Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as to a father. Treat younger men as brothers,
2 v. rddhaa. h striya"sca maat. rniva yuvatii"sca puur. na"sucitvena bhaginiiriva vinayasva|
older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.
3 apara. m satyavidhavaa. h sammanyasva|
Honor the widows who are truly widows.
4 kasyaa"scid vidhavaayaa yadi putraa. h pautraa vaa vidyante tarhi te prathamata. h sviiyaparijanaan sevitu. m pitro. h pratyupakarttu nca "sik. santaa. m yatastadeve"svarasya saak. saad uttama. m graahya nca karmma|
But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show godliness to their own family and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
5 apara. m yaa naarii satyavidhavaa naathahiinaa caasti saa ii"svarasyaa"sraye ti. s.thantii divaani"sa. m nivedanapraarthanaabhyaa. m kaala. m yaapayati|
The widow who is truly in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
6 kintu yaa vidhavaa sukhabhogaasaktaa saa jiivatyapi m. rtaa bhavati|
But she who lives for pleasure is dead even while she is still alive.
7 ataeva taa yad aninditaa bhaveyuustadartham etaani tvayaa nidi"syantaa. m|
Give these instructions to the believers, so that they will be above reproach.
8 yadi ka"scit svajaatiiyaan lokaan vi"se. sata. h sviiyaparijanaan na paalayati tarhi sa vi"svaasaad bhra. s.to. apyadhama"sca bhavati|
If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 vidhavaavarge yasyaa ga. nanaa bhavati tayaa. sa. s.tivatsarebhyo nyuunavayaskayaa na bhavitavya. m; apara. m puurvvam ekasvaamikaa bhuutvaa
A widow should be enrolled if she is at least sixty years old, the wife of one man,
10 saa yat "si"supo. sa. nenaatithisevanena pavitralokaanaa. m cara. naprak. saalanena kli. s.taanaam upakaare. na sarvvavidhasatkarmmaacara. nena ca satkarmmakara. naat sukhyaatipraaptaa bhavet tadapyaava"syaka. m|
and well known for good deeds such as bringing up children, entertaining strangers, washing the feet of the saints, imparting relief to the afflicted, and devoting herself to every good work.
11 kintu yuvatii rvidhavaa na g. rhaa. na yata. h khrii. s.tasya vaipariityena taasaa. m darpe jaate taa vivaaham icchanti|
But refuse to enroll younger widows. For when their passions draw them away from Christ, they will want to marry,
12 tasmaacca puurvvadharmma. m parityajya da. n.daniiyaa bhavanti|
and thus will incur judgment because they are setting aside their first faith.
13 anantara. m taa g. rhaad g. rha. m paryya. tantya aalasya. m "sik. sante kevalamaalasya. m nahi kintvanarthakaalaapa. m paraadhikaaracarccaa ncaapi "sik. samaa. naa anucitaani vaakyaani bhaa. sante|
At the same time they will also learn to be idle, going from house to house and being not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, discussing things they should not mention.
14 ato mameccheya. m yuvatyo vidhavaa vivaaha. m kurvvataam apatyavatyo bhavantu g. rhakarmma kurvvataa ncettha. m vipak. saaya kimapi nindaadvaara. m na dadatu|
So I advise the younger widows to marry, have children, and manage their households, denying the adversary occasion for slander.
15 yata ita. h puurvvam api kaa"scit "sayataanasya pa"scaadgaaminyo jaataa. h|
For some have already turned aside to follow Satan.
16 apara. m vi"svaasinyaa vi"svaasino vaa kasyaapi parivaaraa. naa. m madhye yadi vidhavaa vidyante tarhi sa taa. h pratipaalayatu tasmaat samitau bhaare. anaaropite satyavidhavaanaa. m pratipaalana. m karttu. m tayaa "sakyate|
If any believing woman has dependent widows, she must assist them and not allow the church to be burdened, so that it can help the widows who are truly in need.
17 ye praa nca. h samiti. m samyag adhiti. s.thanti vi"se. sata ii"svaravaakyenopade"sena ca ye yatna. m vidadhate te dvigu. nasyaadarasya yogyaa maanyantaa. m|
Elders who lead effectively are worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.
18 yasmaat "saastre likhitamidamaaste, tva. m "sasyamarddakav. r.sasyaasya. m maa badhaaneti, aparamapi kaaryyak. rd vetanasya yogyo bhavatiiti|
For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.”
19 dvau triin vaa saak. si. no vinaa kasyaacit praaciinasya viruddham abhiyogastvayaa na g. rhyataa. m|
Do not entertain an accusation against an elder, except on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
20 apara. m ye paapamaacaranti taan sarvve. saa. m samak. sa. m bhartsayasva tenaapare. saamapi bhiiti rjani. syate|
But those who persist in sin should be rebuked in front of everyone, so that the others will stand in fear of sin.
21 aham ii"svarasya prabho ryii"sukhrii. s.tasya manoniitadivyaduutaanaa nca gocare tvaam idam aaj naapayaami tva. m kasyaapyanurodhena kimapi na kurvvana vinaapak. sapaatam etaana vidhiin paalaya|
I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to maintain these principles without bias, and to do nothing out of partiality.
22 kasyaapi muurddhi hastaapar. na. m tvarayaa maakaar. sii. h| parapaapaanaa ncaa. m"sii maa bhava| sva. m "suci. m rak. sa|
Do not be too quick in the laying on of hands and thereby share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
23 apara. m tavodarapii. daayaa. h puna. h puna durbbalataayaa"sca nimitta. m kevala. m toya. m na pivan ki ncin madya. m piva|
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24 ke. saa ncit maanavaanaa. m paapaani vicaaraat puurvva. m ke. saa ncit pa"scaat prakaa"sante|
The sins of some men are obvious, going ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others do not surface until later.
25 tathaiva satkarmmaa. nyapi prakaa"sante tadanyathaa sati pracchannaani sthaatu. m na "saknuvanti|
In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even the ones that are inconspicuous cannot remain hidden.
