1 aparañca pīlātō yēṣāṁ gālīlīyānāṁ raktāni balīnāṁ raktaiḥ sahāmiśrayat tēṣāṁ gālīlīyānāṁ vr̥ttāntaṁ katipayajanā upasthāpya yīśavē kathayāmāsuḥ|
Now there were present some, in that very season, bringing tidings to him, concerning the Galilaeans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
2 tataḥ sa pratyuvāca tēṣāṁ lōkānām ētādr̥śī durgati rghaṭitā tatkāraṇād yūyaṁ kimanyēbhyō gālīlīyēbhyōpyadhikapāpinastān bōdhadhvē?
And, answering, he said unto them—Suppose ye, that, these Galilaeans, had become, sinners beyond all the Galilaeans, because, these things, they have suffered?
3 yuṣmānahaṁ vadāmi tathā na kintu manaḥsu na parāvarttitēṣu yūyamapi tathā naṁkṣyatha|
Nay! I tell you, but, except ye repent, ye, all, in like manner, shall perish.
4 aparañca śīlōhanāmna uccagr̥hasya patanād yē'ṣṭādaśajanā mr̥tāstē yirūśālami nivāsisarvvalōkēbhyō'dhikāparādhinaḥ kiṁ yūyamityaṁ bōdhadhvē?
Or, those eighteen, upon whom fell the tower in Siloam, and slew them, suppose ye that, they, had become, debtors, beyond all the men who were dwelling in Jerusalem?
5 yuṣmānahaṁ vadāmi tathā na kintu manaḥsu na parivarttitēṣu yūyamapi tathā naṁkṣyatha|
Nay! I tell you, but, except ye repent, ye, all, in the same way, shall perish.
6 anantaraṁ sa imāṁ dr̥ṣṭāntakathāmakathayad ēkō janō drākṣākṣētramadhya ēkamuḍumbaravr̥kṣaṁ rōpitavān| paścāt sa āgatya tasmin phalāni gavēṣayāmāsa,
And he went on to speak this parable: —A certain man had, a fig-tree, planted in his vineyard, and he canto seeking fruit therein, and found none.
7 kintu phalāprāptēḥ kāraṇād udyānakāraṁ bhr̥tyaṁ jagāda, paśya vatsaratrayaṁ yāvadāgatya ētasminnuḍumbaratarau kṣalānyanvicchāmi, kintu naikamapi prapnōmi tarurayaṁ kutō vr̥thā sthānaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhati? ēnaṁ chindhi|
And he said unto the vine-dresser—Lo! three years, I come, seeking fruit in this fig-tree, and find none. Cut it down! Why doth it make, even the round useless?
8 tatō bhr̥tyaḥ pratyuvāca, hē prabhō punarvarṣamēkaṁ sthātum ādiśa; ētasya mūlasya caturdikṣu khanitvāham ālavālaṁ sthāpayāmi|
And, he, answering, saith unto him—Sir! let it alone this year also, until such time as I dig about it, and throw in manure, —
9 tataḥ phalituṁ śaknōti yadi na phalati tarhi paścāt chētsyasi|
and if it may bear fruit for the future; …but, otherwise, certainly, thou shalt cut it down.
10 atha viśrāmavārē bhajanagēhē yīśurupadiśati
And he was teaching in one of the synagogues, on the Sabbath.
11 tasmit samayē bhūtagrastatvāt kubjībhūyāṣṭādaśavarṣāṇi yāvat kēnāpyupāyēna r̥ju rbhavituṁ na śaknōti yā durbbalā strī,
And lo! a woman, having a spirit of weakness eighteen years, —and was bowed together, and unable to lift herself up, at all.
12 tāṁ tatrōpasthitāṁ vilōkya yīśustāmāhūya kathitavān hē nāri tava daurbbalyāt tvaṁ muktā bhava|
And, seeing her, Jesus called her and said to her—Woman! thou art loosed from thy weakness, —
13 tataḥ paraṁ tasyā gātrē hastārpaṇamātrāt sā r̥jurbhūtvēśvarasya dhanyavādaṁ karttumārēbhē|
and laid on her his hands; and, instantly, she was made straight again, and began glorifying God.
