m bhavatu tena yuuya. m siddhaa. h sampuur. naa"sca bhavi. syatha kasyaapi gu. nasyaabhaava"sca yu. smaaka. m na bhavi. syati|
But let endurance have a perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting in nothing.

But if any one of you is wanting in wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally, and upbraideth not; and it will be given him.
6 kintu sa ni. hsandeha. h san vi"svaasena yaacataa. m yata. h sandigdho maanavo vaayunaa caalitasyotplavamaanasya ca samudratara"ngasya sad. r"so bhavati|
But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting; for he that doubteth is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.
7 taad. r"so maanava. h prabho. h ki ncit praapsyatiiti na manyataa. m|
For let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord,
8 dvimanaa loka. h sarvvagati. su ca ncalo bhavati|
a double-minded man as he is, unstable in all his ways.
9 yo bhraataa namra. h sa nijonnatyaa "slaaghataa. m|
Let the brother of low degree glory in that he is exalted;
10 ya"sca dhanavaan sa nijanamratayaa "slaaghataa. myata. h sa t. r.napu. spavat k. saya. m gami. syati|
but the rich, in that he is made low; because as the flower of the grass he will pass away.

For the sun rose with its burning heat, and withered the grass, and its flower fell off, and the beauty of its appearance perished; so also will the rich man fade away in his ways.
12 yo jana. h pariik. saa. m sahate sa eva dhanya. h, yata. h pariik. sitatva. m praapya sa prabhunaa svapremakaaribhya. h pratij naata. m jiivanamuku. ta. m lapsyate|
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is approved, he will receive the crown of life, which He promised to them that love him.
13 ii"svaro maa. m pariik. sata iti pariik. saasamaye ko. api na vadatu yata. h paapaaye"svarasya pariik. saa na bhavati sa ca kamapi na pariik. sate|
Let no one when he is tempted, say, I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he tempteth no one.
14 kintu ya. h ka"scit sviiyamanovaa nchayaak. r.syate lobhyate ca tasyaiva pariik. saa bhavati|
But each one is tempted when by his own lust he is led away and enticed;
15 tasmaat saa manovaa nchaa sagarbhaa bhuutvaa du. sk. rti. m prasuute du. sk. rti"sca pari. naama. m gatvaa m. rtyu. m janayati|
then lust, having conceived, bringeth forth sin, and sin, when completed, bringeth forth death.
16 he mama priyabhraatara. h, yuuya. m na bhraamyata|
Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 yat ki ncid uttama. m daana. m puur. no vara"sca tat sarvvam uurddhvaad arthato yasmin da"saantara. m parivarttanajaatacchaayaa vaa naasti tasmaad diiptyaakaraat pituravarohati|
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the lights, with whom is no change, nor shadow from turning.
18 tasya s. r.s. tavastuunaa. m madhye vaya. m yat prathamaphalasvaruupaa bhavaamastadartha. m sa svecchaata. h satyamatasya vaakyenaasmaan janayaamaasa|
Of his own will he begot us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.
19 ataeva he mama priyabhraatara. h, yu. smaakam ekaiko jana. h "srava. ne tvarita. h kathane dhiira. h krodhe. api dhiiro bhavatu|
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
20 yato maanavasya krodha ii"svariiyadharmma. m na saadhayati|
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 ato heto ryuuya. m sarvvaam a"sucikriyaa. m du. s.tataabaahulya nca nik. sipya yu. smanmanasaa. m paritraa. ne samartha. m ropita. m vaakya. m namrabhaavena g. rhliita|
Wherefore put off all filthiness, and excess of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 apara nca yuuya. m kevalam aatmava ncayitaaro vaakyasya "srotaaro na bhavata kintu vaakyasya karmmakaari. no bhavata|
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

For if any one is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass;
24 aatmaakaare d. r.s. te sa prasthaaya kiid. r"sa aasiit tat tatk. sa. naad vismarati|
for he beholds himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was.
25 kintu ya. h ka"scit natvaa mukte. h siddhaa. m vyavasthaam aalokya ti. s.thati sa vism. rtiyukta. h "srotaa na bhuutvaa karmmakarttaiva san svakaaryye dhanyo bhavi. syati|
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty, and remains there, being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in his deed.
26 anaayattarasana. h san ya. h ka"scit svamano va ncayitvaa sva. m bhakta. m manyate tasya bhakti rmudhaa bhavati|
If any one thinks that he is religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
Pure religion and undefiled before God, the Father, is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep one's self unspotted from the world.
