Jonas 3
1 A palavra de Yahweh veio a Jonah pela segunda vez, dizendo,
This message from the Lord came to Jonah the second time,
2 “Levanta-te, vai a Nínive, aquela grande cidade, e prega a ela a mensagem que eu te dou”.
‘Arise, go to that great city, Nineveh, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’
3 Então Jonas se levantou, e foi para Níniveh, de acordo com a palavra de Javé. Agora Nínive era uma cidade extremamente grande, com três dias de viagem de travessia.
So Jonah started for Nineveh, as the Lord commanded. Now Nineveh was so large a city that it took three days’ journey to cross it.
4 Jonas começou a entrar na cidade por um dia de viagem, e gritou, e disse: “Em quarenta dias, Nínive será derrubada”!
Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, and he proclaimed, ‘Forty days more and Nineveh will be overthrown.’
5 O povo de Nínive acreditava em Deus; e proclamavam um jejum e vestiam pano de saco, desde seu maior até seu menor.
And the people of Nineveh believed God; and they ordered a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6 A notícia chegou ao rei de Nínive, e ele se levantou de seu trono, tirou seu manto real, cobriu-se de pano de saco e sentou-se em cinzas.
And when word came to the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his robe, dressed in sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 Ele fez uma proclamação e publicou através de Nínive pelo decreto do rei e seus nobres, dizendo: “Que nem homem nem animal, nem gado nem rebanho, provem nada; que não se alimentem, nem bebam água;
And he made this proclamation and published it in Nineveh: ‘By the decree of the king and his nobles: People, beast, herd, and flock must not taste anything; let them not eat nor drink water.
8 mas que se cubram de saco, tanto homem quanto animal, e que chorem poderosamente a Deus”. Sim, deixe-os desviar todos de seu mau caminho e da violência que está em suas mãos.
Let both people and animals put on sackcloth and let them cry earnestly to God; let them each turn from their evil ways and from the deeds of violence which they are doing.
9 Quem sabe se Deus não se voltará e cederá, e se afastará de sua raiva feroz, para que não pereçamos?”.
Who knows? God may relent and avert his fierce anger, so that we may not die.’
10 Deus viu suas obras, que eles se viraram de seu caminho maligno. Deus se arrependeu do desastre que disse que faria com eles, e não o fez.
When God saw that they turned from their evil course, he relented the evil which he said he would do to them, and did not do it.
