1 apara ncha nistArotsavAt paraM pa nchAshattame dine samupasthite sati te sarvve ekAchittIbhUya sthAna ekasmin militA Asan|
And, when the day of pentecost was filling up [the number of days] they were all together with one intent; —
2 etasminneva samaye. akasmAd AkAshAt prachaNDAtyugravAyoH shabdavad ekaH shabda Agatya yasmin gR^ihe ta upAvishan tad gR^ihaM samastaM vyApnot|
When there came suddenly out of heaven a sound, just as of a mighty rushing wind, —and it filled all the house where they were sitting;
3 tataH paraM vahnishikhAsvarUpA jihvAH pratyakShIbhUya vibhaktAH satyaH pratijanorddhve sthagitA abhUvan|
And there appeared unto them—parting asunder—tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them;
4 tasmAt sarvve pavitreNAtmanA paripUrNAH santa AtmA yathA vAchitavAn tadanusAreNAnyadeshIyAnAM bhAShA uktavantaH|
And they were all filled with Holy Spirit, and began to be speaking with other kinds of tongues just as the Spirit was giving unto them to be sounding forth.
5 tasmin samaye pR^ithivIsthasarvvadeshebhyo yihUdIyamatAvalambino bhaktalokA yirUshAlami prAvasan;
Now there were in Jerusalem sojourning Jews, reverent men from every nation who were under heaven;
6 tasyAH kathAyAH kiMvadantyA jAtatvAt sarvve lokA militvA nijanijabhAShayA shiShyANAM kathAkathanaM shrutvA samudvignA abhavan|
And this sound occurring the throng came together and was thrown into confusion, because each one severally heard in his own language them who were speaking;
7 sarvvaeva vismayApannA AshcharyyAnvitAshcha santaH parasparaM uktavantaH pashyata ye kathAM kathayanti te sarvve gAlIlIyalokAH kiM na bhavanti?
Yea they were beside themselves and did marvel, saying—Lo! are not all these who are speaking Galilaeans?
8 tarhi vayaM pratyekashaH svasvajanmadeshIyabhAShAbhiH kathA eteShAM shR^iNumaH kimidaM?
How then do, we, hear each one in our own language in which we were born?
9 pArthI-mAdI-arAmnaharayimdeshanivAsimano yihUdA-kappadakiyA-panta-AshiyA-
Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judaea also and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 phrugiyA-pamphuliyA-misaranivAsinaH kurINInikaTavarttilUbIyapradeshanivAsino romanagarAd AgatA yihUdIyalokA yihUdIyamatagrAhiNaH krItIyA arAbIyAdayo lokAshcha ye vayam
Phrygia also and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of the Libya that is towards Cyrene, and the sojourning Romans, —both Jews and proselytes,
11 asmAkaM nijanijabhAShAbhireteShAm IshvarIyamahAkarmmavyAkhyAnaM shR^iNumaH|
Cretans and Arabians, we do hear them speaking in our own tongues the magnificent things of God.
12 itthaM te sarvvaeva vismayApannAH sandigdhachittAH santaH parasparamUchuH, asya ko bhAvaH?
But they were all beside themselves and were utterly at a loss, saying one to another—What doth this please to be?
13 apare kechit parihasya kathitavanta ete navInadrAkShArasena mattA abhavan|
While, others, in mockery were saying—With sweet wine, are they drunken!
14 tadA pitara ekAdashabhi rjanaiH sAkaM tiShThan tAllokAn uchchaiHkAram avadat, he yihUdIyA he yirUshAlamnivAsinaH sarvve, avadhAnaM kR^itvA madIyavAkyaM budhyadhvaM|
But, taking his stand, Peter with the eleven lifted up his voice, and sounded out unto them—Ye men of Judaea, and all ye who are sojourning in Jerusalem! Let, this, unto you be known, and give ear unto my declarations; —
15 idAnIm ekayAmAd adhikA velA nAsti tasmAd yUyaM yad anumAtha mAnavA ime madyapAnena mattAstanna|
For not, as, ye, suppose, are these men drunken, for it is the third hour of the day; —
16 kintu yoyelbhaviShyadvaktraitadvAkyamuktaM yathA,
But this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel—
17 IshvaraH kathayAmAsa yugAntasamaye tvaham| varShiShyAmi svamAtmAnaM sarvvaprANyupari dhruvam| bhAvivAkyaM vadiShyanti kanyAH putrAshcha vastutaH|pratyAdesha ncha prApsyanti yuShmAkaM yuvamAnavAH| tathA prAchInalokAstu svapnAn drakShyanti nishchitaM|
And it shall be, in the last days saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and, your young men, visions shall see and, your elders, in dreams shall dream, —
18 varShiShyAmi tadAtmAnaM dAsadAsIjanopiri| tenaiva bhAvivAkyaM te vadiShyanti hi sarvvashaH|
And, even upon my men-servants and upon my maid-servants in those days, will I pour out of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy;
19 Urddhvasthe gagaNe chaiva nIchasthe pR^ithivItale| shoNitAni bR^ihadbhAnUn ghanadhUmAdikAni cha| chihnAni darshayiShyAmi mahAshcharyyakriyAstathA|
And I will set forth wonders in the heaven above, and signs upon the earth beneath, —blood and fire and vapour of smoke:
20 mahAbhayAnakasyaiva taddinasya pareshituH| purAgamAd raviH kR^iShNo raktashchandro bhaviShyataH|
The sun, shall be turned into darkness and, the moon, into blood, —before the coming of the day of the Lord, the great and manifest [day];
21 kintu yaH parameshasya nAmni samprArthayiShyate| saeva manujo nUnaM paritrAto bhaviShyati||
And it shall be—Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.
