Eclesiastul 4

1 Astfel m-am întors și am luat în considerare toate oprimările făcute sub soare; și iată, lacrimile celor oprimați și nu au avut mângâietor; și de partea opresorilor lor era putere; dar ei nu au avut mângâietor.

And I turned about, and beheld all the oppressed that are made so under the sun: and, behold, there are the tears of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and from the hand of their oppressors they suffer violence; and they have no comforter.

2 De aceea am lăudat pe morții care sunt deja morți, mai mult decât pe viii care sunt încă vii.

Thereupon praised I the dead that are already dead, more than the living who are still alive;

3 Da, mai bine decât amândoi este cel care încă nu este, care încă nu a văzut lucrarea rea făcută sub soare.

And as happier than both of them, him who hath not yet come into being, who hath not seen the evil-doing that is done under the sun.—

4 Din nou, am luat în considerare toată osteneala și fiecare lucrare dreaptă, pentru aceasta un om este invidiat de aproapele său. Aceasta este de asemenea deșertăciune și chinuire a duhului.

Again, I beheld all the toil, and all the energy in doing, that it is [from] the envy of one man of his neighbor. Also this is vanity and a torture of the spirit.

5 Prostul își încrucișează mâinile și își mănâncă propria carne.

The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

6 Mai bine este o mână plină, cu liniște, decât amândouă mâinile pline, dar cu osteneală și chinuire a duhului.

Better is a handful of quiet, than both the hands full of toil and torture of spirit.

7 Atunci m-am întors și am văzut deșertăciune sub soare.

Then I turned about, and I saw a vanity under the sun.

8 Este unul singur și nu este un al doilea; da, el nu are nici copil, nici frate, totuși nu este sfârșit la toată munca lui, nici nu se satură ochiul lui cu bogății, nici nu spune: Pentru cine muncesc eu și îmi văduvesc sufletul de bine? Aceasta este de asemenea deșertăciune, da, este osteneală grea.

There is one alone, and he hath not a companion; yea, he hath neither son nor brother: yet is there no end to all his toil; his eye also is not satisfied with riches. Yet for whom do I toil, and deprive my soul of good? Also this is vanity, yea, it is a bad employment.

9 Doi sunt mai buni decât unul, pentru că au o bună răsplată pentru munca lor.

Two are better than one; because they will have a good reward for their toil.

10 Căci dacă ar cădea se ridică unul pe altul; dar vai celui ce este singur când cade, pentru că el nu are pe un altul să îl ridice.

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to the single one that falleth; for he hath no companion to lift him up.

11 Din nou, dacă doi se culcă împreună, le este cald; dar cum poate unul singur să se încălzească?

Also, if two lie together, then will they become warm; but how can one person alone become warm?

12 Și dacă cineva îl învinge pe unul, doi i se vor împotrivi; și o frânghie împletită în trei nu se rupe repede.

And if a man could overpower him, the single one, two would stand up against him: and a threefold cord cannot quickly be torn asunder.

13 Mai bine este un copil sărac și înțelept decât un împărat bătrân și prost, care refuză să se mai lase avertizat.

Better is a poor and a wise youth than an old and foolish king, who knoweth not how to be admonished any more.

14 Căci din închisoare el iese să domnească; după cum la fel cel născut în împărăția sa devine sărac.

For out of the prison cometh the one to reign: whereas also in his kingdom the other becometh poor.

15 Am luat în considerare pe toți cei vii care umblă sub soare, împreună cu al doilea copil care se va ridica în locul lui.

I have seen all the living who walk under the sun, being with the second child that is to stand up in his stead.

16 Fără sfârșit este tot poporul și toți ce au fost înaintea lor; de asemenea cei ce vor veni mai pe urmă nu se vor bucura de el. Cu adevărat și aceasta este deșertăciune și chinuire a duhului.

There was no end to all the people, [belonging] to all that have been before them: they also that come after will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a torture of the spirit.—
