1 atha saptAhaprathamadine. atipratyUShe tA yoShitaH sampAditaM sugandhidravyaM gR^ihItvA tadanyAbhiH kiyatIbhiH strIbhiH saha shmashAnaM yayuH|
But at early morning dawn on the first day of the week (Nissan 17, the day of First Fruits #1), they and some others came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.
2 kintu shmashAnadvArAt pAShANamapasAritaM dR^iShTvA
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3 tAH pravishya prabho rdehamaprApya
They entered in, and didn’t find the Master Yeshua's [Salvation]'s body.
4 vyAkulA bhavanti etarhi tejomayavastrAnvitau dvau puruShau tAsAM samIpe samupasthitau
While they were greatly perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.
5 tasmAttAH sha NkAyuktA bhUmAvadhomukhyasyasthuH| tadA tau tA Uchatu rmR^itAnAM madhye jIvantaM kuto mR^igayatha?
Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6 sotra nAsti sa udasthAt|
He is not here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee [District, Circuit],
7 pApinAM kareShu samarpitena krushe hatena cha manuShyaputreNa tR^itIyadivase shmashAnAdutthAtavyam iti kathAM sa galIli tiShThan yuShmabhyaM kathitavAn tAM smarata|
saying that the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinners devoted to sin ·miss the marks and be without share in the goal (and stained by definite crime vice)·, and be executed on the stake, and the third day rise again?”
8 tadA tasya sA kathA tAsAM manaHsu jAtA|
They remembered his words,
9 anantaraM shmashAnAd gatvA tA ekAdashashiShyAdibhyaH sarvvebhyastAM vArttAM kathayAmAsuH|
teshuvah ·completely returned· from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.
10 magdalInImariyam, yohanA, yAkUbo mAtA mariyam tadanyAH sa Nginyo yoShitashcha preritebhya etAH sarvvA vArttAH kathayAmAsuH
Now they were Mary of Magdala [Rebellion of City tower], Joanna, and Mary [Rebellion] the mother of James [Surplanter]. The other women with them told these things to the apostles.
11 kintu tAsAM kathAm anarthakAkhyAnamAtraM buddhvA kopi na pratyait|
These words seemed to them to be nonsense, and they didn’t trust them.
12 tadA pitara utthAya shmashAnAntikaM dadhAva, tatra cha prahvo bhUtvA pArshvaikasthApitaM kevalaM vastraM dadarsha; tasmAdAshcharyyaM manyamAno yadaghaTata tanmanasi vichArayan pratasthe|
But Peter [Rock] got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened.
13 tasminneva dine dvau shiyyau yirUshAlamashchatuShkroshAntaritam immAyugrAmaM gachChantau
Behold, two of them were going that same day (Nissan 17) to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia [7.93 mi; 11.1 km] from Jerusalem [City of peace].
14 tAsAM ghaTanAnAM kathAmakathayatAM
They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.
15 tayorAlApavichArayoH kAle yIshurAgatya tAbhyAM saha jagAma
While they talked and questioned together, Yeshua [Salvation] himself came near, and went with them.
16 kintu yathA tau taM na parichinutastadarthaM tayo rdR^iShTiH saMruddhA|
But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17 sa tau pR^iShTavAn yuvAM viShaNNau kiM vichArayantau gachChathaH?
He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”
18 tatastayoH kliyapAnAmA pratyuvAcha yirUshAlamapure. adhunA yAnyaghaTanta tvaM kevalavideshI kiM tadvR^ittAntaM na jAnAsi?
One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem [City of peace] who does not know the things which have happened there in these days?”
19 sa paprachCha kA ghaTanAH? tadA tau vaktumArebhAte yIshunAmA yo nAsaratIyo bhaviShyadvAdI Ishvarasya mAnuShANA ncha sAkShAt vAkye karmmaNi cha shaktimAnAsIt
He said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “The things concerning Yeshua [Salvation], the Nazarene [person from Branch, Separated one], who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;
20 tam asmAkaM pradhAnayAjakA vichArakAshcha kenApi prakAreNa krushe viddhvA tasya prANAnanAshayan tadIyA ghaTanAH;
and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and nailed him to the stake.
21 kintu ya isrAyelIyalokAn uddhArayiShyati sa evAyam ityAshAsmAbhiH kR^itA|tadyathA tathAstu tasyA ghaTanAyA adya dinatrayaM gataM|
But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel [God prevails]. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
22 adhikantvasmAkaM sa NginInAM kiyatstrINAM mukhebhyo. asambhavavAkyamidaM shrutaM;
Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;
23 tAH pratyUShe shmashAnaM gatvA tatra tasya deham aprApya vyAghuTyetvA proktavatyaH svargIsadUtau dR^iShTAvasmAbhistau chAvAdiShTAM sa jIvitavAn|
and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
24 tatosmAkaM kaishchit shmashAnamagamyata te. api strINAM vAkyAnurUpaM dR^iShTavantaH kintu taM nApashyan|
Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”
25 tadA sa tAvuvAcha, he abodhau he bhaviShyadvAdibhiruktavAkyaM pratyetuM vilambamAnau;
He said to them, “Foolish men, and slow of heart to trust in all that the prophets have spoken!
26 etatsarvvaduHkhaM bhuktvA svabhUtiprAptiH kiM khrIShTasya na nyAyyA?
