1 anantaraM sa tatsthAnAt prasthAya svapradeshamAgataH shiShyAshcha tatpashchAd gatAH|
He went out from there. He came into his own country, and his disciples followed him.
2 atha vishrAmavAre sati sa bhajanagR^ihe upadeShTumArabdhavAn tato. aneke lokAstatkathAM shrutvA vismitya jagaduH, asya manujasya IdR^ishI AshcharyyakriyA kasmAj jAtA? tathA svakarAbhyAm itthamadbhutaM karmma karttAm etasmai kathaM j nAnaM dattam?
When the Sabbath ·To cease· had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and, “What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands?
3 kimayaM mariyamaH putrastaj nA no? kimayaM yAkUb-yosi-yihudA-shimonAM bhrAtA no? asya bhaginyaH kimihAsmAbhiH saha no? itthaM te tadarthe pratyUhaM gatAH|
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary [Rebellion], and brother of James [Surplanter], Joses, Judah [Praised], and Simeon [Hearing]? Are not his sisters here with us?” They were scandalized ·to entrap, to cause weak knees that waiver, stumbling block that causes falling, distrusting one that should be trusted and obeyed, disapproving of authority, to judge unfavorably causing displeasure, indignant· at him.
4 tadA yIshustebhyo. akathayat svadeshaM svakuTumbAn svaparijanAMshcha vinA kutrApi bhaviShyadvAdI asatkR^ito na bhavati|
Yeshua [Salvation] said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.”
5 apara ncha teShAmapratyayAt sa vismitaH kiyatAM rogiNAM vapuHShu hastam arpayitvA kevalaM teShAmArogyakaraNAd anyat kimapi chitrakAryyaM karttAM na shaktaH|
He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people, and healed them.
6 atha sa chaturdikstha grAmAn bhramitvA upadiShTavAn
He marveled because of their unbelief. He went around the villages teaching.
7 dvAdashashiShyAn AhUya amedhyabhUtAn vashIkarttAM shaktiM dattvA teShAM dvau dvau jano preShitavAn|
He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
8 punarityAdishad yUyam ekaikAM yaShTiM vinA vastrasaMpuTaH pUpaH kaTibandhe tAmrakhaNDa ncha eShAM kimapi mA grahlIta,
He commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no brass coin money in their purse,
9 mArgayAtrAyai pAdeShUpAnahau dattvA dve uttarIye mA paridhadvvaM|
but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.
10 aparamapyuktaM tena yUyaM yasyAM puryyAM yasya niveshanaM pravekShyatha tAM purIM yAvanna tyakShyatha tAvat tanniveshane sthAsyatha|
He said to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there.
11 tatra yadi kepi yuShmAkamAtithyaM na vidadhati yuShmAkaM kathAshcha na shR^iNvanti tarhi tatsthAnAt prasthAnasamaye teShAM viruddhaM sAkShyaM dAtuM svapAdAnAsphAlya rajaH sampAtayata; ahaM yuShmAn yathArthaM vachmi vichAradine tannagarasyAvasthAtaH sidomAmorayo rnagarayoravasthA sahyatarA bhaviShyati|
Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom [Burning] and Gomorrah [Rebellious people, Tyrants] in the day of judgment than for that city!”
12 atha te gatvA lokAnAM manaHparAvarttanIH kathA prachAritavantaH|
They went out and preached that people should teshuvah ·turn repent·.
13 evamanekAn bhUtAMshcha tyAjitavantastathA tailena marddayitvA bahUn janAnarogAnakArShuH|
They cast out many demons, and anointed many with oil who were sick, and healed them.
14 itthaM tasya sukhyAtishchaturdisho vyAptA tadA herod rAjA tannishamya kathitavAn, yohan majjakaH shmashAnAd utthita atohetostena sarvvA etA adbhutakriyAH prakAshante|
King Herod [Heroic] heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “John [Yah is gracious] the Immerser has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”
15 anye. akathayan ayam eliyaH, kepi kathitavanta eSha bhaviShyadvAdI yadvA bhaviShyadvAdinAM sadR^isha ekoyam|
But others said, “He is Elijah [My God Yah].” Others said, “He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.”
16 kintu herod ityAkarNya bhAShitavAn yasyAhaM shirashChinnavAn sa eva yohanayaM sa shmashAnAdudatiShThat|
But Herod [Heroic], when he heard this, said, “This is John [Yah is gracious], whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.”
