1 he bhraatara. h, asmatpit. rpuru. saanadhi yuuya. m yadaj naataa na ti. s.thateti mama vaa nchaa, te sarvve meghaadha. hsthitaa babhuuvu. h sarvve samudramadhyena vavraju. h,
And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
2 sarvve muusaamuddi"sya meghasamudrayo rmajjitaa babhuuvu. h
and all were immersed into Moses in the cloud, and in the sea;
3 sarvva ekam aatmika. m bhak. sya. m bubhujira ekam aatmika. m peya. m papu"sca
and all ate the same spiritual food,
4 yataste. anucarata aatmikaad acalaat labdha. m toya. m papu. h so. acala. h khrii. s.taeva|
and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;
5 tathaa satyapi te. saa. m madhye. adhike. su loke. svii"svaro na santuto. seti hetoste prantare nipaatitaa. h|
but in the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were strewn in the wilderness,
6 etasmin te. asmaaka. m nidar"sanasvaruupaa babhuuvu. h; ataste yathaa kutsitaabhilaa. si. no babhuuvurasmaabhistathaa kutsitaabhilaa. sibhi rna bhavitavya. m|
and those things became types of us, for our not passionately desiring evil things, as also these desired.
7 likhitamaaste, lokaa bhoktu. m paatu ncopavivi"sustata. h krii. ditumutthitaa itayanena prakaare. na te. saa. m kai"scid yadvad devapuujaa k. rtaa yu. smaabhistadvat na kriyataa. m|
Neither become idolaters, as certain of them, as it has been written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood up to play”;
8 apara. m te. saa. m kai"scid yadvad vyabhicaara. h k. rtastena caikasmin dine trayovi. m"satisahasraa. ni lokaa nipaatitaastadvad asmaabhi rvyabhicaaro na karttavya. h|
neither may we commit whoredom, as certain of them committed whoredom, and there fell in one day twenty-three thousand;
9 te. saa. m kecid yadvat khrii. s.ta. m pariik. sitavantastasmaad bhuja"ngai rna. s.taa"sca tadvad asmaabhi. h khrii. s.to na pariik. sitavya. h|
neither may we tempt the Christ, as also certain of them tempted, and perished by the serpents;
10 te. saa. m kecid yathaa vaakkalaha. m k. rtavantastatkaara. naat hantraa vinaa"sitaa"sca yu. smaabhistadvad vaakkalaho na kriyataa. m|
neither murmur, as also some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.
11 taan prati yaanyetaani jagha. tire taanyasmaaka. m nidar"sanaani jagata. h "se. sayuge varttamaanaanaam asmaaka. m "sik. saartha. m likhitaani ca babhuuvu. h| (aiōn g165)
And all these things happened to those persons as types, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages came, (aiōn g165)
12 ataeva ya. h ka"scid susthira. mmanya. h sa yanna patet tatra saavadhaano bhavatu|
so that he who is thinking to stand—let him observe, lest he fall.
13 maanu. sikapariik. saatiriktaa kaapi pariik. saa yu. smaan naakraamat, ii"svara"sca vi"svaasya. h so. ati"saktyaa. m pariik. saayaa. m patanaat yu. smaan rak. si. syati, pariik. saa ca yad yu. smaabhi. h so. dhu. m "sakyate tadartha. m tayaa saha nistaarasya panthaana. m niruupayi. syati|
No temptation has taken you—except that of man; and God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted above what you are able, but He will make, with the temptation, also the outlet, for your being able to bear [it].
14 he priyabhraatara. h, devapuujaato duuram apasarata|
For this reason, my beloved, flee from the idolatry;
15 aha. m yu. smaan vij naan matvaa prabhaa. se mayaa yat kathyate tad yu. smaabhi rvivicyataa. m|
as to wise men I speak—judge what I say.
16 yad dhanyavaadapaatram asmaabhi rdhanya. m gadyate tat ki. m khrii. s.tasya "so. nitasya sahabhaagitva. m nahi? ya"sca puupo. asmaabhi rbhajyate sa ki. m khrii. s.tasya vapu. sa. h sahabhaagitva. m nahi?
The cup of the blessing that we bless—is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? The bread that we break—is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?
17 vaya. m bahava. h santo. apyekapuupasvaruupaa ekavapu. hsvaruupaa"sca bhavaama. h, yato vaya. m sarvva ekapuupasya sahabhaagina. h|
Because one bread, one body, are we the many—for we all partake of the one bread.
