1 pitaraḥ 2
1 sarvvān dvēṣān sarvvāṁśca chalān kāpaṭyānīrṣyāḥ samastaglānikathāśca dūrīkr̥tya
Putting away therefore all wickedness, and all deceit, and hypocrisy, and envy, and all slander,
2 yuṣmābhiḥ paritrāṇāya vr̥ddhiprāptyarthaṁ navajātaśiśubhiriva prakr̥taṁ vāgdugdhaṁ pipāsyatāṁ|
as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby to salvation,
3 yataḥ prabhu rmadhura ētasyāsvādaṁ yūyaṁ prāptavantaḥ|
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good:
4 aparaṁ mānuṣairavajñātasya kintvīśvarēṇābhirucitasya bahumūlyasya jīvatprastarasyēva tasya prabhōḥ sannidhim āgatā
coming to him, a living stone, though rejected by people but chosen by God, precious.
5 yūyamapi jīvatprastarā iva nicīyamānā ātmikamandiraṁ khrīṣṭēna yīśunā cēśvaratōṣakāṇām ātmikabalīnāṁ dānārthaṁ pavitrō yājakavargō bhavatha|
You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6 yataḥ śāstrē likhitamāstē, yathā, paśya pāṣāṇa ēkō 'sti sīyōni sthāpitō mayā| mukhyakōṇasya yōgyaḥ sa vr̥taścātīva mūlyavān| yō janō viśvasēt tasmin sa lajjāṁ na gamiṣyati|
Because it is contained in Scripture, "Look, I am laying in Zion a stone, a chosen precious cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."
7 viśvāsināṁ yuṣmākamēva samīpē sa mūlyavān bhavati kintvaviśvāsināṁ kr̥tē nicētr̥bhiravajñātaḥ sa pāṣāṇaḥ kōṇasya bhittimūlaṁ bhūtvā bādhājanakaḥ pāṣāṇaḥ skhalanakārakaśca śailō jātaḥ|
For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who do not believe, "The stone which the builders rejected, has become the chief cornerstone,"
8 tē cāviśvāsād vākyēna skhalanti skhalanē ca niyuktāḥ santi|
and, "a stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over." For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9 kintu yūyaṁ yēnāndhakāramadhyāt svakīyāścaryyadīptimadhyam āhūtāstasya guṇān prakāśayitum abhirucitō vaṁśō rājakīyō yājakavargaḥ pavitrā jātiradhikarttavyāḥ prajāśca jātāḥ|
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
10 pūrvvaṁ yūyaṁ tasya prajā nābhavata kintvidānīm īśvarasya prajā ādhvē| pūrvvam ananukampitā abhavata kintvidānīm anukampitā ādhvē|
who once were not a people, but now are God's people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 hē priyatamāḥ, yūyaṁ pravāsinō vidēśinaśca lōkā iva manasaḥ prātikūlyēna yōdhibhyaḥ śārīrikasukhābhilāṣēbhyō nivarttadhvam ityahaṁ vinayē|
Beloved, I urge you as foreigners and temporary residents, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 dēvapūjakānāṁ madhyē yuṣmākam ācāra ēvam uttamō bhavatu yathā tē yuṣmān duṣkarmmakārilōkāniva puna rna nindantaḥ kr̥pādr̥ṣṭidinē svacakṣurgōcarīyasatkriyābhya īśvarasya praśaṁsāṁ kuryyuḥ|
having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 tatō hētō ryūyaṁ prabhōranurōdhāt mānavasr̥ṣṭānāṁ kartr̥tvapadānāṁ vaśībhavata viśēṣatō bhūpālasya yataḥ sa śrēṣṭhaḥ,
Subject yourselves to every human institution for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
14 dēśādhyakṣāṇāñca yatastē duṣkarmmakāriṇāṁ daṇḍadānārthaṁ satkarmmakāriṇāṁ praśaṁsārthañca tēna prēritāḥ|
or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
15 itthaṁ nirbbōdhamānuṣāṇām ajñānatvaṁ yat sadācāribhi ryuṣmābhi rniruttarīkriyatē tad īśvarasyābhimataṁ|
For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people:
16 yūyaṁ svādhīnā ivācarata tathāpi duṣṭatāyā vēṣasvarūpāṁ svādhīnatāṁ dhārayanta iva nahi kintvīśvarasya dāsā iva|
as free, and not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but as slaves of God.
17 sarvvān samādriyadhvaṁ bhrātr̥vargē prīyadhvam īśvarād bibhīta bhūpālaṁ sammanyadhvaṁ|
Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18 hē dāsāḥ yūyaṁ sampūrṇādarēṇa prabhūnāṁ vaśyā bhavata kēvalaṁ bhadrāṇāṁ dayālūnāñca nahi kintvanr̥jūnāmapi|
Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
19 yatō 'nyāyēna duḥkhabhōgakāla īśvaracintayā yat klēśasahanaṁ tadēva priyaṁ|
For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
20 pāpaṁ kr̥tvā yuṣmākaṁ capēṭāghātasahanēna kā praśaṁsā? kintu sadācāraṁ kr̥tvā yuṣmākaṁ yad duḥkhasahanaṁ tadēvēśvarasya priyaṁ|
For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
21 tadarthamēva yūyam āhūtā yataḥ khrīṣṭō'pi yuṣmannimittaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhuktvā yūyaṁ yat tasya padacihnai rvrajēta tadarthaṁ dr̥ṣṭāntamēkaṁ darśitavān|
For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
22 sa kimapi pāpaṁ na kr̥tavān tasya vadanē kāpi chalasya kathā nāsīt|
who "committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth."
23 ninditō 'pi san sa pratinindāṁ na kr̥tavān duḥkhaṁ sahamānō 'pi na bhartsitavān kintu yathārthavicārayituḥ samīpē svaṁ samarpitavān|
Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;
24 vayaṁ yat pāpēbhyō nivr̥tya dharmmārthaṁ jīvāmastadarthaṁ sa svaśarīrēṇāsmākaṁ pāpāni kruśa ūḍhavān tasya prahārai ryūyaṁ svasthā abhavata|
who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose wounds you were healed.
25 yataḥ pūrvvaṁ yūyaṁ bhramaṇakārimēṣā ivādhvaṁ kintvadhunā yuṣmākam ātmanāṁ pālakasyādhyakṣasya ca samīpaṁ pratyāvarttitāḥ|
For you were going astray like sheep; but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