22 ato he isrAyelvaMshIyalokAH sarvve kathAyAmetasyAm mano nidhaddhvaM nAsaratIyo yIshurIshvarasya manonItaH pumAn etad IshvarastatkR^itairAshcharyyAdbhutakarmmabhi rlakShaNaishcha yuShmAkaM sAkShAdeva pratipAditavAn iti yUyaM jAnItha|
Ye men of Israel! hear these words: —Jesus the Nazarene, a man pointed out of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs, which God did through him in your midst, just as ye yourselves know,
23 tasmin yIshau Ishvarasya pUrvvanishchitamantraNAnirUpaNAnusAreNa mR^ityau samarpite sati yUyaM taM dhR^itvA duShTalokAnAM hastaiH krushe vidhitvAhata|
The same, by the marked out counsel and foreknowledge of God given up, through the hands of lawless men, suspending, ye slew,
24 kintvIshvarastaM nidhanasya bandhanAnmochayitvA udasthApayat yataH sa mR^ityunA baddhastiShThatIti na sambhavati|
Whom, God, raised up, loosing the pangs of death, inasmuch as it was, not possible, for him to continue held fast by it.
25 etastin dAyUdapi kathitavAn yathA, sarvvadA mama sAkShAttaM sthApaya parameshvaraM| sthite maddakShiNe tasmin skhaliShyAmi tvahaM nahi|
For, David, saith concerning him—I foresaw the Lord before me continually, because he is, on my right hand, that I may not be shaken;
26 AnandiShyati taddheto rmAmakInaM manastu vai| AhlAdiShyati jihvApi madIyA tu tathaiva cha| pratyAshayA sharIrantu madIyaM vaishayiShyate|
For this reason, was my heart made glad and my tongue exulted, —ye further, even my flesh, shall encamp on hope:
27 paraloke yato hetostvaM mAM naiva hi tyakShyasi| svakIyaM puNyavantaM tvaM kShayituM naiva dAsyasi| evaM jIvanamArgaM tvaM mAmeva darshayiShyasi| (Hadēs )
Because thou wilt not abandon my soul unto hades, neither wilt thou give thy man of lovingkindness to see corruption; (Hadēs )
28 svasammukhe ya Anando dakShiNe svasya yat sukhaM| anantaM tena mAM pUrNaM kariShyasi na saMshayaH||
Thou madest known unto me paths of life, thou wilt make me full of gladness with thy countenance.
29 he bhrAtaro. asmAkaM tasya pUrvvapuruShasya dAyUdaH kathAM spaShTaM kathayituM mAm anumanyadhvaM, sa prANAn tyaktvA shmashAne sthApitobhavad adyApi tat shmashAnam asmAkaM sannidhau vidyate|
Brethren! it is, allowable, to say with freedom of speech unto you, concerning the patriarch David, —that he both died and was buried, and, his tomb, is among us until this day.
30 phalato laukikabhAvena dAyUdo vaMshe khrIShTaM janma grAhayitvA tasyaiva siMhAsane samuveShTuM tamutthApayiShyati parameshvaraH shapathaM kutvA dAyUdaH samIpa imam a NgIkAraM kR^itavAn,
Being then, a prophet, and knowing that, with an oath, God had sworn unto him, of the fruit of his loins, to seat on his throne,
31 iti j nAtvA dAyUd bhaviShyadvAdI san bhaviShyatkAlIyaj nAnena khrIShTotthAne kathAmimAM kathayAmAsa yathA tasyAtmA paraloke na tyakShyate tasya sharIra ncha na kSheShyati; (Hadēs )
With foresight, spake he concerning the resurrection of the Christ—that neither was he abandoned unto hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. (Hadēs )
32 ataH parameshvara enaM yIshuM shmashAnAd udasthApayat tatra vayaM sarvve sAkShiNa Asmahe|
The same Jesus, hath God raised up, whereof, all we, are witnesses!