Didn’t the Messiah [Anointed one] have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”
27 tataH sa mUsAgranthamArabhya sarvvabhaviShyadvAdinAM sarvvashAstre svasmin likhitAkhyAnAbhiprAyaM bodhayAmAsa|
Beginning from Moses [Drawn out] and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 atha gamyagrAmAbhyarNaM prApya tenAgre gamanalakShaNe darshite
They came near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.
29 tau sAdhayitvAvadatAM sahAvAbhyAM tiShTha dine gate sati rAtrirabhUt; tataH sa tAbhyAM sArddhaM sthAtuM gR^ihaM yayau|
They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over. (Finish of Nissan 17, nearing to the start of Nissan 18.)” He went in to stay with them.
30 pashchAdbhojanopaveshakAle sa pUpaM gR^ihItvA IshvaraguNAn jagAda ta ncha bhaMktvA tAbhyAM dadau|
When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the matzah ·unleavened bread· and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.
31 tadA tayo rdR^iShTau prasannAyAM taM pratyabhij natuH kintu sa tayoH sAkShAdantardadhe|
Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.
32 tatastau mithobhidhAtum Arabdhavantau gamanakAle yadA kathAmakathayat shAstrArtha nchabodhayat tadAvayo rbuddhiH kiM na prAjvalat?
They said to one another, “Did not our hearts burn within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”
33 tau tatkShaNAdutthAya yirUshAlamapuraM pratyAyayatuH, tatsthAne shiShyANAm ekAdashAnAM sa NginA ncha darshanaM jAtaM|
They rose up that very hour, teshuvah ·completely returned· to Jerusalem [City of peace], and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,
34 te prochuH prabhurudatiShThad iti satyaM shimone darshanamadAchcha|
saying, “The Master is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simeon [Hearing]!”
35 tataH pathaH sarvvaghaTanAyAH pUpabha njanena tatparichayasya cha sarvvavR^ittAntaM tau vaktumArebhAte|
They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the matzah ·unleavened bread·.
36 itthaM te parasparaM vadanti tatkAle yIshuH svayaM teShAM madhya protthaya yuShmAkaM kalyANaM bhUyAd ityuvAcha,
As they said these things, Yeshua [Salvation] himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be to you; Ena Na [I AM (the Living God)], do not be afraid.”
37 kintu bhUtaM pashyAma ityanumAya te samudvivijire treShushcha|
But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38 sa uvAcha, kuto duHkhitA bhavatha? yuShmAkaM manaHsu sandeha udeti cha kutaH?
He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 eShohaM, mama karau pashyata varaM spR^iShTvA pashyata, mama yAdR^ishAni pashyatha tAdR^ishAni bhUtasya mAMsAsthIni na santi|
See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”
40 ityuktvA sa hastapAdAn darshayAmAsa|
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 te. asambhavaM j nAtvA sAnandA na pratyayan| tataH sa tAn paprachCha, atra yuShmAkaM samIpe khAdyaM ki nchidasti?
While they still didn’t trust for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42 tataste kiyaddagdhamatsyaM madhu cha daduH
They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.
43 sa tadAdAya teShAM sAkShAd bubhuje
He took them, and ate in front of them.
44 kathayAmAsa cha mUsAvyavasthAyAM bhaviShyadvAdinAM grantheShu gItapustake cha mayi yAni sarvvANi vachanAni likhitAni tadanurUpANi ghaTiShyante yuShmAbhiH sArddhaM sthitvAhaM yadetadvAkyam avadaM tadidAnIM pratyakShamabhUt|
He said to them, “This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the Torah ·Teaching· of Moses [Drawn out], the Prophets, and the Psalms [Praises], concerning me must be fulfilled.”
45 atha tebhyaH shAstrabodhAdhikAraM datvAvadat,
Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures.
46 khrIShTenetthaM mR^itiyAtanA bhoktavyA tR^itIyadine cha shmashAnAdutthAtavya ncheti lipirasti;
He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Messiah [Anointed one] to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
47 tannAmnA yirUshAlamamArabhya sarvvadeshe manaHparAvarttanasya pApamochanasya cha susaMvAdaH prachArayitavyaH,
and in his name teshuvah ·complete repentance· and remission of abstract sins ·miss the marks· should be preached to all the nations, starting with Jerusalem [City of peace].
48 eShu sarvveShu yUyaM sAkShiNaH|
You are witnesses of these things.
49 apara ncha pashyata pitrA yat pratij nAtaM tat preShayiShyAmi, ataeva yAvatkAlaM yUyaM svargIyAM shaktiM na prApsyatha tAvatkAlaM yirUshAlamnagare tiShThata|
Behold, I send out the promise of 'Avi ·my Father· on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem [City of peace] until you are clothed with power from on high.”
50 atha sa tAn baithanIyAparyyantaM nItvA hastAvuttolya AshiSha vaktumArebhe
He led them out as far as Bethany [House of affliction], and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 AshiShaM vadanneva cha tebhyaH pR^ithag bhUtvA svargAya nIto. abhavat|
While he blessed them, he withdrew from them, and was carried up into heaven.
52 tadA te taM bhajamAnA mahAnandena yirUshAlamaM pratyAjagmuH|
They worshiped him, and teshuvah ·completely returned· to Jerusalem [City of peace] with great joy,
53 tato nirantaraM mandire tiShThanta Ishvarasya prashaMsAM dhanyavAda ncha karttam Arebhire| iti||
and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen ·So be it·.
