1 tataH paraM sa lOkAnAM karNagOcarE tAn sarvvAn upadEzAn samApya yadA kapharnAhUmpuraM pravizati
When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
2 tadA zatasEnApatEH priyadAsa EkO mRtakalpaH pIPita AsIt|
There a centurion's servant, who was highly regarded by his master, was sick and about to die.
3 ataH sEnApati ryIzO rvArttAM nizamya dAsasyArOgyakaraNAya tasyAgamanArthaM vinayakaraNAya yihUdIyAn kiyataH prAcaH prESayAmAsa|
The centurion heard about Jesus and sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.
4 tE yIzOrantikaM gatvA vinayAtizayaM vaktumArEbhirE, sa sEnApati rbhavatOnugrahaM prAptum arhati|
When they came to Jesus, they earnestly pleaded with him, saying, “This man is worthy to have yoʋ do this for him,
5 yataH sOsmajjAtIyESu lOkESu prIyatE tathAsmatkRtE bhajanagEhaM nirmmitavAn|
for he loves our nation and built our synagogue for us.”
6 tasmAd yIzustaiH saha gatvA nivEzanasya samIpaM prApa, tadA sa zatasEnApati rvakSyamANavAkyaM taM vaktuM bandhUn prAhiNOt| hE prabhO svayaM zramO na karttavyO yad bhavatA madgEhamadhyE pAdArpaNaM kriyEta tadapyahaM nArhAmi,
So Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yoʋrself, for I am not worthy to have yoʋ enter under my roof;
7 kinjcAhaM bhavatsamIpaM yAtumapi nAtmAnaM yOgyaM buddhavAn, tatO bhavAn vAkyamAtraM vadatu tEnaiva mama dAsaH svasthO bhaviSyati|
therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to yoʋ. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
8 yasmAd ahaM parAdhInOpi mamAdhInA yAH sEnAH santi tAsAm EkajanaM prati yAhIti mayA prOktE sa yAti; tadanyaM prati AyAhIti prOktE sa AyAti; tathA nijadAsaM prati Etat kurvviti prOktE sa tadEva karOti|
For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
9 yIzuridaM vAkyaM zrutvA vismayaM yayau, mukhaM parAvartya pazcAdvarttinO lOkAn babhASE ca, yuSmAnahaM vadAmi isrAyElO vaMzamadhyEpi vizvAsamIdRzaM na prApnavaM|
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at the centurion. And turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
10 tatastE prESitA gRhaM gatvA taM pIPitaM dAsaM svasthaM dadRzuH|
Then the men the centurion had sent returned to the house and found that the servant who had been sick was well.
11 parE'hani sa nAyInAkhyaM nagaraM jagAma tasyAnEkE ziSyA anyE ca lOkAstEna sArddhaM yayuH|
Soon afterward Jesus went to a town called Nain, and many of his disciples went with him, along with a large crowd.
12 tESu tannagarasya dvArasannidhiM prAptESu kiyantO lOkA EkaM mRtamanujaM vahantO nagarasya bahiryAnti, sa tanmAturEkaputrastanmAtA ca vidhavA; tayA sArddhaM tannagarIyA bahavO lOkA Asan|
As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the one and only son of his mother (who was a widow). And a large crowd from the town was with her.
13 prabhustAM vilOkya sAnukampaH kathayAmAsa, mA rOdIH| sa samIpamitvA khaTvAM pasparza tasmAd vAhakAH sthagitAstamyuH;
When the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
14 tadA sa uvAca hE yuvamanuSya tvamuttiSTha, tvAmaham AjnjApayAmi|
Then he came up and touched the bier, and those who were carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to yoʋ, arise!”
15 tasmAt sa mRtO janastatkSaNamutthAya kathAM prakathitaH; tatO yIzustasya mAtari taM samarpayAmAsa|
So the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 tasmAt sarvvE lOkAH zazagkirE; EkO mahAbhaviSyadvAdI madhyE'smAkam samudait, Izvarazca svalOkAnanvagRhlAt kathAmimAM kathayitvA IzvaraM dhanyaM jagaduH|
Then all the people were filled with awe and began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us,” and, “God has visited his people.”
17 tataH paraM samastaM yihUdAdEzaM tasya caturdiksthadEzanjca tasyaitatkIrtti rvyAnazE|
This news about Jesus then spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.