14 kintu viśrāmavārē yīśunā tasyāḥ svāsthyakaraṇād bhajanagēhasyādhipatiḥ prakupya lōkān uvāca, ṣaṭsu dinēṣu lōkaiḥ karmma karttavyaṁ tasmāddhētōḥ svāsthyārthaṁ tēṣu dinēṣu āgacchata, viśrāmavārē māgacchata|
But the synagogue-ruler, answering, being greatly displeased that, on the Sabbath, Jesus had healed, began saying unto the multitude—Six days, there are, in which men ought to get their work done; On them, therefore, come and be healed, and, not on the day of rest.
15 tadā pabhuḥ pratyuvāca rē kapaṭinō yuṣmākam ēkaikō janō viśrāmavārē svīyaṁ svīyaṁ vr̥ṣabhaṁ gardabhaṁ vā bandhanānmōcayitvā jalaṁ pāyayituṁ kiṁ na nayati?
The Lord answered him, and said—Hypocrites! Doth not, each one of you, on the Sabbath, loose his ox or ass from the manger, and, leading it away, give it drink?
16 tarhyāṣṭādaśavatsarān yāvat śaitānā baddhā ibrāhīmaḥ santatiriyaṁ nārī kiṁ viśrāmavārē na mōcayitavyā?
But, this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had bound, lo! eighteen years, was there not a needs-be that she should be loosed from this bond, on the day of rest?
17 ēṣu vākyēṣu kathitēṣu tasya vipakṣāḥ salajjā jātāḥ kintu tēna kr̥tasarvvamahākarmmakāraṇāt lōkanivahaḥ sānandō'bhavat|
And, as he was saying, these, things, all who had been setting themselves against him were being put to shame; and, all the multitude, were rejoicing over all the glorious things which were being brought to pass by him.
18 anantaraṁ sōvadad īśvarasya rājyaṁ kasya sadr̥śaṁ? kēna tadupamāsyāmi?
He went on to say, therefore—Whereunto, is the kingdom of God, like? And, whereunto, shall I liken it?
19 yat sarṣapabījaṁ gr̥hītvā kaścijjana udyāna uptavān tad bījamaṅkuritaṁ sat mahāvr̥kṣō'jāyata, tatastasya śākhāsu vihāyasīyavihagā āgatya nyūṣuḥ, tadrājyaṁ tādr̥śēna sarṣapabījēna tulyaṁ|
It is, like, unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his own garden; and it grew, and became a tree, and, the birds of heaven, lodged amongst its branches.
20 punaḥ kathayāmāsa, īśvarasya rājyaṁ kasya sadr̥śaṁ vadiṣyāmi? yat kiṇvaṁ kācit strī gr̥hītvā drōṇatrayaparimitagōdhūmacūrṇēṣu sthāpayāmāsa,
And, again, he said—Whereunto, shall I liken the kingdom of God?
21 tataḥ kramēṇa tat sarvvagōdhūmacūrṇaṁ vyāpnōti, tasya kiṇvasya tulyam īśvarasya rājyaṁ|
It is, like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until, the whole, was leavened.
22 tataḥ sa yirūśālamnagaraṁ prati yātrāṁ kr̥tvā nagarē nagarē grāmē grāmē samupadiśan jagāma|
And he was journeying on, city by city and village by village, and making, progress, unto Jerusalem.
23 tadā kaścijjanastaṁ papraccha, hē prabhō kiṁ kēvalam alpē lōkāḥ paritrāsyantē?
And one said unto him—Lord! are they, few, who are being saved? And, he, said unto them—
24 tataḥ sa lōkān uvāca, saṁkīrṇadvārēṇa pravēṣṭuṁ yataghvaṁ, yatōhaṁ yuṣmān vadāmi, bahavaḥ pravēṣṭuṁ cēṣṭiṣyantē kintu na śakṣyanti|
Be striving to enter through the narrow door; for, many, I say unto you, will seek to enter, and will not be able, —
25 gr̥hapatinōtthāya dvārē ruddhē sati yadi yūyaṁ bahiḥ sthitvā dvāramāhatya vadatha, hē prabhō hē prabhō asmatkāraṇād dvāraṁ mōcayatu, tataḥ sa iti prativakṣyati, yūyaṁ kutratyā lōkā ityahaṁ na jānāmi|
when once the householder shall rouse himself, and lock the door, and ye begin to stand, outside, and to knock at the door, saying—Lord! open to us; and he shall answer and say unto you—I know you not, whence ye are.
