1 jalapathēnāsmākam itōliyādēśaṁ prati yātrāyāṁ niścitāyāṁ satyāṁ tē yūliyanāmnō mahārājasya saṁghātāntargatasya sēnāpatēḥ samīpē paulaṁ tadanyān katinayajanāṁśca samārpayan|
Ut autem iudicatum est navigare eum in Italiam, et tradi Paulum cum reliquis custodiis centurioni nomine Iulio cohortis Augustae,
2 vayam ādrāmuttīyaṁ pōtamēkam āruhya āśiyādēśasya taṭasamīpēna yātuṁ matiṁ kr̥tvā laṅgaram utthāpya pōtam amōcayāma; mākidaniyādēśasthathiṣalanīkīnivāsyāristārkhanāmā kaścid janō'smābhiḥ sārddham āsīt|
ascendentes navem Adrumetinam, incipientes navigare circa Asiae loca, sustulimus, perseverante nobiscum Aristarcho Macedone Thessalonicensi.
3 parasmin divasē 'smābhiḥ sīdōnnagarē pōtē lāgitē tatra yūliyaḥ sēnāpatiḥ paulaṁ prati saujanyaṁ pradarthya sāntvanārthaṁ bandhubāndhavān upayātum anujajñau|
Sequenti autem die devenimus Sidonem. Humane autem tractans Iulius Paulum, permisit ad amicos ire, et curam sui agere.
4 tasmāt pōtē mōcitē sati sammukhavāyōḥ sambhavād vayaṁ kuprōpadvīpasya tīrasamīpēna gatavantaḥ|
Et inde cum sustulissemus, subnavigavimus Cyprum, propterea quod essent venti contrarii.
5 kilikiyāyāḥ pāmphūliyāyāśca samudrasya pāraṁ gatvā lūkiyādēśāntargataṁ murānagaram upātiṣṭhāma|
Et pelagus Ciliciae, et Pamphyliae navigantes, venimus Lystram, quae est Lyciae:
6 tatsthānād itāliyādēśaṁ gacchati yaḥ sikandariyānagarasya pōtastaṁ tatra prāpya śatasēnāpatistaṁ pōtam asmān ārōhayat|
et ibi inveniens centurio navem Alexandrinam navigantem in Italiam, transposuit nos in eam.
7 tataḥ paraṁ bahūni dināni śanaiḥ śanaiḥ rgatvā knīdapārśvōpasthtiḥ pūrvvaṁ pratikūlēna pavanēna vayaṁ salmōnyāḥ sammukham upasthāya krītyupadvīpasya tīrasamīpēna gatavantaḥ|
Et cum multis diebus tarde navigaremus, et vix devenissemus contra Gnidum, prohibente nos vento, adnavigavimus Cretae iuxta Salmonem:
8 kaṣṭēna tamuttīryya lāsēyānagarasyādhaḥ sundaranāmakaṁ khātam upātiṣṭhāma|
et vix iuxta navigantes, venimus in locum quendam, qui vocatur Boniportus, cui iuxta erat civitas Thalassa.
9 itthaṁ bahutithaḥ kālō yāpita upavāsadinañcātītaṁ, tatkāraṇāt nauvartmani bhayaṅkarē sati paulō vinayēna kathitavān,
Multo autem tempore peracto, et cum iam non esset tuta navigatio, eo quod ieiunium iam praeterisset, consolabatur eos Paulus,
10 hē mahēcchā ahaṁ niścayaṁ jānāmi yātrāyāmasyām asmākaṁ klēśā bahūnāmapacayāśca bhaviṣyanti, tē kēvalaṁ pōtasāmagryōriti nahi, kintvasmākaṁ prāṇānāmapi|
dicens eis: Viri, video quoniam cum iniuria, et multo damno non solum oneris, et navis, sed etiam animarum nostrarum incipit esse navigatio.
