Provérbios 23
1 Quando te sentares para comer com algum dominador, presta muita atenção para o que estiver diante de ti;
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Consider well what is before thee;
2 E põe uma faca à tua garganta, se tiveres muito apetite.
For thou wilt put a knife to thy throat, If thou art a man given to appetite!
3 Não desejes as comidas gostosas dele, porque são pão de mentiras.
Long not for his dainties. For they are deceitful meat.
4 Não trabalhes exaustivamente para ser rico; modera-te por meio de tua prudência.
Toil not to become rich; Cease from this, thy wisdom.
5 Porás teus olhos fixos sobre aquilo que é nada? Porque certamente se fará asas, e voará ao céu como uma águia.
Wilt thou let thine eyes fly toward them? They are gone! For riches truly make to themselves wings; They fly away like the eagle toward heaven.
6 Não comas o pão de quem tem olho maligno, nem cobices suas comidas gostosas.
Eat not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, And long not for his dainties;
7 Porque ele calcula [seus gastos] consigo mesmo. Assim ele dirá: Come e bebe; Mas o coração dele não está contigo;
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
8 Vomitarias o pedaço que comeste, e perderias tuas palavras agradáveis.
The morsel, which thou hast eaten, thou shalt vomit up; And thou wilt have thrown away thy sweet words.
9 Não fales aos ouvidos do tolo, porque ele desprezará a prudência de tuas palavras.
Speak not in the ears of a fool; For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10 Não mudes os limites antigos, nem ultrapasses as propriedades dos órfãos;
Remove not the ancient landmark, And enter not into the fields of the fatherless!
11 Porque o Defensor deles é poderoso; ele disputará a causa deles contra ti.
For their avenger is mighty; He will maintain their cause against thee.
12 Aplica teu coração à disciplina, e teus ouvidos às palavras de conhecimento.
Apply thy heart to instruction, And thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Não retires a disciplina do jovem; quando lhe bateres com a vara, nem [por isso] morrerá.
Withhold not correction from a child; If thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
Beat him thyself with the rod, And thou shalt rescue him from the underworld. (Sheol h7585)
15 Meu filho, se teu coração for sábio, meu coração se alegrará, e eu também.
My son, if thy heart be wise, My heart shall rejoice, even mine;
16 Meu interior saltará de alegria quando teus lábios falarem coisas corretas.
Yea, my reins shall exult, When thy lips speak right things.
17 Teu coração não inveje aos pecadores; porém [permanece] no temor ao SENHOR o dia todo;
Let not thy heart envy sinners, But continue thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long;
18 Porque certamente há um [bom] futuro [para ti], e tua expectativa não será cortada.
For surely there shall be a reward, And thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19 Ouve, filho meu, e sê sábio; e conduz teu coração no caminho [correto].
Hear thou, my son, and be wise; And let thy heart go forward in the way!
20 Não esteja entre os beberrões de vinho, [nem] entre os comilões de carne.
Be not thou among winebibbers, And riotous eaters of flesh;
21 Porque o beberrão e o comilão empobrecerão; e a sonolência os faz vestir trapos.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
22 Ouve a teu pai, que te gerou; e não desprezes a tua mãe, quando ela envelhecer.
Hearken to thy father, who begat thee, And despise not thy mother when she is old.
23 Compra a verdade, e não a vendas; [faze o mesmo com] a sabedoria, a disciplina e a prudência.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; Buy wisdom and instruction and understanding.
24 O pai do justo muito se alegrará; aquele que gerar o sábio se encherá de alegria por causa dele.
The father of a righteous man shall greatly rejoice; Yea, he who begetteth a wise child shall have joy in him.
25 Teu pai e tua mãe se alegrarão; aquela te te gerou se encherá de alegria.
Let thy father and thy mother have joy; Yea, let her that bore thee rejoice!
26 Meu filho, dá para mim teu coração, e que teus olhos prestem atenção em meus caminhos.
My son, give me thy heart, And let thine eyes observe my ways!
27 Porque a prostituta é [como] uma cova profunda, e a estranha [como] um poço estreito.
For a harlot is a deep ditch; Yea, a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28 Também ela fica espreitando como um ladrão, e acrescenta transgressores entre os homens.
Like a robber she lieth in wait, And increaseth the treacherous among men.
29 De quem são os ais? De quem são os sofrimentos? De quem são as lutas? De quem são as queixas? De quem são as feridas desnecessárias? De quem são os olhos vermelhos?
Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who anxiety? Who wounds without cause? Who dimness of eyes?
30 São daqueles que gastam tempo junto ao vinho, daqueles que andam em busca da bebida misturada.
They that tarry long at the wine; They that go in to seek mixed wine.
31 Não prestes atenção ao vinho quando se mostra vermelho, quando brilha no copo e escorre suavemente,
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly.
32 [Pois] seu fim é [como] mordida de cobra, e picará como uma víbora.
At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.
33 Teus olhos verão [coisas] estranhas, e teu coração falará perversidades;
Thine eyes will look upon strange women, And thy heart will utter perverse things.
34 E serás como o que dorme no meio do mar, e como o que dorme no topo do mastro.
Yea, thou shalt be as one that lieth down in the midst of the sea, And as one that lieth down upon the top of a mast.
35 [E dirás]: Espancaram-me, mas não senti dor; bateram em mim, mas não senti; quando virei a despertar? Vou buscar mais uma [bebida].
They have stricken me [[shalt thou say]], —I suffered no pain! They have beaten me, —I felt it not! When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
