Now that you have done with all malice, all deceitfulness, insincerity, jealous feelings, and all backbiting,
2 yu. smaabhi. h paritraa. naaya v. rddhipraaptyartha. m navajaata"si"subhiriva prak. rta. m vaagdugdha. m pipaasyataa. m|
like newly born infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that you may be enabled by it to grow until you attain salvation –
3 yata. h prabhu rmadhura etasyaasvaada. m yuuya. m praaptavanta. h|
since ‘you have found by experience that the Lord is kind.’
4 apara. m maanu. sairavaj naatasya kintvii"svare. naabhirucitasya bahumuulyasya jiivatprastarasyeva tasya prabho. h sannidhim aagataa
Come to him, then, as to a living stone, rejected, indeed, by men, but in God’s eyes choice and precious;
5 yuuyamapi jiivatprastaraa iva niciiyamaanaa aatmikamandira. m khrii. s.tena yii"sunaa ce"svarato. sakaa. naam aatmikabaliinaa. m daanaartha. m pavitro yaajakavargo bhavatha|
and, as living stones, form yourselves into a spiritual house, to be a consecrated priesthood, for the offering of spiritual sacrifices that will be acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 yata. h "saastre likhitamaaste, yathaa, pa"sya paa. saa. na eko. asti siiyoni sthaapito mayaa| mukhyako. nasya yogya. h sa v. rta"scaatiiva muulyavaan| yo jano vi"svaset tasmin sa lajjaa. m na gami. syati|
For there is a passage of scripture that runs – ‘See, I am placing in Zion a choice and precious cornerstone; and those who believe in him will have no cause for shame.’
7 vi"svaasinaa. m yu. smaakameva samiipe sa muulyavaan bhavati kintvavi"svaasinaa. m k. rte nicet. rbhiravaj naata. h sa paa. saa. na. h ko. nasya bhittimuula. m bhuutvaa baadhaajanaka. h paa. saa. na. h skhalanakaaraka"sca "sailo jaata. h|
It is to you, then, who believe in him that he is precious, but to those who do not believe he is ‘a stone which, though rejected by the builders, has now itself become the corner-stone,’
8 te caavi"svaasaad vaakyena skhalanti skhalane ca niyuktaa. h santi|
and ‘a stumbling-block, and a rock which will prove a hindrance.’ They stumble because they do not accept the message. This was the fate destined for them.
9 kintu yuuya. m yenaandhakaaramadhyaat svakiiyaa"scaryyadiiptimadhyam aahuutaastasya gu. naan prakaa"sayitum abhirucito va. m"so raajakiiyo yaajakavarga. h pavitraa jaatiradhikarttavyaa. h prajaa"sca jaataa. h|
But you are ‘a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, God’s own people,’ entrusted with the proclamation of the goodness of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
10 puurvva. m yuuya. m tasya prajaa naabhavata kintvidaaniim ii"svarasya prajaa aadhve| puurvvam ananukampitaa abhavata kintvidaaniim anukampitaa aadhve|
Once you were ‘not a people,’ but now you are ‘God’s people’; once you ‘had not found mercy,’ but now you ‘have found mercy.’
11 he priyatamaa. h, yuuya. m pravaasino vide"sina"sca lokaa iva manasa. h praatikuulyena yodhibhya. h "saariirikasukhaabhilaa. sebhyo nivarttadhvam ityaha. m vinaye|
Dear friends, I beg you, as pilgrims and strangers on earth, to refrain from indulging the cravings of your earthly nature, for they make war on the soul.
12 devapuujakaanaa. m madhye yu. smaakam aacaara evam uttamo bhavatu yathaa te yu. smaan du. skarmmakaarilokaaniva puna rna nindanta. h k. rpaad. r.s. tidine svacak. surgocariiyasatkriyaabhya ii"svarasya pra"sa. msaa. m kuryyu. h|
Let your daily life among the Gentiles be so upright, that, whenever they malign you as evildoers, they may learn, as they watch, from the uprightness of your conduct, to praise God ‘at the time when he will visit them.’