26 tadā yūyaṁ vadiṣyatha, tava sākṣād vayaṁ bhējanaṁ pānañca kr̥tavantaḥ, tvañcāsmākaṁ nagarasya pathi samupadiṣṭavān|
Then, will ye begin to say—We did eat and drink in thy presence, and, in our broadways, thou didst, teach;
27 kintu sa vakṣyati, yuṣmānahaṁ vadāmi, yūyaṁ kutratyā lōkā ityahaṁ na jānāmi; hē durācāriṇō yūyaṁ mattō dūrībhavata|
And he will speak, saying unto you—I know not whence ye are; Depart from me, all workers of unrighteous—
28 tadā ibrāhīmaṁ ishākaṁ yākūbañca sarvvabhaviṣyadvādinaśca īśvarasya rājyaṁ prāptān svāṁśca bahiṣkr̥tān dr̥ṣṭvā yūyaṁ rōdanaṁ dantairdantagharṣaṇañca kariṣyatha|
There, will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, as soon as ye see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and, yourselves, being thrust forth outside.
29 aparañca pūrvvapaścimadakṣiṇōttaradigbhyō lōkā āgatya īśvarasya rājyē nivatsyanti|
And they shall have come from east and west, and from north and south, and be made recline in the kingdom of God.
30 paśyatētthaṁ śēṣīyā lōkā agrā bhaviṣyanti, agrīyā lōkāśca śēṣā bhaviṣyanti|
And lo! there are, last, who shall be, first, and there are, first, who shall be, last;
31 aparañca tasmin dinē kiyantaḥ phirūśina āgatya yīśuṁ prōcuḥ, bahirgaccha, sthānādasmāt prasthānaṁ kuru, hērōd tvāṁ jighāṁsati|
In that very hour, came near certain Pharisees, saying unto him, Go forth, and be journeying hence, because, Herod, desireth to slay thee.
32 tataḥ sa pratyavōcat paśyatādya śvaśca bhūtān vihāpya rōgiṇō'rōgiṇaḥ kr̥tvā tr̥tīyēhni sētsyāmi, kathāmētāṁ yūyamitvā taṁ bhūrimāyaṁ vadata|
And he said unto them—Go and tell this fox, Lo! I am casting out demons, and, cures, am I finishing, to-day, and to-morrow, —
33 tatrāpyadya śvaḥ paraśvaśca mayā gamanāgamanē karttavyē, yatō hētō ryirūśālamō bahiḥ kutrāpi kōpi bhaviṣyadvādī na ghāniṣyatē|
and, on the third, I am to be made perfect. Nevertheless, I must needs, to-day, and tomorrow, and the following, be journeying on, because it is impossible that a prophet perish, outside Jerusalem.
34 hē yirūśālam hē yirūśālam tvaṁ bhaviṣyadvādinō haṁsi tavāntikē prēritān prastarairmārayasi ca, yathā kukkuṭī nijapakṣādhaḥ svaśāvakān saṁgr̥hlāti, tathāhamapi tava śiśūn saṁgrahītuṁ kativārān aicchaṁ kintu tvaṁ naicchaḥ|
Jerusalem! Jerusalem! she that slayeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! How often, have I desired to gather together thy children, like as a hen, her own brood, under her wings, —and ye did not desire!
35 paśyata yuṣmākaṁ vāsasthānāni prōcchidyamānāni parityaktāni ca bhaviṣyanti; yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthaṁ vadāmi, yaḥ prabhō rnāmnāgacchati sa dhanya iti vācaṁ yāvatkālaṁ na vadiṣyatha, tāvatkālaṁ yūyaṁ māṁ na drakṣyatha|
Lo! your house is left to you. [And] I say unto you—In nowise shall ye see me, until ye say, —Blessed, is he that cometh in the name of the Lord!
