1 ตต: ปรํ ยิหูทียานามฺ อุตฺสว อุปสฺถิเต ยีศุ รฺยิรูศาลมํ คตวานฺฯ
After this there was a Festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 ตสฺมินฺนคเร เมษนามฺโน ทฺวารสฺย สมีเป อิพฺรียภาษยา ไพเถสฺทา นามฺนา ปิษฺกริณี ปญฺจฆฏฺฏยุกฺตาสีตฺฯ
Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, called in Hebrew 'Bethesda.' It has five arcades.
3 ตสฺยาเสฺตษุ ฆฏฺเฏษุ กิลาลกมฺปนมฺ อเปกฺษฺย อนฺธขญฺจศุษฺกางฺคาทโย พหโว โรคิณ: ปตนฺตสฺติษฺฐนฺติ สฺมฯ
In these there used to lie a great number of sick persons, and of people who were blind or lame or paralyzed.
4 ยโต วิเศษกาเล ตสฺย สรโส วาริ สฺวรฺคียทูต เอตฺยากมฺปยตฺ ตตฺกีลาลกมฺปนาตฺ ปรํ ย: กศฺจิทฺ โรคี ปฺรถมํ ปานียมวาโรหตฺ ส เอว ตตฺกฺษณาทฺ โรคมุกฺโต'ภวตฺฯ
5 ตทาษฺฏาตฺรึศทฺวรฺษาณิ ยาวทฺ โรคคฺรสฺต เอกชนสฺตสฺมินฺ สฺถาเน สฺถิตวานฺฯ
And there was one man there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6 ยีศุสฺตํ ศยิตํ ทฺฤษฺฏฺวา พหุกาลิกโรคีติ ชฺญาตฺวา วฺยาหฺฤตวานฺ ตฺวํ กึ สฺวโสฺถ พุภูษสิ?
Jesus saw him lying there, and knowing that he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him, "Do you wish to have health and strength?"
7 ตโต โรคี กถิตวานฺ เห มเหจฺฉ ยทา กีลาลํ กมฺปเต ตทา มำ ปุษฺกริณีมฺ อวโรหยิตุํ มม โกปิ นาสฺติ, ตสฺมานฺ มม คมนกาเล กศฺจิทโนฺย'โคฺร คตฺวา อวโรหติฯ
"Sir," replied the sufferer, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is moved; but while I am coming some one else steps down before me."
8 ตทา ยีศุรกถยทฺ อุตฺติษฺฐ, ตว ศยฺยามุตฺโตลฺย คฺฤหีตฺวา ยาหิฯ
"Rise," said Jesus, "take up your mat and walk."
9 ส ตตฺกฺษณาตฺ สฺวโสฺถ ภูตฺวา ศยฺยามุตฺโตลฺยาทาย คตวานฺ กินฺตุ ตทฺทินํ วิศฺรามวาร: ฯ
Instantly the man was restored to perfect health, and he took up his mat and began to walk.
10 ตสฺมาทฺ ยิหูทียา: สฺวสฺถํ นรํ วฺยาหรนฺ อทฺย วิศฺรามวาเร ศยนียมาทาย น ยาตวฺยมฺฯ
That day was a Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, "It is the Sabbath: you must not carry your mat."
11 ตต: ส ปฺรตฺยโวจทฺ โย มำ สฺวสฺถมฺ อการฺษีตฺ ศยนียมฺ อุตฺโตลฺยาทาย ยาตุํ มำ ส เอวาทิศตฺฯ
"He who cured me," he replied, "said to me, 'Take up your mat and walk.'"
12 ตทา เต'ปฺฤจฺฉนฺ ศยนียมฺ อุตฺโตลฺยาทาย ยาตุํ ย อาชฺญาปยตฺ ส ก: ?
"Who is it," they asked, "that said to you, 'Take up your mat and walk'?"
13 กินฺตุ ส ก อิติ สฺวสฺถีภูโต นาชานาทฺ ยตสฺตสฺมินฺ สฺถาเน ชนตาสตฺตฺวาทฺ ยีศุ: สฺถานานฺตรมฺ อาคมตฺฯ
But the man who had been cured did not know who it was; for Jesus had passed out unnoticed, there being a crowd in the place.
