1 anantaraM yIzuH punarapi dRSTAntEna tAn avAdIt,
And having responded, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying,
2 svargIyarAjyam EtAdRzasya nRpatEH samaM, yO nija putraM vivAhayan sarvvAn nimantritAn AnEtuM dAsEyAn prahitavAn,
The kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a king who made a wedding for his son.
3 kintu tE samAgantuM nESTavantaH|
And he sent forth his bondmen to call those who were invited to the wedding festivities, and they did not want to come.
4 tatO rAjA punarapi dAsAnanyAn ityuktvA prESayAmAsa, nimantritAn vadata, pazyata, mama bhEjyamAsAditamAstE, nijavTaSAdipuSTajantUn mArayitvA sarvvaM khAdyadravyamAsAditavAn, yUyaM vivAhamAgacchata|
Again he sent forth other bondmen, saying, Speak to those who were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and my fatlings have been killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding festivities.
5 tathapi tE tucchIkRtya kEcit nijakSEtraM kEcid vANijyaM prati svasvamArgENa calitavantaH|
But having disregarded, they departed, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,
6 anyE lOkAstasya dAsEyAn dhRtvA daurAtmyaM vyavahRtya tAnavadhiSuH|
and the others having seized his bondmen, abused and killed them.
7 anantaraM sa nRpatistAM vArttAM zrutvA krudhyan sainyAni prahitya tAn ghAtakAn hatvA tESAM nagaraM dAhayAmAsa|
But having heard that, the king was angry, and having sent forth his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
8 tataH sa nijadAsEyAn babhASE, vivAhIyaM bhOjyamAsAditamAstE, kintu nimantritA janA ayOgyAH|
Then he says to his bondmen, The wedding is indeed ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
9 tasmAd yUyaM rAjamArgaM gatvA yAvatO manujAn pazyata, tAvataEva vivAhIyabhOjyAya nimantrayata|
Go ye therefore to the crossings of the ways, and as many as ye may find, call to the wedding festivities.
10 tadA tE dAsEyA rAjamArgaM gatvA bhadrAn abhadrAn vA yAvatO janAn dadRzuH, tAvataEva saMgRhyAnayan; tatO'bhyAgatamanujai rvivAhagRham apUryyata|
And those bondmen having departed into the roads, they gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good. And the wedding was filled with those who were dining.
11 tadAnIM sa rAjA sarvvAnabhyAgatAn draSTum abhyantaramAgatavAn; tadA tatra vivAhIyavasanahInamEkaM janaM vIkSya taM jagAd,
But when the king came in to see those who were dining, he saw there a man who was not clothed with a wedding garment.
12 hE mitra, tvaM vivAhIyavasanaM vinA kathamatra praviSTavAn? tEna sa niruttarO babhUva|
And he says to him, Friend, how did thou come in here not having a wedding garment? But he was speechless.
13 tadA rAjA nijAnucarAn avadat, Etasya karacaraNAn baddhA yatra rOdanaM dantairdantagharSaNanjca bhavati, tatra vahirbhUtatamisrE taM nikSipata|
Then the king said to the helpers, After binding him hands and feet, take him away and cast him out into the outer darkness. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
14 itthaM bahava AhUtA alpE manObhimatAH|
For many are called, but few chosen.
15 anantaraM phirUzinaH pragatya yathA saMlApEna tam unmAthE pAtayEyustathA mantrayitvA
Then the Pharisees having departed, they took counsel how they might trap him in his talk.
16 hErOdIyamanujaiH sAkaM nijaziSyagaNEna taM prati kathayAmAsuH, hE gurO, bhavAn satyaH satyamIzvarIyamArgamupadizati, kamapi mAnuSaM nAnurudhyatE, kamapi nApEkSatE ca, tad vayaM jAnImaH|
And they send out their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou are true, and teach the way of God in truth, and it is not a concern to thee about a man, for thou look not to the personage of men.
17 ataH kaisarabhUpAya karO'smAkaM dAtavyO na vA? atra bhavatA kiM budhyatE? tad asmAn vadatu|
Tell us therefore, what does it seem to thee? Is it permitted to give tribute to Caesar or not?
18 tatO yIzustESAM khalatAM vijnjAya kathitavAn, rE kapaTinaH yuyaM kutO mAM parikSadhvE?
But Jesus having known their wickedness, said, Why do ye tempt me, ye hypocrites?
19 tatkaradAnasya mudrAM mAM darzayata| tadAnIM taistasya samIpaM mudrAcaturthabhAga AnItE
Exhibit to me the tribute money. And they brought to him a denarius.
20 sa tAn papraccha, atra kasyEyaM mUrtti rnAma cAstE? tE jagaduH, kaisarabhUpasya|
And he says to them, Whose is this image and inscription?