18 yuuya. m "saariirikam israayeliiyava. m"sa. m niriik. sadhva. m| ye baliinaa. m maa. msaani bhu njate te ki. m yaj navedyaa. h sahabhaagino na bhavanti?
See Israel according to the flesh! Are those not eating the sacrifices in the fellowship of the altar?
19 ityanena mayaa ki. m kathyate? devataa vaastavikii devataayai balidaana. m vaa vaastavika. m ki. m bhavet?
What do I say then? That an idol is anything? Or that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything?
20 tannahi kintu bhinnajaatibhi rye balayo diiyante ta ii"svaraaya tannahi bhuutebhyaeva diiyante tasmaad yuuya. m yad bhuutaanaa. m sahabhaagino bhavathetyaha. m naabhila. saami|
[No, ] but that the things that the nations sacrifice—they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to come into the fellowship of the demons.
21 prabho. h ka. msena bhuutaanaamapi ka. msena paana. m yu. smaabhirasaadhya. m; yuuya. m prabho rbhojyasya bhuutaanaamapi bhojyasya sahabhaagino bhavitu. m na "saknutha|
You are not able to drink the cup of the LORD and the cup of demons; you are not able to partake of the table of the LORD and of the table of demons;
22 vaya. m ki. m prabhu. m sparddhi. syaamahe? vaya. m ki. m tasmaad balavanta. h?
do we arouse the LORD to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
23 maa. m prati sarvva. m karmmaaprati. siddha. m kintu na sarvva. m hitajanaka. m sarvvam aprati. siddha. m kintu na sarvva. m ni. s.thaajanaka. m|
All things are lawful to me, but not all things are profitable; all things are lawful to me, but not all things build up;
24 aatmahita. h kenaapi na ce. s.titavya. h kintu sarvvai. h parahita"sce. s.titavya. h|
let no one seek his own—but each another’s.
25 aapa. ne yat krayya. m tad yu. smaabhi. h sa. mvedasyaartha. m kimapi na p. r.s. tvaa bhujyataa. m
Eat whatever is sold in the meat-market, not inquiring, because of the conscience,
26 yata. h p. rthivii tanmadhyastha nca sarvva. m parame"svarasya|
for the earth and its fullness [are] the LORD’s;
27 aparam avi"svaasilokaanaa. m kenacit nimantritaa yuuya. m yadi tatra jigami. satha tarhi tena yad yad upasthaapyate tad yu. smaabhi. h sa. mvedasyaartha. m kimapi na p. r.s. tvaa bhujyataa. m|
and if anyone of the unbelieving calls you, and you wish to go, eat all that is set before you, inquiring nothing, because of the conscience;
28 kintu tatra yadi ka"scid yu. smaan vadet bhak. syametad devataayaa. h prasaada iti tarhi tasya j naapayituranurodhaat sa. mvedasyaartha nca tad yu. smaabhi rna bhoktavya. m| p. rthivii tanmadhyastha nca sarvva. m parame"svarasya,
and if anyone may say to you, “This is a thing sacrificed to an idol,” do not eat, because of that one who showed [it], and of the conscience, for the LORD’s [is] the earth and its fullness:
29 satyametat, kintu mayaa ya. h sa. mvedo nirddi"syate sa tava nahi parasyaiva|
and conscience, I say, not of yourself, but of the other, for why [is it] that my liberty is judged by another’s conscience?
30 anugrahapaatre. na mayaa dhanyavaada. m k. rtvaa yad bhujyate tatkaara. naad aha. m kuto nindi. sye?
And if I partake thankfully, why am I spoken of [as] evil, for that for which I give thanks?
31 tasmaad bhojana. m paanam anyadvaa karmma kurvvadbhi ryu. smaabhi. h sarvvameve"svarasya mahimna. h prakaa"saartha. m kriyataa. m|
Whether, then, you eat, or drink, or do anything, do all to the glory of God;
32 yihuudiiyaanaa. m bhinnajaatiiyaanaam ii"svarasya samaajasya vaa vighnajanakai ryu. smaabhi rna bhavitavya. m|
become offenseless, both to Jews and Greeks, and to the Assembly of God;
33 ahamapyaatmahitam ace. s.tamaano bahuunaa. m paritraa. naartha. m te. saa. m hita. m ce. s.tamaana. h sarvvavi. saye sarvve. saa. m tu. s.tikaro bhavaamiityanenaaha. m yadvat khrii. s.tasyaanugaamii tadvad yuuya. m mamaanugaamino bhavata|
as I also please all in all things, not seeking my own profit, but that of many—that they may be saved.