11 tadā śatasēnāpatiḥ paulōktavākyatōpi karṇadhārasya pōtavaṇijaśca vākyaṁ bahumaṁsta|
Centurio autem gubernatori et nauclero magis credebat, quam his, quae a Paulo dicebantur.
12 tat khātaṁ śītakālē vāsārhasthānaṁ na tasmād avācīpratīcōrdiśōḥ krītyāḥ phainīkiyakhātaṁ yātuṁ yadi śaknuvantastarhi tatra śītakālaṁ yāpayituṁ prāyēṇa sarvvē mantrayāmāsuḥ|
Et cum aptus portus non esset ad hiemandum, plurimi statuerunt consilium navigare inde, si quomodo possent, devenientes Phoenicen, hiemare, portum Cretae respicientem ad Africum, et ad Corum.
13 tataḥ paraṁ dakṣiṇavāyu rmandaṁ vahatīti vilōkya nijābhiprāyasya siddhēḥ suyōgō bhavatīti buddhvā pōtaṁ mōcayitvā krītyupadvīpasya tīrasamīpēna calitavantaḥ|
Aspirante autem Austro, aestimantes propositum se tenere, cum sustulissent de Asson, legebant Cretam.
14 kintvalpakṣaṇāt paramēva urakludōnnāmā pratikūlaḥ pracaṇḍō vāyu rvahan pōtē'lagīt
Non post multum autem misit se contra ipsam ventus Typhonicus, qui vocatur Euroaquilo.
15 tasyābhimukhaṁ gantum pōtasyāśaktatvād vayaṁ vāyunā svayaṁ nītāḥ|
Cumque arrepta esset navis, et non posset conari in ventum, data nave flatibus, ferebamur.
16 anantaraṁ klaudīnāmna upadvīpasya kūlasamīpēna pōtaṁ gamayitvā bahunā kaṣṭēna kṣudranāvam arakṣāma|
In insulam autem quandam decurrentes, quae vocatur Cauda, potuimus vix obtinere scapham.
17 tē tāmāruhya rajjcā pōtasyādhōbhāgam abadhnan tadanantaraṁ cēt pōtō saikatē lagatīti bhayād vātavasanānyamōcayan tataḥ pōtō vāyunā cālitaḥ|
Qua sublata, adiutoriis utebantur, accingentes navem, timentes ne in Syrtim inciderent, summisso vase sic ferebantur.
18 kintu kramaśō vāyōḥ prabalatvāt pōtō dōlāyamānō'bhavat parasmin divasē pōtasthāni katipayāni dravyāṇi tōyē nikṣiptāni|
Valida autem nobis tempestate iactatis, sequenti die iactum fecerunt:
19 tr̥tīyadivasē vayaṁ svahastaiḥ pōtasajjanadravyāṇi nikṣiptavantaḥ|
et tertia die suis manibus armamenta navis proiecerunt.
20 tatō bahudināni yāvat sūryyanakṣatrādīni samācchannāni tatō 'tīva vātyāgamād asmākaṁ prāṇarakṣāyāḥ kāpi pratyāśā nātiṣṭhat|
Neque autem sole, neque sideribus apparentibus per plures dies, et tempestate non exigua imminente, iam ablata erat spes omnis salutis nostrae.
21 bahudinēṣu lōkairanāhārēṇa yāpitēṣu sarvvēṣāṁ sākṣat paulastiṣṭhan akathayat, hē mahēcchāḥ krītyupadvīpāt pōtaṁ na mōcayitum ahaṁ pūrvvaṁ yad avadaṁ tadgrahaṇaṁ yuṣmākam ucitam āsīt tathā kr̥tē yuṣmākam ēṣā vipad ēṣō'pacayaśca nāghaṭiṣyētām|
Et cum multa ieiunatio fuisset, tunc stans Paulus in medio eorum, dixit: Oportebat quidem, o viri, audito me, non tollere a Creta, lucrique facere iniuriam hanc, et iacturam.