14 ตต: ปรํ เยศุ รฺมนฺทิเร ตํ นรํ สากฺษาตฺปฺราปฺยากถยตฺ ปเศฺยทานีมฺ อนามโย ชาโตสิ ยถาธิกา ทุรฺทศา น ฆฏเต ตทฺเธโต: ปาปํ กรฺมฺม ปุนรฺมาการฺษี: ฯ
Afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him, "You are now restored to health. Do not sin any more, or a worse thing may befall you."
15 ตต: ส คตฺวา ยิหูทียานฺ อวททฺ ยีศุ รฺมามฺ อโรคิณมฺ อการฺษีตฺฯ
The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had restored him to health;
16 ตโต ยีศุ รฺวิศฺรามวาเร กรฺมฺเมทฺฤศํ กฺฤตวานฺ อิติ เหโต รฺยิหูทียาสฺตํ ตาฑยิตฺวา หนฺตุมฺ อเจษฺฏนฺตฯ
and on this account the Jews began to persecute Jesus--because He did these things on the Sabbath.
17 ยีศุสฺตานาขฺยตฺ มม ปิตา ยตฺ การฺยฺยํ กโรติ ตทนุรูปมฺ อหมปิ กโรติฯ
His reply to their accusation was, "My Father works unceasingly, and so do I."
18 ตโต ยิหูทียาสฺตํ หนฺตุํ ปุนรยตนฺต ยโต วิศฺรามวารํ นามนฺยต ตเทว เกวลํ น อธิกนฺตุ อีศฺวรํ สฺวปิตรํ โปฺรจฺย สฺวมปีศฺวรตุลฺยํ กฺฤตวานฺฯ
On this account then the Jews were all the more eager to put Him to death--because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also spoke of God as being in a special sense His Father, thus putting Himself on a level with God.
19 ปศฺจาทฺ ยีศุรวททฺ ยุษฺมานหํ ยถารฺถตรํ วทามิ ปุตฺร: ปิตรํ ยทฺยตฺ กรฺมฺม กุรฺวฺวนฺตํ ปศฺยติ ตทติริกฺตํ เสฺวจฺฉาต: กิมปิ กรฺมฺม กรฺตฺตุํ น ศกฺโนติฯ ปิตา ยตฺ กโรติ ปุโตฺรปิ ตเทว กโรติฯ
"In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that the Son can do nothing of Himself--He can only do what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, that the Son does in like manner.
20 ปิตา ปุเตฺร เสฺนหํ กโรติ ตสฺมาตฺ สฺวยํ ยทฺยตฺ กรฺมฺม กโรติ ตตฺสรฺวฺวํ ปุตฺรํ ทรฺศยติ; ยถา จ ยุษฺมากํ อาศฺจรฺยฺยชฺญานํ ชนิษฺยเต ตทรฺถมฺ อิโตปิ มหากรฺมฺม ตํ ทรฺศยิษฺยติฯ
For the Father loves the Son and reveals to Him all that He Himself is doing. And greater deeds than these will He reveal to Him, in order that you may wonder.
21 วสฺตุตสฺตุ ปิตา ยถา ปฺรมิตานฺ อุตฺถาปฺย สชิวานฺ กโรติ ตทฺวตฺ ปุโตฺรปิ ยํ ยํ อิจฺฉติ ตํ ตํ สชีวํ กโรติฯ
For just as the Father awakens the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wills.
22 สรฺเวฺว ปิตรํ ยถา สตฺกุรฺวฺวนฺติ ตถา ปุตฺรมปิ สตฺการยิตุํ ปิตา สฺวยํ กสฺยาปิ วิจารมกฺฤตฺวา สรฺวฺววิจาราณำ ภารํ ปุเตฺร สมรฺปิตวานฺฯ
The Father indeed does not judge any one, but He has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
23 ย: ปุตฺรํ สตฺ กโรติ ส ตสฺย เปฺรรกมปิ สตฺ กโรติฯ
that all may honour the Son even as they honour the Father. The man who withholds honour from the Son withholds honour from the Father who sent Him.
