Iona 1

1 Şi cuvântul DOMNULUI a venit la Iona, fiul lui Amitai, spunând:

Now the LORD’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 Ridică-te, du-te la Ninive, acea mare cetate şi strigă împotriva ei, pentru că stricăciunea lor s-a ridicat înaintea mea.

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”

3 Dar Iona s-a ridicat să fugă la Tarsis, departe de prezența DOMNULUI; şi a coborât la Iafo; şi a găsit o corabie care mergea la Tarsis, aşa că el a plătit costul călătoriei şi a coborât în ea, ca să meargă cu ei la Tarsis, departe de prezența DOMNULUI.

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 Dar DOMNUL a trimis un vânt tare pe mare şi a fost o furtună puternică pe mare, aşa încât corabia era gata să fie spartă.

But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.

5 Atunci marinarii s-au înspăimântat şi a strigat fiecare bărbat către dumnezeul lui şi au aruncat în mare încărcăturile care erau în corabie, ca să fie uşurată de ele. Dar Iona a coborât în părţile de jos ale corabiei şi s-a culcat şi a dormit adânc.

Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.

6 Atunci căpitanul a venit la el şi i-a spus: Ce faci somnorosule? Ridică-te, cheamă pe Dumnezeul tău, poate că Dumnezeu se va gândi la noi, ca să nu pierim!

So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”

7 Şi au spus fiecare unul către altul: Veniţi şi să aruncăm sorţi, ca să ştim din cauza cui este asupra noastră acest rău. Astfel ei au aruncat sorţi şi sorţul a căzut pe Iona.

They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

8 Atunci i-au spus: Spune-ne, te rugăm, din cauza cui este acest rău asupra noastră? Care este ocupaţia ta? Şi de unde vii tu? Care este ţara ta? Şi din ce popor eşti tu?

Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”

9 Şi el le-a spus: Eu sunt evreu; şi mă tem de DOMNUL, Dumnezeul cerului, care a făcut marea şi uscatul.

He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”

10 Atunci oamenii au fost grozav de înspăimântaţi şi i-au spus: De ce ai făcut aceasta? Pentru că bărbaţii au ştiut că el fugea departe de faţa DOMNULUI, pentru că le spusese.

Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11 Atunci i-au spus: Ce să îţi facem, ca marea să se liniştească faţă de noi? Pentru că marea se înfuria şi era furtunoasă.

Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

12 Şi el le-a spus: Luaţi-mă şi aruncaţi-mă în mare; astfel marea se va linişti faţă de voi, pentru că ştiu că din cauza mea această mare furtună este asupra voastră.

He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”

13 Totuşi oamenii au vâslit din greu ca să aducă corabia la uscat, dar nu puteau, pentru că marea se înfuria şi era furtunoasă împotriva lor.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.

14 De aceea au strigat către DOMNUL şi au spus: Te implorăm, DOAMNE, te implorăm, nu ne lăsa să pierim din cauza vieţii acestui om şi nu pune asupra noastră sânge nevinovat! Pentru că tu, DOAMNE, ai făcut cum ai dorit.

Therefore they cried to the LORD, and said, “We beg you, LORD, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, LORD, have done as it pleased you.”

15 Astfel au luat pe Iona şi l-au aruncat în mare, şi furia mării a încetat.

So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.

16 Atunci oamenii s-au temut de DOMNUL grozav de tare şi au oferit un sacrificiu DOMNULUI şi au făcut promisiuni.

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.

17 Şi DOMNUL pregătise un peşte mare care să înghită pe Iona. Şi Iona a fost în pântecele peştelui trei zile şi trei nopţi.

The LORD prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
