< yohanaḥ 8 >
1 pratyūṣe yīśuḥ panarmandiram āgacchat
But Jesus went to the mount of Olives;
2 tataḥ sarvveṣu lokeṣu tasya samīpa āgateṣu sa upaviśya tān upadeṣṭum ārabhata|
and returned early in the morning into the temple, and all the people came to Him: and He sat down, and taught them.
3 tadā adhyāpakāḥ phirūśinañca vyabhicārakarmmaṇi dhṛtaṁ striyamekām āniya sarvveṣāṁ madhye sthāpayitvā vyāharan
And the scribes and pharisees brought to Him a woman taken in adultery;
4 he guro yoṣitam imāṁ vyabhicārakarmma kurvvāṇāṁ lokā dhṛtavantaḥ|
and setting her in the midst, they said to Him, "This woman was caught in the very act, committing adultery.
5 etādṛśalokāḥ pāṣāṇāghātena hantavyā iti vidhirmūsāvyavasthāgranthe likhitosti kintu bhavān kimādiśati?
Now Moses in the law has commanded us that such women should be stoned, but what sayest Thou?"
6 te tamapavadituṁ parīkṣābhiprāyeṇa vākyamidam apṛcchan kintu sa prahvībhūya bhūmāvaṅgalyā lekhitum ārabhata|
This they said to tempt Him, that they might have something to accuse Him of. But Jesus stooping down, wrote with his finger upon the ground.
7 tatastaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ pṛṣṭa utthāya kathitavān yuṣmākaṁ madhye yo jano niraparādhī saeva prathamam enāṁ pāṣāṇenāhantu|
And as they continued asking Him, He raised himself up and said unto them, "Let him that is without sin among you, first cast a stone at her."
8 paścāt sa punaśca prahvībhūya bhūmau lekhitum ārabhata|
Then He stooped down again and wrote on the ground.
9 tāṁ kathaṁ śrutvā te svasvamanasi prabodhaṁ prāpya jyeṣṭhānukramaṁ ekaikaśaḥ sarvve bahiragacchan tato yīśurekākī tayakttobhavat madhyasthāne daṇḍāyamānā sā yoṣā ca sthitā|
But when they heard his answer, being convicted by their own conscience, they went out one by one, beginning at the elder, even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst of the people.
10 tatpaścād yīśurutthāya tāṁ vanitāṁ vinā kamapyaparaṁ na vilokya pṛṣṭavān he vāme tavāpavādakāḥ kutra? kopi tvāṁ kiṁ na daṇḍayati?
Then Jesus rising up, and seeing none but the woman, said unto her, Where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 sāvadat he maheccha kopi na tadā yīśuravocat nāhamapi daṇḍayāmi yāhi punaḥ pāpaṁ mākārṣīḥ|
And she said, None, Lord. Then said Jesus unto her, Neither do I condemn thee, Go thy way and sin no more.
Then spake Jesus again to them, saying, I am the light of the world; he, that followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 tataḥ phirūśino'vādiṣustvaṁ svārthe svayaṁ sākṣyaṁ dadāsi tasmāt tava sākṣyaṁ grāhyaṁ na bhavati|
The pharisees therefore said to Him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy testimony is not true.
14 tadā yīśuḥ pratyuditavān yadyapi svārthe'haṁ svayaṁ sākṣyaṁ dadāmi tathāpi mat sākṣyaṁ grāhyaṁ yasmād ahaṁ kuta āgatosmi kva yāmi ca tadahaṁ jānāmi kintu kuta āgatosmi kutra gacchāmi ca tad yūyaṁ na jānītha|
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear witness of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I am going; but ye know not whence I come, nor whither I go.
15 yūyaṁ laukikaṁ vicārayatha nāhaṁ kimapi vicārayāmi|
Ye judge according to the flesh, but I judge no man as yet:
16 kintu yadi vicārayāmi tarhi mama vicāro grahītavyo yatoham ekākī nāsmi prerayitā pitā mayā saha vidyate|
though if I should judge, my judgement is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father that sent me.
