< 1 thiṣalanīkinaḥ 5 >

1 he bhrātaraḥ, kālān samayāṁścādhi yuṣmān prati mama likhanaṁ niṣprayojanaṁ,
But as to the times and the moments, there is no need, friends, for anyone to write to you.
2 yato rātrau yādṛk taskarastādṛk prabho rdinam upasthāsyatīti yūyaṁ svayameva samyag jānītha|
You yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come just as a thief comes in the night.
3 śānti rnirvvinghatvañca vidyata iti yadā mānavā vadiṣyanti tadā prasavavedanā yadvad garbbhinīm upatiṣṭhati tadvad akasmād vināśastān upasthāsyati tairuddhāro na lapsyate|
When people are saying ‘All is quiet and safe,’ it is then that, like birth pains on a pregnant woman, ruin comes suddenly upon them, and there will be no escape!
4 kintu he bhrātaraḥ, yūyam andhakāreṇāvṛtā na bhavatha tasmāt taddinaṁ taskara iva yuṣmān na prāpsyati|
You, however, friends, are not in darkness, that the daylight should take you by surprise as if you were thieves.
5 sarvve yūyaṁ dīpteḥ santānā divāyāśca santānā bhavatha vayaṁ niśāvaṁśāstimiravaṁśā vā na bhavāmaḥ|
For you all are children of light and children of the day. We have nothing to do with night, or darkness.
6 ato 'pare yathā nidrāgatāḥ santi tadvad asmābhi rna bhavitavyaṁ kintu jāgaritavyaṁ sacetanaiśca bhavitavyaṁ|
Therefore let us not sleep as others do. No, let us be watchful and self-controlled.
7 ye nidrānti te niśāyāmeva nidrānti te ca mattā bhavanti te rajanyāmeva mattā bhavanti|
It is at night that people sleep, and at night that drunkards get drunk.
8 kintu vayaṁ divasasya vaṁśā bhavāmaḥ; ato 'smābhi rvakṣasi pratyayapremarūpaṁ kavacaṁ śirasi ca paritrāṇāśārūpaṁ śirastraṁ paridhāya sacetanai rbhavitavyaṁ|
But let us, who belong to the day, control ourselves, and put on faith and love as a breast plate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
9 yata īśvaro'smān krodhe na niyujyāsmākaṁ prabhunā yīśukhrīṣṭena paritrāṇasyādhikāre niyuktavān,
For God destined us, not for wrath, but to win salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us,
10 jāgrato nidrāgatā vā vayaṁ yat tena prabhunā saha jīvāmastadarthaṁ so'smākaṁ kṛte prāṇān tyaktavān|
that, whether we are still watching or have fallen asleep, we may live with him.
11 ataeva yūyaṁ yadvat kurutha tadvat parasparaṁ sāntvayata susthirīkurudhvañca|
Therefore encourage one another, and try to build up one another’s characters, as indeed you are doing.
12 he bhrātaraḥ, yuṣmākaṁ madhye ye janāḥ pariśramaṁ kurvvanti prabho rnāmnā yuṣmān adhitiṣṭhantyupadiśanti ca tān yūyaṁ sammanyadhvaṁ|
We beg you, friends, to value those who toil among you, and are your leaders in the Lord’s service, and give you counsel.
13 svakarmmahetunā ca premnā tān atīvādṛyadhvamiti mama prārthanā, yūyaṁ parasparaṁ nirvvirodhā bhavata|
Hold them in the very greatest esteem and affection for the sake of their work. Live at peace with one another.
14 he bhrātaraḥ, yuṣmān vinayāmahe yūyam avihitācāriṇo lokān bhartsayadhvaṁ, kṣudramanasaḥ sāntvayata, durbbalān upakuruta, sarvvān prati sahiṣṇavo bhavata ca|
We entreat you also, friends – warn the disorderly, comfort the faint-hearted, give a helping hand to the weak, and be patient with everyone.
15 aparaṁ kamapi pratyaniṣṭasya phalam aniṣṭaṁ kenāpi yanna kriyeta tadarthaṁ sāvadhānā bhavata, kintu parasparaṁ sarvvān mānavāṁśca prati nityaṁ hitācāriṇo bhavata|
Take care that none of you ever pays back wrong for wrong, but always follow the kindest course with one another and with everyone.
16 sarvvadānandata|
Always be joyful;
17 nirantaraṁ prārthanāṁ kurudhvaṁ|
never cease to pray;
18 sarvvaviṣaye kṛtajñatāṁ svīkurudhvaṁ yata etadeva khrīṣṭayīśunā yuṣmān prati prakāśitam īśvarābhimataṁ|
under all circumstances give thanks to God. For this is his will for you as made known in Christ Jesus.
19 pavitram ātmānaṁ na nirvvāpayata|
Do not quench the Spirit;
20 īśvarīyādeśaṁ nāvajānīta|
do not make light of preaching.
21 sarvvāṇi parīkṣya yad bhadraṁ tadeva dhārayata|
Bring everything to the test; cling to what is good;
22 yat kimapi pāparūpaṁ bhavati tasmād dūraṁ tiṣṭhata|
shun every form of evil.
23 śāntidāyaka īśvaraḥ svayaṁ yuṣmān sampūrṇatvena pavitrān karotu, aparam asmatprabho ryīśukhrīṣṭasyāgamanaṁ yāvad yuṣmākam ātmānaḥ prāṇāḥ śarīrāṇi ca nikhilāni nirddoṣatvena rakṣyantāṁ|
May God himself, the giver of peace, make you altogether holy; and may your spirits, souls, and bodies be kept altogether faultless until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 yo yuṣmān āhvayati sa viśvasanīyo'taḥ sa tat sādhayiṣyati|
He who calls you will not fail you; he will complete his work.
25 he bhrātaraḥ, asmākaṁ kṛte prārthanāṁ kurudhvaṁ|
Friends, pray for us.
26 pavitracumbanena sarvvān bhrātṛn prati satkurudhvaṁ|
Greet all the Lord’s followers with a sacred kiss.
27 patramidaṁ sarvveṣāṁ pavitrāṇāṁ bhrātṛṇāṁ śrutigocare yuṣmābhiḥ paṭhyatāmiti prabho rnāmnā yuṣmān śapayāmi|
I order you in the Lord’s name to have this letter read to all the brethren.
28 asmākaṁ prabho ryīśukhrīṣṭasyānugrate yuṣmāsu bhūyāt| āmen|
May the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