17 pUrvvaM svabhrAtuH philipasya patnyA udvAhaM kR^itavantaM herodaM yohanavAdIt svabhAtR^ivadhU rna vivAhyA|
For Herod [Heroic] himself had sent out and arrested John [Yah is gracious], and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip [Loves horses]’s wife, for he had married her.
18 ataH kAraNAt herod lokaM prahitya yohanaM dhR^itvA bandhanAlaye baddhavAn|
For John [Yah is gracious] said to Herod [Heroic], “It violates the Torah ·Teaching· for you to marry your brother’s wife.”
19 herodiyA tasmai yohane prakupya taM hantum aichChat kintu na shaktA,
Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t,
20 yasmAd herod taM dhArmmikaM satpuruSha ncha j nAtvA sammanya rakShitavAn; tatkathAM shrutvA tadanusAreNa bahUni karmmANi kR^itavAn hR^iShTamanAstadupadeshaM shrutavAMshcha|
for Herod [Heroic] feared John [Yah is gracious], knowing that he was a upright and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.
21 kintu herod yadA svajanmadine pradhAnalokebhyaH senAnIbhyashcha gAlIlpradeshIyashreShThalokebhyashcha rAtrau bhojyamekaM kR^itavAn
Then a convenient day came, that Herod [Heroic] on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee [District, Circuit].
22 tasmin shubhadine herodiyAyAH kanyA sametya teShAM samakShaM saMnR^itya herodastena sahopaviShTAnA ncha toShamajIjanat tatA nR^ipaH kanyAmAha sma matto yad yAchase tadeva tubhyaM dAsye|
When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod [Heroic] and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
23 shapathaM kR^itvAkathayat ched rAjyArddhamapi yAchase tadapi tubhyaM dAsye|
He swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”
24 tataH sA bahi rgatvA svamAtaraM paprachCha kimahaM yAchiShye? tadA sAkathayat yohano majjakasya shiraH|
She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John [Yah is gracious] the Immerser.”
25 atha tUrNaM bhUpasamIpam etya yAchamAnAvadat kShaNesmin yohano majjakasya shiraH pAtre nidhAya dehi, etad yAche. ahaM|
She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, “I want you to give me right now the head of John [Yah is gracious] the Immerser on a platter.”
26 tasmAt bhUpo. atiduHkhitaH, tathApi svashapathasya sahabhojinA nchAnurodhAt tadana NgIkarttuM na shaktaH|
The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse ·to set aside, neutralize, violate, cast off, nullify, make void· her.
27 tatkShaNaM rAjA ghAtakaM preShya tasya shira AnetumAdiShTavAn|
Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John [Yah is gracious]’s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
28 tataH sa kArAgAraM gatvA tachChirashChitvA pAtre nidhAyAnIya tasyai kanyAyai dattavAn kanyA cha svamAtre dadau|
and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.
29 ananataraM yohanaH shiShyAstadvArttAM prApyAgatya tasya kuNapaM shmashAne. asthApayan|
When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
30 atha preShitA yIshoH sannidhau militA yad yach chakruH shikShayAmAsushcha tatsarvvavArttAstasmai kathitavantaH|
The apostles gathered themselves together to Yeshua [Salvation], and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.
31 sa tAnuvAcha yUyaM vijanasthAnaM gatvA vishrAmyata yatastatsannidhau bahulokAnAM samAgamAt te bhoktuM nAvakAshaM prAptAH|
He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
32 tataste nAvA vijanasthAnaM guptaM gagmuH|
They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.
33 tato lokanivahasteShAM sthAnAntarayAnaM dadarsha, aneke taM parichitya nAnApurebhyaH padairvrajitvA javena taiShAmagre yIshoH samIpa upatasthuH|
They saw them going, and many recognized him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him.
34 tadA yIshu rnAvo bahirgatya lokAraNyAnIM dR^iShTvA teShu karuNAM kR^itavAn yataste. arakShakameShA ivAsan tadA sa tAna nAnAprasa NgAn upadiShTavAn|
Yeshua [Salvation] came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
35 atha divAnte sati shiShyA etya yIshumUchire, idaM vijanasthAnaM dina nchAvasannaM|
When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him, and said, “This place is deserted, and it is late in the day.
