Proverbe 18
1 Prin dorință un om, separându-se, caută și se amestecă cu toată înțelepciunea.
He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire, and snarlest against all sound wisdom.
2 Un prost nu își găsește plăcerea în înțelegere, ci în descoperirea inimii sale.
A fool hath no delight in understanding, but only that his heart may lay itself bare.
3 Când vine cel stricat vine și disprețul, și cu mârșăvia, ocara.
When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
4 Cuvintele gurii unui om sunt ca ape adânci, iar izvorul înțelepciunii ca un pârâu revărsat.
The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters; a flowing brook, a fountain of wisdom.
5 Nu este bine a părtini persoana celui stricat, [nu este bine] a doborî pe cel drept în judecată.
It is not good to respect the person of the wicked, so as to turn aside the righteous in judgment.
6 Buzele prostului intră în ceartă și gura lui cere lovituri.
A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
7 Gura unui prost îi este nimicire și buzele lui sunt capcana sufletului său.
A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
8 Vorbele unui bârfitor sunt ca rănile și coboară în părțile cele mai adânci ale pântecelui.
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
9 Cel care de asemenea lenevește în lucrul său este frate cu cel care risipește mult.
Even one that is slack in his work is brother to him that is a destroyer.
10 Numele DOMNULUI este un turn puternic; cel drept aleargă înăuntrul lui și este în siguranță.
The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is set up on high.
11 Averea bogatului este cetatea lui tare și ca un zid înalt în îngâmfarea lui.
The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit.
12 Înainte de nimicire, inima omului este îngâmfată; și înaintea onoarei, este umilință.
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, and before honour goeth humility.
13 Cel ce răspunde la un lucru înainte să îl audă, aceasta este prostie și rușine pentru el.
He that giveth answer before he heareth, it is folly and confusion unto him.
14 Duhul unui om îi va sprijini neputința, dar cine poate purta un duh rănit?
The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a broken spirit who can bear?
15 Inima celui chibzuit obține cunoaștere și urechea celui înțelept caută cunoaștere.
The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
16 Darul unui om îi face loc și îl aduce înaintea oamenilor însemnați.
A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
17 Primul în propria sa cauză pare drept, dar vine aproapele său și îl cercetează.
He that pleadeth his cause first seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him out.
18 Sorțul face să înceteze certurile și separă între cei puternici.
The lot causeth strife to cease, and parteth asunder the contentious.
19 Un frate ofensat este mai greu de câștigat decât o cetate tare, și certurile lor sunt ca zăbrelele unui castel.
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
20 Pântecele unui om va fi săturat cu rodul gurii sale; și cu câștigul buzelor sale se va îndestula.
A man's belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; with the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.
21 Moarte și viață sunt în puterea limbii, și cei ce o iubesc vor mânca din rodul ei.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that indulge it shall eat the fruit thereof.
22 Oricine găsește o soție găsește un lucru bun și obține favoare de la DOMNUL.
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a great good, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
23 Săracul folosește rugăminți, dar cel bogat răspunde cu asprime.
The poor useth entreaties; but the rich answereth impudently.
24 Un om care are prieteni trebuie să se arate el însuși prietenos; și este un prieten care se lipește mai aproape ca un frate.
There are friends that one hath to his own hurt; but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
