1 atha tU sindhupAraM gatvA giderIyapradeza upatasthuH|
And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 naukAto nirgatamAtrAd apavitrabhUtagrasta ekaH zmazAnAdetya taM sAkSAc cakAra|
And when He was come out of the ship, immediately there met Him from the tombs,
3 sa zmazAne'vAtsIt kopi taM zRGkhalena badvvA sthApayituM nAzaknot|
a man with an impure spirit, who kept among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains:
4 janairvAraM nigaDaiH zRGkhalaizca sa baddhopi zRGkhalAnyAkRSya mocitavAn nigaDAni ca bhaMktvA khaNDaM khaNDaM kRtavAn kopi taM vazIkarttuM na zazaka|
for he had often been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been pulled asunder by him, and the fetters broken; and no man could tame him:
5 divAnizaM sadA parvvataM zmazAnaJca bhramitvA cItzabdaM kRtavAn grAvabhizca svayaM svaM kRtavAn|
and he was always night and day upon the hills and among the sepulchres bawling, and gashing himself with stones.
6 sa yIzuM dUrAt pazyanneva dhAvan taM praNanAma ucairuvaMzcovAca,
But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped Him,
7 he sarvvoparisthezvaraputra yIzo bhavatA saha me kaH sambandhaH? ahaM tvAmIzvareNa zApaye mAM mA yAtaya|
and crying out with a loud voice said, Jesus thou Son of the most high God, what have I to do with thee? I adjure thee by God, that thou wouldst not torment me:
8 yato yIzustaM kathitavAn re apavitrabhUta, asmAnnarAd bahirnirgaccha|
(for He said to him, Thou impure spirit, come out of the man.)
9 atha sa taM pRSTavAn kinte nAma? tena pratyuktaM vayamaneke 'smastato'smannAma bAhinI|
And He asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 tatosmAn dezAnna preSayeti te taM prArthayanta|
And he earnestly intreated Him, that He would not send them out of that country.
11 tadAnIM parvvataM nikaSA bRhan varAhavrajazcarannAsIt|
Now there was a great herd of swine feeding upon the mountains:
12 tasmAd bhUtA vinayena jagaduH, amuM varAhavrajam Azrayitum asmAn prahiNu|
and all the demons intreated Him, saying, Send us to the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 yIzunAnujJAtAste'pavitrabhUtA bahirniryAya varAhavrajaM prAvizan tataH sarvve varAhA vastutastu prAyodvisahasrasaMGkhyakAH kaTakena mahAjavAd dhAvantaH sindhau prANAn jahuH|
And immediately Jesus permitted them: and the impure spirits went out of the man, and entered into the swine; and the herd (which were about two thousand, ) ran violently down a precipice into the sea, and were suffocated.
14 tasmAd varAhapAlakAH palAyamAnAH pure grAme ca tadvArttaM kathayAJcakruH| tadA lokA ghaTitaM tatkAryyaM draSTuM bahirjagmuH
And they that were feeding the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what was done:
15 yIzoH sannidhiM gatvA taM bhUtagrastam arthAd bAhinIbhUtagrastaM naraM savastraM sacetanaM samupaviSTaJca dRSTvA bibhyuH|
and they come to Jesus, and see the demoniac, who had been possessed by the legion, sitting and clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
16 tato dRSTatatkAryyalokAstasya bhUtagrastanarasya varAhavrajasyApi tAM dhaTanAM varNayAmAsuH|
And when those that saw it told them what had happened to the demoniac,
17 tataste svasImAto bahirgantuM yIzuM vinetumArebhire|
and concerning the swine, they intreated Him to depart from their borders.
18 atha tasya naukArohaNakAle sa bhUtamukto nA yIzunA saha sthAtuM prArthayate;
And as He went into the ship, the demoniac intreated Him that he might be with Him:
19 kintu sa tamananumatya kathitavAn tvaM nijAtmIyAnAM samIpaM gRhaJca gaccha prabhustvayi kRpAM kRtvA yAni karmmANi kRtavAn tAni tAn jJApaya|
but Jesus did not permit him; but saith to him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee:
20 ataH sa prasthAya yIzunA kRtaM tatsarvvAzcaryyaM karmma dikApalideze pracArayituM prArabdhavAn tataH sarvve lokA AzcaryyaM menire|
and he departed, and published in Decapolis, how great things Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.
21 anantaraM yIzau nAvA punaranyapAra uttIrNe sindhutaTe ca tiSThati sati tatsamIpe bahulokAnAM samAgamo'bhUt|
And when Jesus passed over again in the ship to the other side, a great multitude was gathered unto Him, nigh unto the sea.
22 aparaM yAyIr nAmnA kazcid bhajanagRhasyAdhipa Agatya taM dRSTvaiva caraNayoH patitvA bahu nivedya kathitavAn;
And behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus; and as soon as he saw Him, he fell at his feet,
23 mama kanyA mRtaprAyAbhUd ato bhavAnetya tadArogyAya tasyA gAtre hastam arpayatu tenaiva sA jIviSyati|
and earnestly intreated Him, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death, I beseech thee that thou wouldst come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.
