Mateus 3
1 E naqueles dias veio João Batista, pregando no deserto da Judeia,
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 E dizendo: Arrependei-vos, porque perto está o Reino dos céus.
saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 Porque este é aquele que foi declarado pelo profeta Isaías, que disse: Voz do que clama no deserto: “Preparai o caminho do Senhor; endireitai suas veredas”.
For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths!”
4 Este João tinha sua roupa de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro ao redor de sua cintura, e seu alimento era gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
And John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Então vinham até ele [moradores] de Jerusalém, de toda a Judeia, e de toda a região próxima do Jordão;
Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the country about the Jordan;
6 E eram por ele batizados no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Mas quando ele viu muitos dos fariseus e dos saduceus que vinham ao batismo, disse-lhes: Ninhada de víboras! Quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira futura?
But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to be baptized, he said to them, Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Dai, pois, fruto condizente com o arrependimento.
Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance,
9 E não imagineis, dizendo em vós mesmos: “Temos por pai a Abraão”, porque eu vos digo que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer surgir filhos a Abraão.
and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
10 E agora o machado está posto à raiz das árvores; portanto toda árvore que não dá bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo.
And already is the axe lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that beareth not good fruit is to be cut down, and cast into the fire.
11 Realmente eu vos batizo com água para arrependimento, mas aquele que vem após mim é mais poderoso do que eu; suas sandálias não sou digno de levar. Ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.
I indeed baptize you in water, for repentance; but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to bear; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
12 Ele tem sua pá na mão; limpará sua eira, e recolherá seu trigo no celeiro; mas queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apaga.
His winnowing-shovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
13 Então Jesus veio da Galileia ao Jordão até João para ser por ele batizado.
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14 Mas [João] lhe impedia, dizendo: Eu preciso ser batizado por ti, e tu vens a mim?
But John opposed him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and dost thou come to me?
15 Porém Jesus lhe respondeu: Permite por agora, porque assim nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então ele o permitiu.
And Jesus answering said to him, Suffer it now; for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 E tendo Jesus sido batizado, subiu logo da água. E eis que os céus se abriram, e ele viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como uma pomba, vindo sobre ele.
And Jesus, as soon as he was baptized, went up from the water; and, lo! the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God, descending like a dove, coming upon him.
17 E eis uma voz dos céus, dizendo: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me agrado.
And lo! a voice from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
