1 anantajīvanasyāśāto jātāyā īśvarabhakte ryogyasya satyamatasya yat tatvajñānaṁ yaśca viśvāsa īśvarasyābhirucitalokai rlabhyate tadarthaṁ (aiōnios )
Paul, the servant of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the elect of God, and the perfect knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,
2 yīśukhrīṣṭasya prerita īśvarasya dāsaḥ paulo'haṁ sādhāraṇaviśvāsāt mama prakṛtaṁ dharmmaputraṁ tītaṁ prati likhami|
in the hope of eternal life, which God who cannot lie, promised before the eternal times, (aiōnios )
3 niṣkapaṭa īśvara ādikālāt pūrvvaṁ tat jīvanaṁ pratijñātavān svanirūpitasamaye ca ghoṣaṇayā tat prakāśitavān|
and manifested in his own seasons his word by preaching, with which I am intrusted, according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
4 mama trāturīśvarasyājñayā ca tasya ghoṣaṇaṁ mayi samarpitam abhūt| asmākaṁ tāta īśvaraḥ paritrātā prabhu ryīśukhrīṣṭaśca tubhyam anugrahaṁ dayāṁ śāntiñca vitaratu|
to Titus, my beloved son according to the common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Jesus Christ our Saviour.
5 tvaṁ yad asampūrṇakāryyāṇi sampūraye rmadīyādeśācca pratinagaraṁ prācīnagaṇān niyojayestadarthamahaṁ tvāṁ krītyupadvīpe sthāpayitvā gatavān|
Therefore I left you in Crete, in order that you may set in order remaining things, and establish elders in every city, as I commanded you;
6 tasmād yo naro 'nindita ekasyā yoṣitaḥ svāmī viśvāsinām apacayasyāvādhyatvasya vā doṣeṇāliptānāñca santānānāṁ janako bhavati sa eva yogyaḥ|
if any one is irreproachable, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not in accusation of riot or incorrigible.
7 yato hetoradyakṣeṇeśvarasya gṛhādyakṣeṇevānindanīyena bhavitavyaṁ| tena svecchācāriṇā krodhinā pānāsaktena prahārakeṇa lobhinā vā na bhavitavyaṁ
For it behooves the bishop to be blameless, as the steward of God; not audacious, not irascible, not given to wine, not a controvertist, not fond of filthy lucre;
8 kintvatithisevakena sallokānurāgiṇā vinītena nyāyyena dhārmmikeṇa jitendriyeṇa ca bhavitavyaṁ,
but hospitable, loving the good, prudent, righteous, holy, temperate;
9 upadeśe ca viśvastaṁ vākyaṁ tena dhāritavyaṁ yataḥ sa yad yathārthenopadeśena lokān vinetuṁ vighnakāriṇaśca niruttarān karttuṁ śaknuyāt tad āvaśyakaṁ|
holding that which is according to the teaching of the faithful word, in order that he may be able both to exhort with healthy teaching, and to convict the opposers.
10 yataste bahavo 'vādhyā anarthakavākyavādinaḥ pravañcakāśca santi viśeṣataśchinnatvacāṁ madhye kecit tādṛśā lokāḥ santi|
For many are incorrigible, speaking vain things and egotistical, especially those from the circumcision,
11 teṣāñca vāgrodha āvaśyako yataste kutsitalābhasyāśayānucitāni vākyāni śikṣayanto nikhilaparivārāṇāṁ sumatiṁ nāśayanti|
whose mouths it is necessary to stop; who overturn whole families, teaching those things which it does not behoove, for the sake of disgraceful gain.
12 teṣāṁ svadeśīya eko bhaviṣyadvādī vacanamidamuktavān, yathā, krītīyamānavāḥ sarvve sadā kāpaṭyavādinaḥ| hiṁsrajantusamānāste 'lasāścodarabhārataḥ||
A certain one of them, their own prophet, said, The Cretans are all liars, evil beasts, slow stomachs.
13 sākṣyametat tathyaṁ, ato hetostvaṁ tān gāḍhaṁ bhartsaya te ca yathā viśvāse svasthā bhaveyu
This testimony is true: on account of which cause convict them sharply, in order that they may be sound in the faith,
14 ryihūdīyopākhyāneṣu satyamatabhraṣṭānāṁ mānavānām ājñāsu ca manāṁsi na niveśayeyustathādiśa|
not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men turning away from the truth.
15 śucīnāṁ kṛte sarvvāṇyeva śucīni bhavanti kintu kalaṅkitānām aviśvāsināñca kṛte śuci kimapi na bhavati yatasteṣāṁ buddhayaḥ saṁvedāśca kalaṅkitāḥ santi|
To the pure all things are pure: but to the corrupted and unbelieving there is nothing pure; yea, their mind and their conscience are polluted.
16 īśvarasya jñānaṁ te pratijānanti kintu karmmabhistad anaṅgīkurvvate yataste garhitā anājñāgrāhiṇaḥ sarvvasatkarmmaṇaścāyogyāḥ santi|
They profess to know God, but deny him by their works, being abominable, and unbelieving, and reprobate unto every good work.
