Eclesiastul 10
1 Muștele moarte fac untdelemnul parfumierului să trimită o aromă împuțită; tot așa îi face o mică prostie celui însemnat pentru înțelepciune și onoare.
Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; [so] doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.
2 Inima unui înțelept este la dreapta lui, dar inima prostului la stânga lui.
A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
3 Da, de asemenea, când cel ce este prost umblă pe cale, îi lipsește înțelepciunea și el spune tuturor că este prost.
Yea also, when the fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one [that] he is a fool.
4 Dacă duhul stăpânului se ridică împotriva ta, nu îți părăsi locul, căci cedarea alină ofense mari.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.
5 Este un rău pe care l-am văzut sub soare, ca pe o eroare [care] iese de la stăpân;
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6 Prostia este așezată în mare demnitate și cei bogați șed într-un loc jos.
folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.
7 Am văzut servitori pe cai și prinți umblând ca servitori pe pământ.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.
8 Cel ce sapă o groapă va cădea în ea; și pe oricine sparge un gard, îl va mușca un șarpe.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Oricine îndepărtează pietre va fi rănit de ele, și cel ce despică lemne va fi în pericol prin ele.
Whoso heweth out stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.
10 Dacă fierul este tocit și el nu ascute tăișul, atunci trebuie să pună mai multă putere; dar înțelepciunea este de folos pentru a îndrepta.
If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11 Cu adevărat șarpele va mușca fără fermecare, și un guraliv nu este mai bun.
If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then is there no advantage in the charmer.
12 Cuvintele gurii unui om înțelept sunt cu har, dar buzele unui prost îl vor înghiți.
The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 Începutul cuvintelor gurii sale este prostie, și sfârșitul vorbirii sale este nebunie răutăcioasă.
The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
14 Un prost de asemenea este plin de cuvinte, un om nu poate spune ce va fi; și ce va fi după el, cine îi poate spune?
A fool also multiplieth words: [yet] man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 Munca prostului obosește pe fiecare dintre ei, pentru că el nu știe cum să meargă la cetate.
The labor of fools wearieth every one of them; for he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 Vai ție, țară, când împăratul tău este un copil și prinții tăi mănâncă dimineața!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 Binecuvântată ești tu, țară, când împăratul tău este fiul nobililor și prinții tăi mănâncă la timpul cuvenit, pentru putere și nu pentru beție!
Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 Prin multă lene clădirea se degradează, și prin trândăvia mâinilor, casa se prăbușește.
By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.
19 Ospățul se face pentru râs și vinul înveselește, dar banii răspund la toate.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.
20 Nu blestema pe împărat, nici chiar în gândul tău; și nu blestema pe bogat în camera ta de culcare, pentru că o pasăre a cerului va purta vocea și o înaripată va spune acest lucru.
Revile not the king, no, not in thy thought; and revile not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the heavens shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