24 tadA yIzustena saha calitaH kintu tatpazcAd bahulokAzcalitvA tAdgAtre patitAH|
So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him, and pressed about Him.
25 atha dvAdazavarSANi pradararogeNa
And a woman who had been in a flux twelve years,
26 zIrNA cikitsakAnAM nAnAcikitsAbhizca duHkhaM bhuktavatI ca sarvvasvaM vyayitvApi nArogyaM prAptA ca punarapi pIDitAsIcca
and had suffered a great deal from many physicians, and spent all that she had, and received no benefit, but rather grew worse,
27 yA strI sA yIzo rvArttAM prApya manasAkathayat yadyahaM tasya vastramAtra spraSTuM labheyaM tadA rogahInA bhaviSyAmi|
when she heard of Jesus, came behind Him in the croud, and touched his garment; for she said,
28 atohetoH sA lokAraNyamadhye tatpazcAdAgatya tasya vastraM pasparza|
If I can but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.
29 tenaiva tatkSaNaM tasyA raktasrotaH zuSkaM svayaM tasmAd rogAnmuktA ityapi dehe'nubhUtA|
And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt within herself that she was healed of the disorder.
30 atha svasmAt zakti rnirgatA yIzuretanmanasA jJAtvA lokanivahaM prati mukhaM vyAvRtya pRSTavAn kena madvastraM spRSTaM?
And immediately Jesus, knowing in Himself that power was gone out of Him, turned about in the croud and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 tatastasya ziSyA UcuH bhavato vapuSi lokAH saMgharSanti tad dRSTvA kena madvastraM spRSTamiti kutaH kathayati?
And his disciples said unto Him, Thou seest the multitude crouding about thee, and dost thou ask, Who touched me?
32 kintu kena tat karmma kRtaM tad draSTuM yIzuzcaturdizo dRSTavAn|
and He looked round about to see who had done it.
33 tataH sA strI bhItA kampitA ca satI svasyA rukpratikriyA jAteti jJAtvAgatya tatsammukhe patitvA sarvvavRttAntaM satyaM tasmai kathayAmAsa|
But the woman being afraid and trembling, as knowing what had been done in her, came and prostrated herself to Him, and told Him all the truth:
34 tadAnIM yIzustAM gaditavAn, he kanye tava pratItistvAm arogAmakarot tvaM kSemeNa vraja svarogAnmuktA ca tiSTha|
and He said to her, Daughter, thy faith has saved thee; go in peace, and be healed of thy disorder.
35 itivAkyavadanakAle bhajanagRhAdhipasya nivezanAl lokA etyAdhipaM babhASire tava kanyA mRtA tasmAd guruM punaH kutaH kliznAsi?
While He was yet speaking, there came some from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying, Thy daughter is dead, why dost thou trouble the Master any more?
36 kintu yIzustad vAkyaM zrutvaiva bhajanagRhAdhipaM gaditavAn mA bhaiSIH kevalaM vizvAsihi|
But Jesus hearing the word that was spoken, immediately saith to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe:
37 atha pitaro yAkUb tadbhrAtA yohan ca etAn vinA kamapi svapazcAd yAtuM nAnvamanyata|
and He suffered none to go along with Him, but Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
38 tasya bhajanagRhAdhipasya nivezanasamIpam Agatya kalahaM bahurodanaM vilApaJca kurvvato lokAn dadarza|
And He cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth a tumult, people weeping and lamenting greatly:
39 tasmAn nivezanaM pravizya proktavAn yUyaM kuta itthaM kalahaM rodanaJca kurutha? kanyA na mRtA nidrAti|
and when He was come in, He saith unto them, Why do ye take on thus and weep? the child is not dead, but asleep.
40 tasmAtte tamupajahasuH kintu yIzuH sarvvAna bahiSkRtya kanyAyAH pitarau svasaGginazca gRhItvA yatra kanyAsIt tat sthAnaM praviSTavAn|
And they laughed at Him: but when He had turned them all out, He taketh the father, and the mother of the child, and those three that were with Him, and goes in where the child was laid:
41 atha sa tasyAH kanyAyA hastau dhRtvA tAM babhASe TAlIthA kUmI, arthato he kanye tvamuttiSTha ityAjJApayAmi|
and taking hold of her hand, He saith unto her, Talitha, cumi, which is, being interpreted, Damsel, (I say unto thee) arise:
42 tunaiva tatkSaNaM sA dvAdazavarSavayaskA kanyA potthAya calitumArebhe, itaH sarvve mahAvismayaM gatAH|
and immediately the damsel rose up and walked; for she was twelve years old; and they were struck with great astonishment.
43 tata etasyai kiJcit khAdyaM datteti kathayitvA etatkarmma kamapi na jJApayateti dRDhamAdiSTavAn|
And He strictly charged them, that no one should know it: and bid them give her something to eat.