13 tato heto ryuuya. m prabhoranurodhaat maanavas. r.s. taanaa. m kart. rtvapadaanaa. m va"siibhavata vi"se. sato bhuupaalasya yata. h sa "sre. s.tha. h,
Submit to all human institutions for the Lord’s sake, alike to the emperor as the supreme authority,
14 de"saadhyak. saa. naa nca yataste du. skarmmakaari. naa. m da. n.dadaanaartha. m satkarmmakaari. naa. m pra"sa. msaartha nca tena preritaa. h|
and to governors as sent by him to punish evildoers and to commend those who do right.
15 ittha. m nirbbodhamaanu. saa. naam aj naanatva. m yat sadaacaaribhi ryu. smaabhi rniruttariikriyate tad ii"svarasyaabhimata. m|
For God’s will is this – that you should silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing what is right.
16 yuuya. m svaadhiinaa ivaacarata tathaapi du. s.tataayaa ve. sasvaruupaa. m svaadhiinataa. m dhaarayanta iva nahi kintvii"svarasya daasaa iva|
Act as free people, yet not using your freedom as those do who make it a cloak for wickedness, but as Servants of God.
17 sarvvaan samaadriyadhva. m bhraat. rvarge priiyadhvam ii"svaraad bibhiita bhuupaala. m sammanyadhva. m|
Show honor to everyone, love the Lord’s followers, ‘revere God, honor the emperor.’
18 he daasaa. h yuuya. m sampuur. naadare. na prabhuunaa. m va"syaa bhavata kevala. m bhadraa. naa. m dayaaluunaa nca nahi kintvan. rjuunaamapi|
Those of you who are domestic servants should always be submissive and respectful to their masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are arbitrary.
19 yato. anyaayena du. hkhabhogakaala ii"svaracintayaa yat kle"sasahana. m tadeva priya. m|
For this wins God’s approval when, because conscious of God’s presence, a person who is suffering unjustly bears their troubles patiently.
20 paapa. m k. rtvaa yu. smaaka. m cape. taaghaatasahanena kaa pra"sa. msaa? kintu sadaacaara. m k. rtvaa yu. smaaka. m yad du. hkhasahana. m tadeve"svarasya priya. m|
What credit can you claim when, after doing wrong, you take your punishment for it patiently? But, on the other hand, if, after doing right, you take your sufferings patiently, that does win the approval of God.
21 tadarthameva yuuyam aahuutaa yata. h khrii. s.to. api yu. smannimitta. m du. hkha. m bhuktvaa yuuya. m yat tasya padacihnai rvrajeta tadartha. m d. r.s. taantameka. m dar"sitavaan|
For it was to this that you were called! For Christ, too, suffered – on your behalf – and left you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
22 sa kimapi paapa. m na k. rtavaan tasya vadane kaapi chalasya kathaa naasiit|
He ‘never sinned, nor was anything deceitful ever heard from his lips.’
23 nindito. api san sa pratinindaa. m na k. rtavaan du. hkha. m sahamaano. api na bhartsitavaan kintu yathaarthavicaarayitu. h samiipe sva. m samarpitavaan|
He was abused, but he did not answer with abuse; he suffered, but he did not threaten; he entrusted himself to him whose judgments are just.
24 vaya. m yat paapebhyo niv. rtya dharmmaartha. m jiivaamastadartha. m sa sva"sariire. naasmaaka. m paapaani kru"sa uu. dhavaan tasya prahaarai ryuuya. m svasthaa abhavata|
And he ‘himself carried our sins’ in his own body to the cross, so that we might die to our sins, and live for righteousness. ‘His bruising was your healing.’
25 yata. h puurvva. m yuuya. m bhrama. nakaarime. saa ivaadhva. m kintvadhunaa yu. smaakam aatmanaa. m paalakasyaadhyak. sasya ca samiipa. m pratyaavarttitaa. h|
Once you were straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