24 ยุษฺมานาหํ ยถารฺถตรํ วทามิ โย ชโน มม วากฺยํ ศฺรุตฺวา มตฺเปฺรรเก วิศฺวสิติ โสนนฺตายุ: ปฺราปฺโนติ กทาปิ ทณฺฑพาชนํ น ภวติ นิธนาทุตฺถาย ปรมายุ: ปฺราปฺโนติฯ (aiōnios g166)
"In most solemn truth I tell you that he who listens to my teaching and believes Him who sent me, has the Life of the Ages, and does not come under judgement, but has passed over out of death into Life. (aiōnios g166)
25 อหํ ยุษฺมานติยถารฺถํ วทามิ ยทา มฺฤตา อีศฺวรปุตฺรสฺย นินาทํ โศฺรษฺยนฺติ เย จ โศฺรษฺยนฺติ เต สชีวา ภวิษฺยนฺติ สมย เอตาทฺฤศ อายาติ วรมฺ อิทานีมปฺยุปติษฺฐติฯ
"In most solemn truth I tell you that a time is coming--nay, has already come--when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.
26 ปิตา ยถา สฺวยญฺชีวี ตถา ปุตฺราย สฺวยญฺชีวิตฺวาธิการํ ทตฺตวานฺฯ
For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in Himself.
27 ส มนุษฺยปุตฺร: เอตสฺมาตฺ การณาตฺ ปิตา ทณฺฑกรณาธิการมปิ ตสฺมินฺ สมรฺปิตวานฺฯ
And He has conferred on Him authority to act as Judge, because He is the Son of Man.
28 เอตทรฺเถ ยูยมฺ อาศฺจรฺยฺยํ น มนฺยธฺวํ ยโต ยสฺมินฺ สมเย ตสฺย นินาทํ ศฺรุตฺวา ศฺมศานสฺถา: สรฺเวฺว พหิราคมิษฺยนฺติ สมย เอตาทฺฤศ อุปสฺถาสฺยติฯ
Wonder not at this. For a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and will come forth--
29 ตสฺมาทฺ เย สตฺกรฺมฺมาณิ กฺฤตวนฺตสฺต อุตฺถาย อายุ: ปฺราปฺสฺยนฺติ เย จ กุกรฺมาณิ กฺฤตวนฺตสฺต อุตฺถาย ทณฺฑํ ปฺราปฺสฺยนฺติฯ
they who have done what is right to the resurrection of Life, and they whose actions have been evil to the resurrection of judgement.
30 อหํ สฺวยํ กิมปิ กรฺตฺตุํ น ศกฺโนมิ ยถา ศุโณมิ ตถา วิจารยามิ มม วิจารญฺจ นฺยายฺย: ยโตหํ สฺวียาภีษฺฏํ เนหิตฺวา มตฺเปฺรรยิตุ: ปิตุริษฺฏมฺ อีเหฯ
"I can of my own self do nothing. As I am bidden, so I judge; and mine is a just judgement, because it is not my own will that guides me, but the will of Him who sent me.
31 ยทิ สฺวสฺมินฺ สฺวยํ สากฺษฺยํ ททามิ ตรฺหิ ตตฺสากฺษฺยมฺ อาคฺราหฺยํ ภวติ;
"If I give testimony concerning myself, my testimony cannot be accepted.
32 กินฺตุ มทรฺเถ'ปโร ชน: สากฺษฺยํ ททาติ มทรฺเถ ตสฺย ยตฺ สากฺษฺยํ ตตฺ สตฺยมฺ เอตทปฺยหํ ชานามิฯ
There is Another who gives testimony concerning me, and I know that the testimony is true which He offers concerning me.
33 ยุษฺมาภิ โรฺยหนํ ปฺรติ โลเกษุ เปฺรริเตษุ ส สตฺยกถายำ สากฺษฺยมททาตฺฯ
"You sent to John, and he both was and still is a witness to the truth.
34 มานุษาทหํ สากฺษฺยํ โนเปกฺเษ ตถาปิ ยูยํ ยถา ปริตฺรยเธฺว ตทรฺถมฺ อิทํ วากฺยํ วทามิฯ
But the testimony on my behalf which I accept is not from man; though I say all this in order that you may be saved.
35 โยหนฺ เททีปฺยมาโน ทีป อิว เตชสฺวี สฺถิตวานฺ ยูยมฺ อลฺปกาลํ ตสฺย ทีปฺตฺยานนฺทิตุํ สมมนฺยธฺวํฯ
He was the lamp that burned and shone, and for a time you were willing to be gladdened by his light.
