Deuteronomul 19
1 După ce DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău va stârpi naţiunile, a căror ţară ţi-o dă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău, şi le vei alunga şi vei locui în cetăţile lor şi în casele lor,
When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
2 Să îţi separi trei cetăţi în mijlocul ţării tale, pe care ţi-o dă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău, ca să o stăpâneşti.
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
3 Să îţi pregăteşti o cale şi să împarţi în trei părţi hotarele ţării tale, pe care ţi-o dă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău ca să o moşteneşti, ca orice ucigaş să fugă acolo.
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
4 Şi acesta este cazul ucigaşului, care va fugi acolo, ca să trăiască. Cine ucide fără intenţie pe aproapele său, pe care nu l-a urât în trecut;
And this [is] the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
5 Ca atunci când un om merge cu vecinul său în pădure să taie lemne şi mâna sa dă o lovitură cu securea să taie lemnul şi fierul iese din coadă şi cade pe vecinul său încât el moare; el să fugă într-una din acele cetăţi şi să trăiască;
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
6 Ca nu cumva răzbunătorul sângelui să urmărească pe ucigaş, pe când inima lui este aprinsă şi să îl ajungă, deoarece calea este lungă şi să îl ucidă; deşi nu era demn de moarte, pentru că nu l-a urât în trecut.
Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he [was] not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7 De aceea îţi poruncesc, spunând: Să îţi separi trei cetăţi.
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
8 Şi dacă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău îţi lărgeşte hotarul, precum a jurat părinţilor tăi şi îţi dă toată ţara, pe care a promis că o va da părinţilor tăi,
And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
9 Dacă vei păzi ca să faci toate aceste porunci, pe care ţi le poruncesc astăzi, să iubeşti pe DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău şi să umbli pe căile lui în toate zilele, atunci să îţi mai adaugi încă trei cetăţi, pe lângă acestea trei,
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
10 Ca să nu fie vărsat sânge nevinovat în ţara ta, pe care ţi-o dă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău de moştenire, şi astfel sânge să fie peste tine.
That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance, and [so] blood be upon thee.
11 Dar dacă vreun om urăşte pe aproapele său şi îl pândeşte şi se ridică împotriva lui şi îl loveşte de moarte încât el moare, şi fuge într-una din aceste cetăţi,
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
12 Atunci bătrânii cetăţii sale să trimită şi să îl aducă de acolo şi să îl predea în mâna răzbunătorului sângelui, ca să moară.
Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13 Ochiul tău să nu aibă milă de el, iar tu să îndepărtezi sângele nevinovat din Israel, ca să îţi fie bine.
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away [the guilt of] innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14 Să nu muţi pietrele de hotar ale aproapelui tău, pe care le-au pus cei din vechime în moştenirea ta, pe care o vei moşteni în ţara, pe care ţi-o dă DOMNUL Dumnezeul tău, ca să o stăpâneşti.
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15 Un singur martor să nu se ridice împotriva unui om pentru vreo nelegiuire, sau pentru vreun păcat, în orice păcat prin care păcătuieşte; prin gura a doi martori sau prin gura a trei martori, să fie întemeiat un lucru.
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16 Dacă se ridică un martor fals împotriva cuiva să mărturisească împotriva lui vreun lucru nedrept,
If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him [that which is] wrong;
17 Atunci cei doi bărbaţi, între care este cearta, să stea în picioare înaintea DOMNULUI, înaintea preoţilor şi a judecătorilor care vor fi în acele zile.
Then both the men, between whom the controversy [is], shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18 Şi judecătorii să cerceteze cu de-amănuntul; şi, iată, dacă martorul este martor fals şi a mărturisit fals împotriva fratelui său,
And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, [if] the witness [be] a false witness, [and] hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 Atunci să îi faceţi precum s-a gândit el să facă fratelui său, astfel să îndepărtezi răul din mijlocul tău.
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20 Şi cei care rămân, să audă şi să se teamă şi să nu mai facă un asemenea rău printre voi.
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
21 Şi ochiul tău să nu aibă milă, ci viaţă pentru viaţă, ochi pentru ochi, dinte pentru dinte, mână pentru mână, picior pentru picior.
And thine eye shall not pity; [but] life [shall go] for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
