1 Atunci Elifaz temanitul a răspuns și a zis:
Forsothe Eliphat Themanytes answeride, and seide,
2 Dacă încercăm să vorbim îndeaproape cu tine, vei fi mâhnit? Dar cine se poate opri de la a vorbi?
If we bigynnen to speke to thee, in hap thou schalt take it heuyli; but who may holde a word conseyued?
3 Iată, tu ai instruit pe mulți și ai întărit mâinile slabe.
Lo! thou hast tauyt ful many men, and thou hast strengthid hondis maad feynt.
4 Cuvintele tale au susținut pe cel ce cădea și ai întărit genunchii slabi.
Thi wordis confermyden men doutynge, and thou coumfortidist knees tremblynge.
5 Dar acum aceasta a venit peste tine și leșini; te atinge și ești tulburat.
But now a wounde is comun on thee, and thou hast failid; it touchide thee, and thou art disturblid.
6 Nu este aceasta teama ta, încrederea ta, speranța ta și integritatea căilor tale?
Where is thi drede, thi strengthe, and thi pacience, and the perfeccioun of thi weies?
7 Amintește-ți, te rog, cine a pierit vreodată, fiind nevinovat? Sau unde au fost stârpiți cei drepți?
Y biseche thee, haue thou mynde, what innocent man perischide euere, ethir whanne riytful men weren doon awei?
8 După cum am văzut, cei ce ară nelegiuire și seamănă stricăciune, seceră aceleași lucruri.
Certis rathir Y siy hem, that worchen wickidnesse, and sowen sorewis,
9 Prin pufnirea lui Dumnezeu ei pier și prin suflarea nărilor sale sunt mistuiți.
and repen tho, to haue perischid bi God blowynge, and to be wastid bi the spirit of his ire.
10 Răcnetul leului și vocea leului feroce și dinții leilor tineri, sunt frânte.
The roryng of a lioun, and the vois of a lionesse, and the teeth of `whelpis of liouns ben al to-brokun.
11 Leul bătrân piere din lipsă de pradă și puii leoaicei tari sunt împrăștiați peste tot.

12 Acum un lucru mi-a fost adus în ascuns și urechea mea a primit puțin din acesta.

13 În gândurile din viziunile nopții, când somn adânc cade peste oameni,
In the hidousnesse of `nyytis siyt, whanne heuy sleep is wont to occupie men,
14 Teamă a venit asupra mea și cutremur, care a făcut toate oasele mele să tremure.
drede and tremblyng helde me; and alle my boonys weren aferd.
15 Atunci un duh a trecut înaintea feței mele; părul cărnii mele s-a zbârlit;
And whanne the spirit `yede in my presence, the heiris of `my fleisch hadden hidousnesse.
16 A stat pe loc, dar nu i-am putut distinge forma; o imagine a fost înaintea ochilor mei, era liniște și am auzit o voce, spunând:
Oon stood, whos chere Y knewe not, an ymage bifor myn iyen; and Y herde a vois as of softe wynd.
17 Să fie omul muritor mai drept decât Dumnezeu? Să fie un om mai pur decât făcătorul său?
Whether a man schal be maad iust in comparisoun of God? ethir whethir a man schal be clennere than his Makere?
18 Iată, el nu și-a pus încrederea în servitorii săi; și pe îngerii săi i-a acuzat de nebunie.
Lo! thei that seruen hym ben not stidefast; and he findith schrewidnesse in hise aungels.
19 Cu cât mai puțin în cei ce locuiesc în case de lut, a căror temelie este în țărână, care sunt zdrobite înaintea moliei?

20 Ei sunt nimiciți de dimineața până seara, ei pier pentru totdeauna fără ca cineva să ia aminte.
Fro morewtid til to euentid thei schulen be kit doun; and for no man vndurstondith, thei schulen perische with outen ende.
21 Nu va dispărea măreția care este în ei? Ei mor, chiar fără înțelepciune.
Sotheli thei, that ben residue, schulen be takun awei; thei schulen die, and not in wisdom.