17 dvayo rjanayoḥ sākṣyaṁ grahaṇīyaṁ bhavatīti yuṣmākaṁ vyavasthāgranthe likhitamasti|
And it is written in your own law, that the testimony of two persons is valid.
18 ahaṁ svārthe svayaṁ sākṣitvaṁ dadāmi yaśca mama tāto māṁ preritavān sopi madarthe sākṣyaṁ dadāti|
Now I am one, who bear witness of myself; and the Father, who sent me, beareth witness of me.
19 tadā te'pṛcchan tava tātaḥ kutra? tato yīśuḥ pratyavādīd yūyaṁ māṁ na jānītha matpitarañca na jānītha yadi mām akṣāsyata tarhi mama tātamapyakṣāsyata|
Then said they unto Him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also.
20 yīśu rmandira upadiśya bhaṇḍāgāre kathā etā akathayat tathāpi taṁ prati kopi karaṁ nodatolayat|
These words spake Jesus in the treasury, when He was teaching in the temple: and no one laid hands on Him, for his hour was not yet come.
21 tataḥ paraṁ yīśuḥ punaruditavān adhunāhaṁ gacchāmi yūyaṁ māṁ gaveṣayiṣyatha kintu nijaiḥ pāpai rmariṣyatha yat sthānam ahaṁ yāsyāmi tat sthānam yūyaṁ yātuṁ na śakṣyatha|
Jesus therefore said unto them again, "I am going away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: where I go ye cannot come."
22 tadā yihūdīyāḥ prāvocan kimayam ātmaghātaṁ kariṣyati? yato yat sthānam ahaṁ yāsyāmi tat sthānam yūyaṁ yātuṁ na śakṣyatha iti vākyaṁ bravīti|
The Jews therefore said, What! will He kill himself; that He says, where I am going, ye cannot come?
23 tato yīśustebhyaḥ kathitavān yūyam adhaḥsthānīyā lokā aham ūrdvvasthānīyaḥ yūyam etajjagatsambandhīyā aham etajjagatsambandhīyo na|
And He said unto them, Ye are from beneath, I am from above: ye are of this world, I am not of this world.
24 tasmāt kathitavān yūyaṁ nijaiḥ pāpai rmariṣyatha yatohaṁ sa pumān iti yadi na viśvasitha tarhi nijaiḥ pāpai rmariṣyatha|
Therefore I said unto you, that ye shall die in your sins; for if ye believe not that I am the Messiah, ye shall die in your sins.
25 tadā te 'pṛcchan kastvaṁ? tato yīśuḥ kathitavān yuṣmākaṁ sannidhau yasya prastāvam ā prathamāt karomi saeva puruṣohaṁ|
Then said they to Him, Who art thou? And Jesus answered them, Even the same that I told you at first.
26 yuṣmāsu mayā bahuvākyaṁ vakttavyaṁ vicārayitavyañca kintu matprerayitā satyavādī tasya samīpe yadahaṁ śrutavān tadeva jagate kathayāmi|
I have many things to say and to judge concerning you: but I only say, He that sent me is true, and I declare to the world those things, which I have heard from Him.
27 kintu sa janake vākyamidaṁ prokttavān iti te nābudhyanta|
But they did not know that He spake unto them of the Father.
28 tato yīśurakathayad yadā manuṣyaputram ūrdvva utthāpayiṣyatha tadāhaṁ sa pumān kevalaḥ svayaṁ kimapi karmma na karomi kintu tāto yathā śikṣayati tadanusāreṇa vākyamidaṁ vadāmīti ca yūyaṁ jñātuṁ śakṣyatha|
Jesus therefore said unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then ye shall know that I am He, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father hath instructed me, I speak these things.
29 matprerayitā pitā mām ekākinaṁ na tyajati sa mayā sārddhaṁ tiṣṭhati yatohaṁ tadabhimataṁ karmma sadā karomi|
And He that sent me, is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.
30 tadā tasyaitāni vākyāni śrutvā bahuvastāsmin vyaśvasan|
As He spake these words many believed on Him.
31 ye yihūdīyā vyaśvasan yīśustebhyo'kathayat
Therefore said Jesus to the Jews that believed on Him, If ye continue in my word, ye are indeed my disciples.