18 tataH paraM yOhanaH ziSyESu taM tadvRttAntaM jnjApitavatsu
John's disciples told him about all these things.
19 sa svaziSyANAM dvau janAvAhUya yIzuM prati vakSyamANaM vAkyaM vaktuM prESayAmAsa, yasyAgamanam apEkSya tiSThAmO vayaM kiM sa Eva janastvaM? kiM vayamanyamapEkSya sthAsyAmaH?
So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask Jesus, “Are yoʋ the one who is to come, or should we wait for another?”
20 pazcAttau mAnavau gatvA kathayAmAsatuH, yasyAgamanam apEkSya tiSThAmO vayaM, kiM saEva janastvaM? kiM vayamanyamapEkSya sthAsyAmaH? kathAmimAM tubhyaM kathayituM yOhan majjaka AvAM prESitavAn|
When the men came to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to yoʋ to ask, ‘Are yoʋ the one who is to come, or should we wait for another?’”
21 tasmin daNPE yIzUrOgiNO mahAvyAdhimatO duSTabhUtagrastAMzca bahUn svasthAn kRtvA, anEkAndhEbhyazcakSuMSi dattvA pratyuvAca,
Now in that very hour Jesus had healed many people of diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind.
22 yuvAM vrajatam andhA nEtrANi khanjjAzcaraNAni ca prApnuvanti, kuSThinaH pariSkriyantE, badhirAH zravaNAni mRtAzca jIvanAni prApnuvanti, daridrANAM samIpESu susaMvAdaH pracAryyatE, yaM prati vighnasvarUpOhaM na bhavAmi sa dhanyaH,
So Jesus replied to John's disciples, “Go tell John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news preached to them.
23 EtAni yAni pazyathaH zRNuthazca tAni yOhanaM jnjApayatam|
And blessed is anyone who does not take offense at me.”
24 tayO rdUtayO rgatayOH satO ryOhani sa lOkAn vaktumupacakramE, yUyaM madhyEprAntaraM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kiM vAyunA kampitaM naPaM?
When John's messengers had gone away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25 yUyaM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kiM sUkSmavastraparidhAyinaM kamapi naraM? kintu yE sUkSmamRduvastrANi paridadhati sUttamAni dravyANi bhunjjatE ca tE rAjadhAnISu tiSThanti|
What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and who live in luxury are in royal palaces.
26 tarhi yUyaM kiM draSTuM niragamata? kimEkaM bhaviSyadvAdinaM? tadEva satyaM kintu sa pumAn bhaviSyadvAdinOpi zrESTha ityahaM yuSmAn vadAmi;
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27 pazya svakIyadUtantu tavAgra prESayAmyahaM| gatvA tvadIyamArgantu sa hi pariSkariSyati| yadarthE lipiriyam AstE sa Eva yOhan|
This is the one of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of yoʋ, who will prepare yoʋr way before yoʋ.’
28 atO yuSmAnahaM vadAmi striyA garbbhajAtAnAM bhaviSyadvAdinAM madhyE yOhanO majjakAt zrESThaH kOpi nAsti, tatrApi Izvarasya rAjyE yaH sarvvasmAt kSudraH sa yOhanOpi zrESThaH|
For I tell you, among those born of women there is no prophet greater than John the Baptist, but whoever is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
29 aparanjca sarvvE lOkAH karamanjcAyinazca tasya vAkyAni zrutvA yOhanA majjanEna majjitAH paramEzvaraM nirdOSaM mEnirE|
(When all the people heard this, including the tax collectors, they affirmed that God's way was right, because they had been baptized with the baptism of John.
30 kintu phirUzinO vyavasthApakAzca tEna na majjitAH svAn pratIzvarasyOpadEzaM niSphalam akurvvan|
But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)
31 atha prabhuH kathayAmAsa, idAnIntanajanAn kEnOpamAmi? tE kasya sadRzAH?
Jesus went on to say, “To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?
32 yE bAlakA vipaNyAm upavizya parasparam AhUya vAkyamidaM vadanti, vayaM yuSmAkaM nikaTE vaMzIravAdiSma, kintu yUyaM nAnarttiSTa, vayaM yuSmAkaM nikaTa arOdiSma, kintu yuyaM na vyalapiSTa, bAlakairEtAdRzaistESAm upamA bhavati|
They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call out to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance; we sang a lament for you, but you did not weep.’