33 sa Ishvarasya dakShiNakareNonnatiM prApya pavitra Atmina pitA yama NgIkAraM kR^itavAn tasya phalaM prApya yat pashyatha shR^iNutha cha tadavarShat|
By the right hand of God, therefore, having been exalted, also, the promise of the Holy Spirit, having received from the Father, He hath poured out this which, yourselves, do see and hear.
34 yato dAyUd svargaM nAruroha kintu svayam imAM kathAm akathayad yathA, mama prabhumidaM vAkyamavadat parameshvaraH|
For, David, hath not ascended into the heavens; but he saith, himself, —Said the Lord unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand,
35 tava shatrUnahaM yAvat pAdapIThaM karomi na| tAvat kAlaM madIye tvaM dakShavArshva upAvisha|
Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
36 ato yaM yIshuM yUyaM krushe. ahata parameshvarastaM prabhutvAbhiShiktatvapade nyayuMkteti isrAyelIyA lokA nishchitaM jAnantu|
Assuredly, then, let all the house of Israel know: that, both Lord and Christ, hath God made him, even the same Jesus whom, ye, crucified!
37 etAdR^ishIM kathAM shrutvA teShAM hR^idayAnAM vidIrNatvAt te pitarAya tadanyapreritebhyashcha kathitavantaH, he bhrAtR^igaNa vayaM kiM kariShyAmaH?
And, when they heard this, they were pricked to the heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles—What are we to do, brethren?
38 tataH pitaraH pratyavadad yUyaM sarvve svaM svaM manaH parivarttayadhvaM tathA pApamochanArthaM yIshukhrIShTasya nAmnA majjitAshcha bhavata, tasmAd dAnarUpaM paritram AtmAnaM lapsyatha|
And Peter [said] unto them—Repent ye, and let each one of you be immersed, in the name of Jesus Christ, into the remission of your sins, —and ye shall receive the free-gift of the Holy Spirit;
39 yato yuShmAkaM yuShmatsantAnAnA ncha dUrasthasarvvalokAnA ncha nimittam arthAd asmAkaM prabhuH parameshvaro yAvato lAkAn AhvAsyati teShAM sarvveShAM nimittam ayama NgIkAra Aste|
For, unto you, is the promise, and unto your children, —and unto all them who are afar off: as many soever as the Lord our God shall call unto him.
40 etadanyAbhi rbahukathAbhiH pramANaM datvAkathayat etebhyo vipathagAmibhyo varttamAnalokebhyaH svAn rakShata|
And, with many different words, bare he frail witness, and went on exhorting them saying—Be saved from this perverse generation!
41 tataH paraM ye sAnandAstAM kathAm agR^ihlan te majjitA abhavan| tasmin divase prAyeNa trINi sahasrANi lokAsteShAM sapakShAH santaH
They, therefore, who welcomed his word, were immersed; and there were added, on that day, about three thousand souls.
42 preritAnAm upadeshe sa Ngatau pUpabha njane prArthanAsu cha manaHsaMyogaM kR^itvAtiShThan|
And they went on to give constant attention—unto the teaching of the apostles, and unto the fellowship, unto the breaking of bread, and unto the prayers.
43 preritai rnAnAprakAralakShaNeShu mahAshcharyyakarmamasu cha darshiteShu sarvvalokAnAM bhayamupasthitaM|
And there came on every soul, fear, and, many wonders and signs, through means of the apostles, were coming to pass.
44 vishvAsakAriNaH sarvva cha saha tiShThanataH| sveShAM sarvvAH sampattIH sAdhAraNyena sthApayitvAbhu njata|
And, all who believed, with one accord, began to hold all things common;
45 phalato gR^ihANi dravyANi cha sarvvANi vikrIya sarvveShAM svasvaprayojanAnusAreNa vibhajya sarvvebhyo. adadan|
and, their possessions and goods, were they selling and distributing them unto all, in so far as anyone had need.
46 sarvva ekachittIbhUya dine dine mandire santiShThamAnA gR^ihe gR^ihe cha pUpAnabha njanta Ishvarasya dhanyavAdaM kurvvanto lokaiH samAdR^itAH paramAnandena saralAntaHkaraNena bhojanaM pAna nchakurvvan|
And, daily giving attendance with one intent in the temple and, at home, breaking bread, they were partaking of food with exultation and singleness of heart;
47 parameshvaro dine dine paritrANabhAjanai rmaNDalIm avarddhayat|
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And, the Lord, was adding them who were being saved, daily, together.
