Eclesiastul 1
1 Cuvintele Predicatorului, fiul lui David, împărat în Ierusalim.
THE WORDS OF the Koheleth, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 Deșertăciunea deșertăciunilor, spune Predicatorul: deșertăciunea deșertăciunilor; totul este deșertăciune.
Vanity of vanities, saith Koheleth; vanity of vanities, all is vanity.
3 Ce folos are un om din toată munca lui pe care o face sub soare?
What profit hath man of all his labour wherein he laboureth under the sun?
4 O generație trece și altă generație vine, dar pământul rămâne pentru totdeauna.
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; and the earth abideth for ever.
5 Soarele de asemenea răsare și soarele apune și se grăbește spre locul său de unde a răsărit.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth.
6 Vântul merge spre sud și se întoarce spre nord; se învârtește continuu, și vântul se întoarce din nou conform rotirilor sale.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it turneth about continually in its circuit, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.
7 Toate râurile curg în mare, totuși marea nu se umple; la locul de unde râurile vin, într-acolo se întorc din nou.
All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.
8 Toate lucrurile sunt în osteneală; omul nu o poate rosti; ochiul nu se satură a vedea, nici urechea nu se umple cu auzire.
All things toil to weariness; man cannot utter it, the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 Ce a fost, aceea va mai fi; și ce s-a făcut, se va mai face; și nu este nimic nou sub soare.
That which hath been is that which shall be, and that which hath been done is that which shall be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Este ceva despre care s-ar putea spune: Vezi, acesta este nou? Era deja în vechimea care a fost înainte de noi.
Is there a thing whereof it is said: 'See, this is new'? — it hath been already, in the ages which were before us.
11 Nu este amintire a lucrurilor dinainte; nici nu va fi vreo amintire a lucrurilor ce vor veni la cei ce vor veni după.
There is no remembrance of them of former times; neither shall there be any remembrance of them of latter times that are to come, among those that shall come after.
12 Eu, Predicatorul, am fost împărat peste Israel în Ierusalim.
I Koheleth have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13 Și mi-am pus inima să caut și să cercetez prin înțelepciune toate câte sunt făcute sub cer; această osteneală grea a dat-o Dumnezeu fiilor oamenilor ca să fie umiliți prin ea.
And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven; it is a sore task that God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.
14 Eu am văzut toate lucrările făcute sub soare; și, iată, totul este deșertăciune și chinuire a duhului.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.
15 Ce este strâmb nu poate fi îndreptat, și ce lipsește nu poate fi numărat.
That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 Am vorbit îndeaproape cu inima mea, spunând: Iată, am ajuns mare și am obținut mai multă înțelepciune decât toți cei ce au fost înainte de mine în Ierusalim; da, inima mea a văzut înțelepciune și cunoaștere din abundență.
I spoke with my own heart, saying: 'Lo, I have gotten great wisdom, more also than all that were before me over Jerusalem'; yea, my heart hath had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17 Și mi-am pus inima să cunosc înțelepciunea și să cunosc nebunia și prostia; am priceput că aceasta de asemenea este chinuire a duhului.
And I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly — I perceived that this also was a striving after wind.
18 Căci în multă înțelepciune este multă mâhnire, și cel ce mărește cunoașterea mărește întristarea.
For in much wisdom is much vexation; and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