36 กินฺตุ ตตฺปฺรมาณาทปิ มม คุรุตรํ ปฺรมาณํ วิทฺยเต ปิตา มำ เปฺรษฺย ยทฺยตฺ กรฺมฺม สมาปยิตุํ ศกฺตฺติมททาตฺ มยา กฺฤตํ ตตฺตตฺ กรฺมฺม มทรฺเถ ปฺรมาณํ ททาติฯ
"But the testimony which I have is weightier than that of John; for the work the Father has assigned to me for me to bring it to completion--the very work which I am doing--affords testimony concerning me that the Father has sent me.
37 ย: ปิตา มำ เปฺรริตวานฺ โมปิ มทรฺเถ ปฺรมาณํ ททาติฯ ตสฺย วากฺยํ ยุษฺมาภิ: กทาปิ น ศฺรุตํ ตสฺย รูปญฺจ น ทฺฤษฺฏํ
And the Father who sent me, He has given testimony concerning me. None of you have ever either heard His voice or seen what He is like.
38 ตสฺย วากฺยญฺจ ยุษฺมากมฺ อนฺต: กทาปิ สฺถานํ นาปฺโนติ ยต: ส ยํ เปฺรษิตวานฺ ยูยํ ตสฺมินฺ น วิศฺวสิถฯ
Nor have you His word dwelling within you, for you refuse to believe Him whom He has sent.
39 ธรฺมฺมปุสฺตกานิ ยูยมฺ อาโลจยธฺวํ ไต รฺวาไกฺยรนนฺตายุ: ปฺราปฺสฺยาม อิติ ยูยํ พุธฺยเธฺว ตทฺธรฺมฺมปุสฺตกานิ มทรฺเถ ปฺรมาณํ ททติฯ (aiōnios g166)
"You search the Scriptures, because you suppose that in them you will find the Life of the Ages; and it is those Scriptures that yield testimony concerning me; (aiōnios g166)
40 ตถาปิ ยูยํ ปรมายุ: ปฺราปฺตเย มม สํนิธิมฺ น ชิคมิษถฯ
and yet you are unwilling to come to me that you may have Life.
41 อหํ มานุเษภฺย: สตฺการํ น คฺฤหฺลามิฯ
"I do not accept glory from man,
42 อหํ ยุษฺมานฺ ชานามิ; ยุษฺมากมนฺตร อีศฺวรเปฺรม นาสฺติฯ
but I know you well, and I know that in your hearts you do not really love God.
43 อหํ นิชปิตุ รฺนามฺนาคโตสฺมิ ตถาปิ มำ น คฺฤหฺลีถ กินฺตุ กศฺจิทฺ ยทิ สฺวนามฺนา สมาคมิษฺยติ ตรฺหิ ตํ คฺรหีษฺยถฯ
I have come as my Father's representative, and you do not receive me. If some one else comes representing only himself, him you will receive.
44 ยูยมฺ อีศฺวราตฺ สตฺการํ น จิษฺฏตฺวา เกวลํ ปรสฺปรํ สตฺการมฺ เจทฺ อาทธฺเวฺว ตรฺหิ กถํ วิศฺวสิตุํ ศกฺนุถ?
How is it possible for you to believe, while you receive glory from one another and have no desire for the glory that comes from the only God?
45 ปุตุ: สมีเป'หํ ยุษฺมานฺ อปวทิษฺยามีติ มา จินฺตยต ยสฺมินฺ, ยสฺมินฺ ยุษฺมากํ วิศฺวส: เสอว มูสา ยุษฺมานฺ อปวทติฯ
"Do not suppose that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, namely Moses, on whom your hope rests.
46 ยทิ ยูยํ ตสฺมินฺ วฺยศฺวสิษฺยต ตรฺหิ มยฺยปิ วฺยศฺวสิษฺยต, ยตฺ ส มยิ ลิขิตวานฺฯ
For if you believe Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.
47 ตโต ยทิ เตน ลิขิตวานิ น ปฺรติถ ตรฺหิ มม วากฺยานิ กถํ ปฺรเตฺยษฺยถ?
But if you disbelieve his writings, how are you to believe my words?"