36 lokAnAM kimapi khAdyaM nAsti, atashchaturdikShu grAmAn gantuM bhojyadravyANi kretu ncha bhavAn tAn visR^ijatu|
Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages, and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat.”
37 tadA sa tAnuvAcha yUyameva tAn bhojayata; tataste jagadu rvayaM gatvA dvishatasaMkhyakai rmudrApAdaiH pUpAn krItvA kiM tAn bhojayiShyAmaH?
But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii (200 days wages) worth of bread, and give them something to eat?”
38 tadA sa tAn pR^iShThavAn yuShmAkaM sannidhau kati pUpA Asate? gatvA pashyata; tataste dR^iShTvA tamavadan pa ncha pUpA dvau matsyau cha santi|
He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
39 tadA sa lokAn shaspopari paMktibhirupaveshayitum AdiShTavAn,
He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass.
40 tataste shataM shataM janAH pa nchAshat pa nchAshajjanAshcha paMktibhi rbhuvi samupavivishuH|
They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.
41 atha sa tAn pa nchapUpAn matsyadvaya ncha dhR^itvA svargaM pashyan IshvaraguNAn anvakIrttayat tAn pUpAn bhaMktvA lokebhyaH pariveShayituM shiShyebhyo dattavAn dvA matsyau cha vibhajya sarvvebhyo dattavAn|
He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all.
42 tataH sarvve bhuktvAtR^ipyan|
They all ate, and were filled.
43 anantaraM shiShyA avashiShTaiH pUpai rmatsyaishcha pUrNAn dvadasha DallakAn jagR^ihuH|
They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of the fish.
44 te bhoktAraH prAyaH pa ncha sahasrANi puruShA Asan|
Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.
45 atha sa lokAn visR^ijanneva nAvamAroDhuM svasmAdagre pAre baitsaidApuraM yAtu ncha shShyin vADhamAdiShTavAn|
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he himself sent the multitude away.
46 tadA sa sarvvAn visR^ijya prArthayituM parvvataM gataH|
After he had taken leave of them, he went up the mountain to pray.
47 tataH sandhyAyAM satyAM nauH sindhumadhya upasthitA kintu sa ekAkI sthale sthitaH|
When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48 atha sammukhavAtavahanAt shiShyA nAvaM vAhayitvA parishrAntA iti j nAtvA sa nishAchaturthayAme sindhUpari padbhyAM vrajan teShAM samIpametya teShAmagre yAtum udyataH|
Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about four o'clock in the morning he came to them, walking on the sea, and he would have passed by them,
49 kintu shiShyAH sindhUpari taM vrajantaM dR^iShTvA bhUtamanumAya ruruvuH,
but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
50 yataH sarvve taM dR^iShTvA vyAkulitAH| ataeva yIshustatkShaNaM taiH sahAlapya kathitavAn, susthirA bhUta, ayamahaM mA bhaiShTa|
for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them, and said to them, “Take heart! Ena Na [I AM (the Living God)]! Don’t be afraid.”
51 atha naukAmAruhya tasmin teShAM sannidhiM gate vAto nivR^ittaH; tasmAtte manaHsu vismitA AshcharyyaM menire|
He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled;
52 yataste manasAM kAThinyAt tat pUpIyam AshcharyyaM karmma na viviktavantaH|
for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.
53 atha te pAraM gatvA gineSharatpradeshametya taTa upasthitAH|
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
54 teShu naukAto bahirgateShu tatpradeshIyA lokAstaM parichitya
When they had come out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him,
55 chaturdikShu dhAvanto yatra yatra rogiNo narA Asan tAn sarvvAna khaTvopari nidhAya yatra kutrachit tadvArttAM prApuH tat sthAnam Anetum Arebhire|
and ran around that whole region, and began to bring those who were sick, on their mats, to where they heard he was.
56 tathA yatra yatra grAme yatra yatra pure yatra yatra pallyA ncha tena praveshaH kR^itastadvartmamadhye lokAH pIDitAn sthApayitvA tasya chelagranthimAtraM spraShTum teShAmarthe tadanuj nAM prArthayantaH yAvanto lokAH paspR^ishustAvanta eva gadAnmuktAH|
Wherever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch just the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched him were made well.