21 tataH sa uktavAna, kaisarasya yat tat kaisarAya datta, Izvarasya yat tad IzvarAya datta|
They say to him, Caesar's. Then he says to them, Therefore, render the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.
22 iti vAkyaM nizamya tE vismayaM vijnjAya taM vihAya calitavantaH|
And when they heard it, they marveled. And having left him, they departed.
23 tasminnahani sidUkinO'rthAt zmazAnAt nOtthAsyantIti vAkyaM yE vadanti, tE yIzErantikam Agatya papracchuH,
On that day Sadducees came to him, those who claim to be no resurrection. And they questioned him, saying,
24 hE gurO, kazcinmanujazcEt niHsantAnaH san prANAn tyajati, tarhi tasya bhrAtA tasya jAyAM vyuhya bhrAtuH santAnam utpAdayiSyatIti mUsA AdiSTavAn|
Teacher, Moses said, If some man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
25 kintvasmAkamatra kE'pi janAH saptasahOdarA Asan, tESAM jyESTha EkAM kanyAM vyavahAt, aparaM prANatyAgakAlE svayaM niHsantAnaH san tAM striyaM svabhrAtari samarpitavAn,
Now there were with us seven brothers. And the first having married perished. And having no seed left his wife to his brother.
26 tatO dvitIyAdisaptamAntAzca tathaiva cakruH|
Likewise also the second, and the third, until the seventh.
27 zESE sApI nArI mamAra|
And last of all, the woman also died.
28 mRtAnAm utthAnasamayE tESAM saptAnAM madhyE sA nArI kasya bhAryyA bhaviSyati? yasmAt sarvvaEva tAM vyavahan|
In the resurrection therefore, which of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her.
29 tatO yIzuH pratyavAdIt, yUyaM dharmmapustakam IzvarIyAM zaktinjca na vijnjAya bhrAntimantaH|
But having answered, Jesus said to them, Ye are led astray, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 utthAnaprAptA lOkA na vivahanti, na ca vAcA dIyantE, kintvIzvarasya svargasthadUtAnAM sadRzA bhavanti|
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as agents of God in heaven.
31 aparaM mRtAnAmutthAnamadhi yuSmAn pratIyamIzvarOktiH,
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,
32 "ahamibrAhIma Izvara ishAka IzvarO yAkUba Izvara" iti kiM yuSmAbhi rnApAThi? kintvIzvarO jIvatAm Izvara: , sa mRtAnAmIzvarO nahi|
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not God of the dead, but of the living.
33 iti zrutvA sarvvE lOkAstasyOpadEzAd vismayaM gatAH|
And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34 anantaraM sidUkinAm niruttaratvavArtAM nizamya phirUzina Ekatra militavantaH,
But the Pharisees, having heard that he silenced the Sadducees, they came together in the same place.
35 tESAmEkO vyavasthApakO yIzuM parIkSituM papaccha,
And one of them, a lawyer, questioned, trying him, and saying,
36 hE gurO vyavasthAzAstramadhyE kAjnjA zrESThA?
Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 tatO yIzuruvAca, tvaM sarvvAntaHkaraNaiH sarvvaprANaiH sarvvacittaizca sAkaM prabhau paramEzvarE prIyasva,
And Jesus said to him, Thou shall love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
38 ESA prathamamahAjnjA| tasyAH sadRzI dvitIyAjnjaiSA,
This is the first and great commandment.
39 tava samIpavAsini svAtmanIva prEma kuru|
And the second is like it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.
40 anayO rdvayOrAjnjayOH kRtsnavyavasthAyA bhaviSyadvaktRgranthasya ca bhArastiSThati|
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
41 anantaraM phirUzinAm Ekatra sthitikAlE yIzustAn papraccha,
Now the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus interrogated them, saying,
42 khrISTamadhi yuSmAkaM kIdRgbOdhO jAyatE? sa kasya santAnaH? tatastE pratyavadan, dAyUdaH santAnaH|
What does it seem to you about the Christ? Whose son is he? They say to him, Of David.
43 tadA sa uktavAn, tarhi dAyUd katham AtmAdhiSThAnEna taM prabhuM vadati?
He says to them, How then does David in Spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 yathA mama prabhumidaM vAkyamavadat paramEzvaraH| tavArIn pAdapIThaM tE yAvannahi karOmyahaM| tAvat kAlaM madIyE tvaM dakSapArzva upAviza| atO yadi dAyUd taM prabhuM vadati, rtiha sa kathaM tasya santAnO bhavati?
The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand until I place thine enemies a footstool of thy feet?
45 tadAnIM tESAM kOpi tadvAkyasya kimapyuttaraM dAtuM nAzaknOt;
If David therefore calls him Lord, how is he his son?
46 taddinamArabhya taM kimapi vAkyaM praSTuM kasyApi sAhasO nAbhavat|
And no man was able to answer him a word, nor did any man from that day dare to question him any more.