32 mama vākye yadi yūyam āsthāṁ kurutha tarhi mama śiṣyā bhūtvā satyatvaṁ jñāsyatha tataḥ satyatayā yuṣmākaṁ mokṣo bhaviṣyati|
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 tadā te pratyavādiṣuḥ vayam ibrāhīmo vaṁśaḥ kadāpi kasyāpi dāsā na jātāstarhi yuṣmākaṁ muktti rbhaviṣyatīti vākyaṁ kathaṁ bravīṣi?
They answered Him, We are the seed of Abraham, and never were slaves to any one, how then dost thou say, Ye shall be made free?
34 tadā yīśuḥ pratyavadad yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthataraṁ vadāmi yaḥ pāpaṁ karoti sa pāpasya dāsaḥ|
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily I say unto you, whosoever maketh a practice of sin, is the servant of sin.
35 dāsaśca nirantaraṁ niveśane na tiṣṭhati kintu putro nirantaraṁ tiṣṭhati| (aiōn )
Now the servant does not continue always in the family: but the Son abideth always. (aiōn )
36 ataḥ putro yadi yuṣmān mocayati tarhi nitāntameva mukttā bhaviṣyatha|
If therefore the Son make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 yuyam ibrāhīmo vaṁśa ityahaṁ jānāmi kintu mama kathā yuṣmākam antaḥkaraṇeṣu sthānaṁ na prāpnuvanti tasmāddheto rmāṁ hantum īhadhve|
I know that ye are the seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 ahaṁ svapituḥ samīpe yadapaśyaṁ tadeva kathayāmi tathā yūyamapi svapituḥ samīpe yadapaśyata tadeva kurudhve|
I speak that which I have seen with my Father, and ye do what ye have seen with your father.
39 tadā te pratyavocan ibrāhīm asmākaṁ pitā tato yīśurakathayad yadi yūyam ibrāhīmaḥ santānā abhaviṣyata tarhi ibrāhīma ācāraṇavad ācariṣyata|
They answered Him, Abraham is our father, Jesus replied, If ye were the children of Abraham, ye would do the works of Abraham:
40 īśvarasya mukhāt satyaṁ vākyaṁ śrutvā yuṣmān jñāpayāmi yohaṁ taṁ māṁ hantuṁ ceṣṭadhve ibrāhīm etādṛśaṁ karmma na cakāra|
but now ye seek to kill me, who have told you the truth which I have heard from God: Abraham did not thus.
41 yūyaṁ svasvapituḥ karmmāṇi kurutha tadā tairukttaṁ na vayaṁ jārajātā asmākam ekaeva pitāsti sa eveśvaraḥ
But ye do the works of your father. Then said they unto Him, We are not born of fornication, we have one Father, even God.
42 tato yīśunā kathitam īśvaro yadi yuṣmākaṁ tātobhaviṣyat tarhi yūyaṁ mayi premākariṣyata yatoham īśvarānnirgatyāgatosmi svato nāgatohaṁ sa māṁ prāhiṇot|
Jesus said unto them, If God were your father, ye would love me: for I came forth, and do come, from God; neither came I of myself, but He sent me.
43 yūyaṁ mama vākyamidaṁ na budhyadhve kutaḥ? yato yūyaṁ mamopadeśaṁ soḍhuṁ na śaknutha|
And why do ye not understand my language, but because ye cannot bear my doctrine?
44 yūyaṁ śaitān pituḥ santānā etasmād yuṣmākaṁ piturabhilāṣaṁ pūrayatha sa ā prathamāt naraghātī tadantaḥ satyatvasya leśopi nāsti kāraṇādataḥ sa satyatāyāṁ nātiṣṭhat sa yadā mṛṣā kathayati tadā nijasvabhāvānusāreṇaiva kathayati yato sa mṛṣābhāṣī mṛṣotpādakaśca|
Ye are of your father the devil, and are bent upon doing the lusts of your father: he was a murderer from the beginning, and continued not in the truth: for there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh like himself, for he is a liar, and the father of such.
45 ahaṁ tathyavākyaṁ vadāmi kāraṇādasmād yūyaṁ māṁ na pratītha|
And because I say the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convicteth me of sin?
