1 he priyatamaa. h, yuuya. m yathaa pavitrabhavi. syadvakt. rbhi. h puurvvoktaani vaakyaani traatraa prabhunaa preritaanaam asmaakam aade"sa nca saaratha tathaa yu. smaan smaarayitvaa

This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in [both] which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind,

2 yu. smaaka. m saralabhaava. m prabodhayitum aha. m dvitiiyam ida. m patra. m likhaami|

to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles;

3 prathama. m yu. smaabhirida. m j naayataa. m yat "se. se kaale svecchaacaari. no nindakaa upasthaaya

knowing this first, that there shall come at [the] close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts,

4 vadi. syanti prabhoraagamanasya pratij naa kutra? yata. h pit. rlokaanaa. m mahaanidraagamanaat para. m sarvvaa. ni s. r.s. teraarambhakaale yathaa tathaivaavati. s.thante|

and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from [the] beginning of [the] creation.

5 puurvvam ii"svarasya vaakyenaakaa"sama. n.dala. m jalaad utpannaa jale santi. s.thamaanaa ca p. rthivyavidyataitad anicchukataataste na jaanaanti,

For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God,

6 tatastaatkaalikasa. msaaro jalenaaplaavito vinaa"sa. m gata. h|

through which [waters] the then world, deluged with water, perished.

7 kintvadhunaa varttamaane aakaa"sabhuuma. n.dale tenaiva vaakyena vahnyartha. m gupte vicaaradina. m du. s.tamaanavaanaa. m vinaa"sa nca yaavad rak. syate|

But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

8 he priyatamaa. h, yuuyam etadeka. m vaakyam anavagataa maa bhavata yat prabho. h saak. saad dinameka. m var. sasahasravad var. sasahasra nca dinaikavat|

But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with [the] Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 kecid yathaa vilamba. m manyante tathaa prabhu. h svapratij naayaa. m vilambate tannahi kintu ko. api yanna vina"syet sarvva. m eva mana. hparaavarttana. m gaccheyurityabhila. san so. asmaan prati diirghasahi. s.nutaa. m vidadhaati|

[The] Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 kintu k. sapaayaa. m caura iva prabho rdinam aagami. syati tasmin mahaa"sabdena gaganama. n.dala. m lopsyate muulavastuuni ca taapena gali. syante p. rthivii tanmadhyasthitaani karmmaa. ni ca dhak. syante|

But the day of [the] Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and [the] earth and the works in it shall be burnt up.

11 ata. h sarvvairetai rvikaare gantavye sati yasmin aakaa"sama. n.dala. m daahena vikaari. syate muulavastuuni ca taapena gali. syante

All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness,

12 tasye"svaradinasyaagamana. m pratiik. samaa. nairaakaa"nk. samaa. nai"sca yuu. smaabhi rdharmmaacaare"svarabhaktibhyaa. m kiid. r"sai rlokai rbhavitavya. m?

waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which [the] heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall melt?

13 tathaapi vaya. m tasya pratij naanusaare. na dharmmasya vaasasthaana. m nuutanam aakaa"sama. n.dala. m nuutana. m bhuuma. n.dala nca pratiik. saamahe|

But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness.

14 ataeva he priyatamaa. h, taani pratiik. samaa. naa yuuya. m ni. skala"nkaa aninditaa"sca bhuutvaa yat "saantyaa"sritaasti. s.thathaitasmin yatadhva. m|

Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless;

15 asmaaka. m prabho rdiirghasahi. s.nutaa nca paritraa. najanikaa. m manyadhva. m| asmaaka. m priyabhraatre paulaaya yat j naanam adaayi tadanusaare. na so. api patre yu. smaan prati tadevaalikhat|

and account the longsuffering of our Lord [to be] salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him,

16 svakiiyasarvvapatre. su caitaanyadhi prastutya tadeva gadati| te. su patre. su katipayaani duruuhyaa. ni vaakyaani vidyante ye ca lokaa aj naanaa"sca ncalaa"sca te nijavinaa"saartham anya"saastriiyavacanaaniiva taanyapi vikaarayanti|

as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 tasmaad he priyatamaa. h, yuuya. m puurvva. m buddhvaa saavadhaanaasti. s.thata, adhaarmmikaa. naa. m bhraantisrotasaapah. rtaa. h svakiiyasusthiratvaat maa bhra"syata|

Ye therefore, beloved, knowing [these] things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness:

18 kintvasmaaka. m prabhostraatu ryii"sukhrii. s.tasyaanugrahe j naane ca varddhadhva. m| tasya gauravam idaanii. m sadaakaala nca bhuuyaat| aamen| (aiōn g165)

but grow in grace, and in [the] knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and to [the] day of eternity. Amen. (aiōn g165)

The World is Destroyed by Water