22 kintu sāmprataṁ yuṣmān vinīya bravīmyahaṁ, yūyaṁ na kṣubhyata yuṣmākam ēkasyāpi prāṇinō hāni rna bhaviṣyati, kēvalasya pōtasya hāni rbhaviṣyati|
Et nunc suadeo vobis bono animo esse. amissio enim nullius animae erit ex vobis, praeterquam navis.
23 yatō yasyēśvarasya lōkō'haṁ yañcāhaṁ paricarāmi tadīya ēkō dūtō hyō rātrau mamāntikē tiṣṭhan kathitavān,
Astitit enim mihi hac nocte Angelus Dei, cuius sum ego, et cui deservio,
24 hē paula mā bhaiṣīḥ kaisarasya sammukhē tvayōpasthātavyaṁ; tavaitān saṅginō lōkān īśvarastubhyaṁ dattavān|
dicens: Ne timeas Paule, Caesari te oportet assistere: et ecce donavit tibi Deus omnes, qui navigant tecum.
25 ataēva hē mahēcchā yūyaṁ sthiramanasō bhavata mahyaṁ yā kathākathi sāvaśyaṁ ghaṭiṣyatē mamaitādr̥śī viśvāsa īśvarē vidyatē,
Propter quod bono animo estote viri: credo enim Deo, quia sic erit, quemadmodum dictum est mihi.
26 kintu kasyacid upadvīpasyōpari patitavyam asmābhiḥ|
In insulam autem quandam oportet nos devenire.
27 tataḥ param ādriyāsamudrē pōtastathaiva dōlāyamānaḥ san itastatō gacchan caturdaśadivasasya rātrē rdvitīyapraharasamayē kasyacit sthalasya samīpamupatiṣṭhatīti pōtīyalōkā anvamanyanta|
Sed posteaquam quartadecima nox supervenit, navigantibus nobis in Adria circa mediam noctem, suspicabantur nautae apparere sibi aliquam regionem.
28 tatastē jalaṁ parimāya tatra viṁśati rvyāmā jalānīti jñātavantaḥ| kiñciddūraṁ gatvā punarapi jalaṁ parimitavantaḥ| tatra pañcadaśa vyāmā jalāni dr̥ṣṭvā
Qui et summittentes bolidem, invenerunt passus viginti: et pusillum inde separati, invenerunt passus quindecim.
29 cēt pāṣāṇē lagatīti bhayāt pōtasya paścādbhāgataścaturō laṅgarān nikṣipya divākaram apēkṣya sarvvē sthitavantaḥ|
Timentes autem ne in aspera loca incideremus, de puppi mittentes anchoras quattuor, optabant diem fieri.
30 kintu pōtīyalōkāḥ pōtāgrabhāgē laṅgaranikṣēpaṁ chalaṁ kr̥tvā jaladhau kṣudranāvam avarōhya palāyitum acēṣṭanta|
Nautis vero quaerentibus fugere de navi, cum misissent scapham in mare, sub obtentu quasi inciperent a prora anchoras extendere,
31 tataḥ paulaḥ sēnāpatayē sainyagaṇāya ca kathitavān, ētē yadi pōtamadhyē na tiṣṭhanti tarhi yuṣmākaṁ rakṣaṇaṁ na śakyaṁ|
dixit Paulus Centurioni, et militibus: Nisi hi in navi manserint, vos salvi fieri non potestis.
32 tadā sēnāgaṇō rajjūn chitvā nāvaṁ jalē patitum adadāt|
Tunc absciderunt milites funes scaphae, et passi sunt eam excidere.
33 prabhātasamayē paulaḥ sarvvān janān bhōjanārthaṁ prārthya vyāharat, adya caturdaśadināni yāvad yūyam apēkṣamānā anāhārāḥ kālam ayāpayata kimapi nābhuṁgdhaṁ|
Et cum lux inciperet fieri, rogabat Paulus omnes sumere cibum, dicens: Quartadecima die hodie expectantes ieiuni permanetis, nihil accipientes.