33 yatO yOhan majjaka Agatya pUpaM nAkhAdat drAkSArasanjca nApivat tasmAd yUyaM vadatha, bhUtagrastOyam|
For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
34 tataH paraM mAnavasuta AgatyAkhAdadapivanjca tasmAd yUyaM vadatha, khAdakaH surApazcANPAlapApinAM bandhurEkO janO dRzyatAm|
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
35 kintu jnjAninO jnjAnaM nirdOSaM viduH|
Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
36 pazcAdEkaH phirUzI yIzuM bhOjanAya nyamantrayat tataH sa tasya gRhaM gatvA bhOktumupaviSTaH|
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, so he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
37 Etarhi tatphirUzinO gRhE yIzu rbhEktum upAvEkSIt tacchrutvA tannagaravAsinI kApi duSTA nArI pANParaprastarasya sampuTakE sugandhitailam AnIya
And behold, when a woman in that city who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of ointment.
38 tasya pazcAt pAdayOH sannidhau tasyau rudatI ca nEtrAmbubhistasya caraNau prakSAlya nijakacairamArkSIt, tatastasya caraNau cumbitvA tEna sugandhitailEna mamarda|
As she stood behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 tasmAt sa nimantrayitA phirUzI manasA cintayAmAsa, yadyayaM bhaviSyadvAdI bhavEt tarhi EnaM spRzati yA strI sA kA kIdRzI cEti jnjAtuM zaknuyAt yataH sA duSTA|
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 tadA yAzustaM jagAda, hE zimOn tvAM prati mama kinjcid vaktavyamasti; tasmAt sa babhASE, hE gurO tad vadatu|
Jesus said to him in response, “Simon, I have something to say to yoʋ.” So he said, “Say it, Teacher.”
41 EkOttamarNasya dvAvadhamarNAvAstAM, tayOrEkaH panjcazatAni mudrApAdAn aparazca panjcAzat mudrApAdAn dhArayAmAsa|
“A certain moneylender had two debtors. The one owed him five hundred denarii, and the other owed him fifty.
42 tadanantaraM tayOH zOdhyAbhAvAt sa uttamarNastayO rRNE cakSamE; tasmAt tayOrdvayOH kastasmin prESyatE bahu? tad brUhi|
When they did not have the means to repay, he forgave the debts of them both. So tell me, which of them will love him more?”
43 zimOn pratyuvAca, mayA budhyatE yasyAdhikam RNaM cakSamE sa iti; tatO yIzustaM vyAjahAra, tvaM yathArthaM vyacArayaH|
Simon answered, “I suppose that it would be the one for whom he forgave the larger debt.” Jesus said to him, “Yoʋ have judged correctly.”
44 atha tAM nArIM prati vyAghuThya zimOnamavOcat, strImimAM pazyasi? tava gRhE mayyAgatE tvaM pAdaprakSAlanArthaM jalaM nAdAH kintu yOSidESA nayanajalai rmama pAdau prakSAlya kEzairamArkSIt|
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do yoʋ see this woman? When I came into yoʋr house, yoʋ did not give me water for my feet, but this woman has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
45 tvaM mAM nAcumbIH kintu yOSidESA svIyAgamanAdArabhya madIyapAdau cumbituM na vyaraMsta|
Yoʋ did not give me a kiss, but from the time I came in, this woman has not stopped kissing my feet.
46 tvanjca madIyOttamAggE kinjcidapi tailaM nAmardIH kintu yOSidESA mama caraNau sugandhitailEnAmarddIt|
Yoʋ did not anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment.
47 atastvAM vyAharAmi, EtasyA bahu pApamakSamyata tatO bahu prIyatE kintu yasyAlpapApaM kSamyatE sOlpaM prIyatE|
Therefore I tell yoʋ, her many sins are forgiven; that is why she has shown great love. But he to whom little is forgiven shows little love.”
48 tataH paraM sa tAM babhASE, tvadIyaM pApamakSamyata|
Then Jesus said to her, “Yoʋr sins are forgiven.”
49 tadA tEna sArddhaM yE bhOktum upavivizustE parasparaM vaktumArEbhirE, ayaM pApaM kSamatE ka ESaH?
Those who were reclining at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this man that even forgives sins?”
50 kintu sa tAM nArIM jagAda, tava vizvAsastvAM paryyatrAsta tvaM kSEmENa vraja|
And Jesus said to the woman, “Yoʋr faith has saved yoʋ; go in peace.”
