1 Frații mei, să nu aveți credința Domnului nostru Isus Cristos, Domn al gloriei, fiind părtinitori.
My brethren, hold ye not the faith of the glory of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, with a respect to persons.
2 Căci dacă în adunarea voastră ar intra un om cu un inel de aur, în haină strălucitoare, și ar intra și un sărac în haină murdară,
For if there come into your assembly a man with rings of gold or splendid garments, and there come in a poor man in sordid garments;
3 Și ați avea respect față de cel care poartă haina strălucitoare și i-ați spune: Așază-te aici în loc bun; și i-ați spune săracului: Tu stai acolo în picioare, sau, Așază-te aici sub sprijinul piciorului meu,
and ye show respect to him who is clothed in splendid garments, and say to him, Seat thyself here, conspicuously; while to the poor man, ye say, Stand thou there, or sit thou here before my footstool;
4 Nu deveniți atunci părtinitori în voi înșivă și judecători ai gândurilor rele?
are ye not divided among yourselves, and become expositors of evil thoughts?
5 Dați ascultare preaiubiții mei frați: Nu a ales Dumnezeu pe săracii acestei lumi, [să fie] bogați în credință și moștenitori ai împărăției pe care a promis-o celor ce îl iubesc?
Hear, my beloved brethren; hath not God chosen the poor of the world, but the rich in faith, to be heirs in the kingdom which God hath promised to them that love him?
6 Dar voi îl disprețuiați pe cel sărac. Nu bogații vă oprimă și vă târăsc înaintea scaunelor de judecată?
But ye have despised the poor man. Do not rich men exalt themselves over you, and drag you before the tribunals?
7 Nu blasfemiază ei acel nume virtuos cu care sunteți chemați?
Do they not revile that worthy name, which is invoked upon you?
8 Dacă într-adevăr împliniți legea împărătească conform scripturii: Să iubești pe aproapele tău ca pe tine însuți, bine faceți;
And if in this ye fulfill the law of God, as it is written, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye will do well:
9 Dar dacă arătați părtinire, comiteți păcat și sunteți condamnați de lege ca și călcători ai legii.
but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin; and ye are convicted by the law, as transgressors of the law.
10 Fiindcă oricine va ține toată legea și totuși se poticnește într-un punct, este vinovat de toate.
For he that shall keep the whole law, and yet fail in one precept, is obnoxious to the whole law.
11 Fiindcă cel ce a spus: Să nu comiți adulter, a spus de asemenea: Să nu ucizi. Iar dacă nu comiți adulter, dar ucizi, te faci călcător al legii.
For he who said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. If then thou commit no adultery, but thou killest, thou hast become a transgressor of the law.
12 Astfel să vorbiți și astfel să faceți, ca unii care vor fi judecați prin legea libertății,
So speak ye, and so act, as persons that are to be judged by the law of liberty.
13 Fiindcă [pentru] cel ce nu a arătat milă judecata va fi fără milă; și mila se bucură asupra judecății.
For judgment without mercy shall be on him, who hath practised no mercy: by mercy, ye will be raised above judgment.
14 Care este folosul, frații mei, dacă cineva spune că are credință și nu are fapte? Poate [această] credință să îl salveze?
What is the use, my brethren, if a man say, I have faith; and he hath no works? can his faith vivify him?
15 Și dacă un frate sau o soră sunt goi și lipsiți de mâncarea zilnică,
Or if a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 Iar unul dintre voi ar spune acestora: Plecați în pace, încălziți-vă și săturați-vă, dar nu ați da acestora cele necesare trupului, ce folos?
and one of you say to them, Go in peace, warm yourselves, and be full; and ye give them not the necessaries of the body, what is the use?
17 Așa și credința, dacă nu are fapte, este moartă, fiind singură.
So also faith alone, without works, is dead.
18 Dar va spune cineva: Tu ai credință și eu am fapte; arată-mi credința ta fără faptele tale și eu îți voi arăta credința mea prin faptele mele.
For a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show to me thy faith that is without works; and I will show to thee, my faith by my works.
19 Tu crezi că este un singur Dumnezeu; bine faci; și dracii cred și tremură.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou dost well; the demons also believe, and tremble.
20 Dorești dar să știi, omule deșert, că este moartă credința despărțită de fapte?
Wouldst thou know, O frail man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Avraam, tatăl nostru, nu prin fapte a fost declarat drept, când a oferit pe fiul său, Isaac, pe altar?
Abraham our father, was not he justified by works, in offering his son Isaac upon the altar?
22 Vezi cum credința lucra împreună cu faptele lui, și prin fapte, credința a fost desăvârșită?
Seest thou, that his faith aided his works; and that by the works his faith was rendered complete?
23 Și a fost împlinită scriptura care spune: Avraam l-a crezut pe Dumnezeu și aceasta i s-a atribuit pentru dreptate; și a fost numit prietenul lui Dumnezeu.
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith: Abraham believed in God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Vedeți așadar cum prin fapte este declarat drept omul și nu doar prin credință.
Thou seest, that by works a man is justified, and not by faith alone.
25 Tot așa și curva Rahab, nu prin fapte a fost declarată dreaptă, când a primit mesagerii și i-a trimis afară pe altă cale?
So also Rahab, the harlot, was not she justified by works, when she entertained the spies, and sent them forth by another way?
26 Căci după cum trupul despărțit de duh este mort, tot așa și credința despărțită de fapte este moartă.
As the body without the spirit, is dead; so faith without works, is dead also.