46 mayi pāpamastīti pramāṇaṁ yuṣmākaṁ ko dātuṁ śaknoti? yadyahaṁ tathyavākyaṁ vadāmi tarhi kuto māṁ na pratitha?
And if I speak truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 yaḥ kaścana īśvarīyo lokaḥ sa īśvarīyakathāyāṁ mano nidhatte yūyam īśvarīyalokā na bhavatha tannidānāt tatra na manāṁsi nidhadve|
He, that is of God, receiveth the words of God; but ye therefore receive them not, because ye are not of God.
48 tadā yihūdīyāḥ pratyavādiṣuḥ tvamekaḥ śomiroṇīyo bhūtagrastaśca vayaṁ kimidaṁ bhadraṁ nāvādiṣma?
The Jews therefore answered and said unto Him. Do we not rightly say, that thou art a Samaritan, and art possessed by a demon?
49 tato yīśuḥ pratyavādīt nāhaṁ bhūtagrastaḥ kintu nijatātaṁ sammanye tasmād yūyaṁ mām apamanyadhve|
Jesus answered I am not possessed by a demon, but I honour my Father, though ye dishonour me.
50 ahaṁ svasukhyātiṁ na ceṣṭe kintu ceṣṭitā vicārayitā cāpara eka āste|
And I seek not my own glory; there is One that seeketh it, and judgeth.
51 ahaṁ yuṣmabhyam atīva yathārthaṁ kathayāmi yo naro madīyaṁ vācaṁ manyate sa kadācana nidhanaṁ na drakṣyati| (aiōn )
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If any one keep my word, he shall never see death. (aiōn )
52 yihūdīyāstamavadan tvaṁ bhūtagrasta itīdānīm avaiṣma| ibrāhīm bhaviṣyadvādinañca sarvve mṛtāḥ kintu tvaṁ bhāṣase yo naro mama bhāratīṁ gṛhlāti sa jātu nidhānāsvādaṁ na lapsyate| (aiōn )
The Jews therefore said unto Him, Now we are sure that thou art possessed by a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets too; and thou sayest, If any one keep my word, he shall never taste of death: art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? (aiōn )
53 tarhi tvaṁ kim asmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣād ibrāhīmopi mahān? yasmāt sopi mṛtaḥ bhaviṣyadvādinopi mṛtāḥ tvaṁ svaṁ kaṁ pumāṁsaṁ manuṣe?
and the prophets are dead: whom dost thou pretend to be?
54 yīśuḥ pratyavocad yadyahaṁ svaṁ svayaṁ sammanye tarhi mama tat sammananaṁ kimapi na kintu mama tāto yaṁ yūyaṁ svīyam īśvaraṁ bhāṣadhve saeva māṁ sammanute|
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honor is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom ye say that He is your God.
55 yūyaṁ taṁ nāvagacchatha kintvahaṁ tamavagacchāmi taṁ nāvagacchāmīti vākyaṁ yadi vadāmi tarhi yūyamiva mṛṣābhāṣī bhavāmi kintvahaṁ tamavagacchāmi tadākṣāmapi gṛhlāmi|
And yet ye know him not; but I know Him: and if I should say, That I know Him not, I shall be like you, a liar: but I know Him, and obey his word.
56 yuṣmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣa ibrāhīm mama samayaṁ draṣṭum atīvāvāñchat tannirīkṣyānandacca|
Your father Abraham longed to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 tadā yihūdīyā apṛcchan tava vayaḥ pañcāśadvatsarā na tvaṁ kim ibrāhīmam adrākṣīḥ?
Then said the Jews unto Him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 yīśuḥ pratyavādīd yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthataraṁ vadāmi ibrāhīmo janmanaḥ pūrvvakālamārabhyāhaṁ vidye|
Jesus said unto them, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 tadā te pāṣāṇān uttolya tamāhantum udayacchan kintu yīśu rgupto mantirād bahirgatya teṣāṁ madhyena prasthitavān|
Therefore they took up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus concealed Himself, and went out of the temple, through the midst of them, and so passed on.