34 atō vinayē'haṁ bhakṣyaṁ bhujyatāṁ tatō yuṣmākaṁ maṅgalaṁ bhaviṣyati, yuṣmākaṁ kasyacijjanasya śirasaḥ kēśaikōpi na naṁkṣyati|
Propter quod rogo vos accipere cibum pro salute vestra: quia nullius vestrum capillus de capite peribit.
35 iti vyāhr̥tya paulaṁ pūpaṁ gr̥hītvēśvaraṁ dhanyaṁ bhāṣamāṇastaṁ bhaṁktvā bhōktum ārabdhavān|
Et cum haec dixisset, sumens panem, gratias egit Deo in conspectu omnium: et cum fregisset, coepit manducare.
36 anantaraṁ sarvvē ca susthirāḥ santaḥ khādyāni parpyagr̥hlan|
Animaequiores autem facti omnes, et ipsi sumpserunt cibum.
37 asmākaṁ pōtē ṣaṭsaptatyadhikaśatadvayalōkā āsan|
Eramus vero universae animae in navi ducentae septuaginta sex.
38 sarvvēṣu lōkēṣu yathēṣṭaṁ bhuktavatsu pōtasthan gōdhūmān jaladhau nikṣipya taiḥ pōtasya bhārō laghūkr̥taḥ|
Et satiati cibo alleviabant navem, iactantes triticum in mare.
39 dinē jātē'pi sa kō dēśa iti tadā na paryyacīyata; kintu tatra samataṭam ēkaṁ khātaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā yadi śaknumastarhi vayaṁ tasyābhyantaraṁ pōtaṁ gamayāma iti matiṁ kr̥tvā tē laṅgarān chittvā jaladhau tyaktavantaḥ|
Cum autem dies factus esset, terram non agnoscebant: sinum vero quendam considerabant habentem littus, in quem cogitabant, si possent, eiicere navem.
40 tathā karṇabandhanaṁ mōcayitvā pradhānaṁ vātavasanam uttōlya tīrasamīpaṁ gatavantaḥ|
Et cum anchoras sustulissent, committebant se mari, simul laxantes iuncturas gubernaculorum: et levato artemone secundum aurae flatum tendebant ad littus.
41 kintu dvayōḥ samudrayōḥ saṅgamasthānē saikatōpari pōtē nikṣiptē 'grabhāgē bādhitē paścādbhāgē prabalataraṅgō'lagat tēna pōtō bhagnaḥ|
Et cum incidissemus in locum dithalassum, impegerunt navem: et prora quidem fixa manebat immobilis, puppis vero solvebatur a vi maris.
42 tasmād bandayaścēd bāhubhistarantaḥ palāyantē ityāśaṅkayā sēnāgaṇastān hantum amantrayat;
Militum autem consilium fuit ut custodias occiderent: nequis cum enatasset, effugeret.
43 kintu śatasēnāpatiḥ paulaṁ rakṣituṁ prayatnaṁ kr̥tvā tān taccēṣṭāyā nivartya ityādiṣṭavān, yē bāhutaraṇaṁ jānanti tē'grē prōllampya samudrē patitvā bāhubhistīrttvā kūlaṁ yāntu|
Centurio autem volens servare Paulum, prohibuit fieri: iussitque eos, qui possent natare, emittere se in mare primos, et evadere, et ad terram exire:
44 aparam avaśiṣṭā janāḥ kāṣṭhaṁ pōtīyaṁ dravyaṁ vā yēna yat prāpyatē tadavalambya yāntu; itthaṁ sarvvē bhūmiṁ prāpya prāṇai rjīvitāḥ|
et ceteros alios in tabulis ferebant: quosdam super ea, quae de navi erant. Et sic factum est, ut omnes animae evaderent ad terram.
