Isaia 36
1 Şi s-a întâmplat în al paisprezecelea an al împăratului Ezechia, că Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, s-a ridicat împotriva tuturor cetăţilor apărate ale lui Iuda şi le-a luat.
In the fourteenth year of the reign of Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, attacked and conquered all the fortified towns of Judah.
2 Şi împăratul Asiriei a trimis pe Rabşache din Lachis la Ierusalim, la împăratul Ezechia, cu o mare armată. Şi el a stat în picioare lângă apeductul iazului superior pe drumul mare al câmpului înălbitorului.
The king of Assyria sent his army general, along with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. He stopped by the aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer's Field.
3 Atunci au venit la el Eliachim, fiul lui Hilchia, care era peste casă; şi Şebna, scribul, şi Ioah, fiul lui Asaf, cronicarul.
Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, the palace manager, Shebnah the scribe, and Joah, son of Asaph, the record-keeper, went out to speak with him.
4 Şi Rabşache le-a spus: Spuneţi-i acum lui Ezechia: Astfel spune marele împărat, împăratul Asiriei: Ce este această încredere în care te încrezi?
The Assyrian army general said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: What are you trusting in that gives you such confidence?
5 Eu zic, tu spui (dar ele sunt doar vorbe deşarte): Eu am sfat şi tărie pentru război. Şi în cine te încrezi, de te-ai răzvrătit împotriva mea?
You say you have a strategy and are ready for war, but these are empty words. Who are you relying on, now that you have rebelled against me?
6 Iată, tu te încrezi în toiagul acestei trestii frânte, în Egipt, pe care dacă un om se sprijină îi va intra în mână şi i-o va străpunge; astfel este Faraon, împăratul Egiptului, pentru toţi cei care se încred în el.
Now look! You're trusting in Egypt, a walking stick that's like a broken reed that will cut the hand of anyone leaning on it. That's what Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is like to everyone who trusts in him.
7 Iar dacă îmi spui: Ne încredem în DOMNUL Dumnezeul nostru, nu este el acela, a cărui înălţimi şi ale cărui altare Ezechia le-a îndepărtat şi a spus lui Iuda şi Ierusalimului: Înaintea acestui altar să vă închinaţi?
If you tell me, ‘We're trusting in the Lord our God,’ well didn't Hezekiah remove his high places and his altars, telling Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You have to worship at this altar in Jerusalem’?
8 De aceea acum, te rog, dă garanţii stăpânului meu, împăratul Asiriei, şi îţi voi da două mii de cai, dacă eşti în stare, din partea ta, să pui călăreţi pe ei.
Why don't you accept a challenge from my master, the king of Assyria? He says, I'll give you two thousand horses, if you can find enough riders for them!
9 Cum vei întoarce atunci faţa unei căpetenii dintre cei mai mici servitori ai stăpânului meu şi îţi pui încrederea în Egipt pentru care şi călăreţi?
How could you defeat even a single officer in charge of the weakest of my master's men when you're trusting in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
10 Şi fără DOMNUL am urcat eu acum împotriva acestei ţări pentru a o distruge? DOMNUL mi-a spus: Urcă-te împotriva acestei ţări şi distruge-o.
More than that—would I have come to attack this place without the Lord's encouragement? It was the Lord himself who told me, ‘Go and attack this land and destroy it.’”
11 Atunci Eliachim şi Şebna şi Ioah au spus lui Rabşache: Vorbeşte, te rog, servitorilor tăi în limba siriană, fiindcă o înţelegem; şi nu ne vorbi în limba iudeilor în urechile poporului care este pe zid.
Eliakim, Shebnah, and Joah, said to the army general, “Please speak to us, your servants, in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don't speak to us in Hebrew while the people on the wall are listening.”
12 Dar Rabşache le-a spus: M-a trimis stăpânul meu la stăpânul tău şi la tine, pentru a spune aceste cuvinte? Nu la oamenii care stau pe zid, ca să îşi mănânce propriile lor fecale şi să îşi bea propria lor urină cu voi?
But the army general replied, “Did my master only send me to say these things to your master and to you, and not to the people sitting on the wall? They too, just like you, are going to have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine!”
13 Atunci Rabşache s-a ridicat în picioare şi a strigat cu voce tare în limba iudeilor şi a spus: Ascultaţi cuvintele marelui împărat, împăratul Asiriei.
Then the army general shouted out in Hebrew, “Listen to this from the great king, the king of Assyria!
14 Astfel spune împăratul: Să nu vă înşele Ezechia, fiindcă nu va fi în stare să vă scape.
This is what the king says: Don't let Hezekiah trick you! He can't save you!
15 Nici nu lăsaţi pe Ezechia să vă facă să vă puneţi încrederea în DOMNUL, spunând: DOMNUL ne va scăpa, într-adevăr, şi această cetate nu va fi dată în mâna împăratului Asiriei.
Don't believe Hezekiah when he tells you to trust in the Lord, saying, ‘I'm certain the Lord will save us. This city will never fall into the hands of the king of Assyria.’
16 Nu daţi ascultare lui Ezechia, fiindcă astfel spune împăratul Asiriei: Faceţi pace cu mine, aducându-mi un dar şi ieşiţi la mine; şi mâncaţi fiecare din viţa lui şi fiecare din smochinul lui, beţi fiecare din apele izvorului său;
Don't listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king says: Make a peace treaty with me and surrender to me. That way everyone will eat from their own vine and their own fig tree, and drink water from their own well!
17 Până voi veni şi vă voi lua într-o ţară ca ţara voastră, o ţară a grânelor şi a vinului, o ţară a pâinii şi a viilor.
I will come and take you to a land that's like your own, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 Aveţi grijă să nu vă convingă Ezechia, spunând: DOMNUL ne va scăpa. A scăpat vreunul din dumnezeii naţiunilor ţara lui din mâna împăratului Asiriei?
But don't let Hezekiah trick you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Have any of the gods of any nation ever saved their land from the power of the king of Assyria?
19 Unde sunt dumnezeii Hamatului şi Arpadului? Unde sunt dumnezeii Sefarvaimului? Au scăpat ei Samaria din mâna mea?
Where were the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where were the gods of Sepharvaim? Were they able to save Samaria from me?
20 Cine sunt aceia dintre toţi dumnezeii acestor ţări, care au scăpat ţara lor din mâna mea, ca DOMNUL să scape Ierusalimul din mâna mea?
Which one of all the gods of these countries has saved their land from me? How then could the Lord save Jerusalem from me?”
21 Dar ei au tăcut şi nu i-au răspuns niciun cuvânt, fiindcă porunca spusă de împărat era: Să nu îi răspundeţi.
But the people remained silent and didn't say anything, for Hezekiah had given the order, “Don't answer him.”
22 Atunci Eliachim, fiul lui Hilchia, care era peste casă, şi Şebna, scribul, şi Ioah, fiul lui Asaf, cronicarul, au venit la Ezechia cu hainele sfâşiate şi i-au spus cuvintele lui Rabşache.
Then Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, the palace manager, Shebna the scribe, and Joah, son of Asaph, the record-keeper, went to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and they told him what the Assyrian army general had said.
