Josué 9

1 E aconteceu que quando ouviram estas coisas todos os reis que estavam desta parte do Jordão, tanto nas montanhas como nas planícies, e em toda a costa do grande mar diante do Líbano, os heteus, amorreus, cananeus, perizeus, heveus, e jebuseus;

All the kings west of the Jordan heard what had happened. These included the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites who lived in the hill country, the lowlands, and along the coast as far as Lebanon.

2 Juntaram-se em unidade, de um acordo, para lutar contra Josué e Israel.

So they gathered to fight together as a united army against Joshua and the Israelites.

3 Mas os moradores de Gibeão, quando ouviram o que Josué havia feito a Jericó e a Ai,

But when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

4 Eles usaram também de astúcia; pois foram e fingiram-se embaixadores, e tomaram sacos anciãos sobre seus asnos, e odres anciãos de vinho, rasgados e remendados,

they decided on a cunning plan. They sent messengers to Joshua, their donkeys wearing worn-out saddles and carrying old wineskins that were torn and patched.

5 E sapatos velhos e remendados em seus pés, com roupas velhas sobre si; e todo aquele pão que traziam para o caminho, seco e mofado.

They put on worn sandals that had been mended and wore old clothes. All their bread was dry and moldy.

6 Assim vieram a Josué ao acampamento em Gilgal, e disseram-lhe a ele e aos de Israel: Nós viemos da terra muito distante: fazei, pois, agora conosco aliança.

They went to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and told him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a land far away, so please make a treaty with us.”

7 E os de Israel responderam aos heveus: Talvez vós habiteis em meio de nós: como pois poderemos nós fazer aliança convosco?

But the Israelites said to the Hivites, “Maybe you live close by. If you do, we cannot make a treaty with you.”

8 E eles responderam a Josué: Nós somos teus servos. E Josué lhes disse: Quem sois vós e de onde vindes?

“We are your servants,” they replied. “But who are you? Where do you come from?” Joshua asked.

9 E eles responderam: Teus servos vieram de muito distantes terras, pela fama do SENHOR teu Deus; porque ouvimos sua fama, e todas as coisas que fez em Egito,

“Your servants have come from a land far away,” they replied. “For we have heard of the reputation of the Lord your God, and reports of all that he did in Egypt,

10 E tudo o que fez aos dois reis dos amorreus que estavam da outra parte do Jordão; a Seom rei de Hesbom, e a Ogue rei de Basã, que estava em Astarote.

and what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan—to Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth.

11 Pelo qual nossos anciãos e todos os moradores de nossa terra nos disseram: Tomai em vossas mãos provisão para o caminho, e ide ao encontro deles, e dizei-lhes: Nós somos vossos servos, e fazei agora conosco aliança.

So our leaders and everyone who lives in our land told us: Take what you need with you for the journey. Go and meet with them, and tell them, ‘We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’

12 Este nosso pão tomamos quente de nossas casas para o caminho o dia que saímos para vir a vós; e ei-lo aqui agora que está seco e mofado:

Look at this bread. It was warm when we took it from our houses on the day we set out to come here. But now it's dry and moldy, as you can see.

13 Estes odres de vinho também os enchemos novos; ei-los aqui já rasgados: também estes nossas roupas e nossos sapatos estão já velhos por causa do muito longo caminho.

These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look at them now—they're split and damaged. These clothes of ours and our sandals are all worn out because the journey took so long.”

14 E os homens de Israel tomaram de sua provisão do caminho, e não perguntaram à boca do SENHOR.

The Israelites tried some of the food. However, they did not consult the Lord.

15 E Josué fez paz com eles, e estabeleceu com eles que lhes deixaria a vida: também os príncipes da congregação lhes juraram.

Then Joshua made a treaty with them, promising to spare their lives, and the leaders of the assembly swore an oath to guarantee it.

16 Passados três dias depois que fizeram com eles o concerto, ouviram como eram seus vizinhos, e que habitavam em meio deles.

Three days after they had made the treaty, the Israelites learned that the Gibeonites lived nearby, right among them!

17 E partiram-se os filhos de Israel, e ao terceiro dia chegaram a suas cidades: e suas cidades eram Gibeão, Quefira, Beerote, e Quiriate-Jearim.

The Israelites left to go to the Gibeonite towns, and arrived there on the third day. The towns were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

18 E não os feriram os filhos de Israel, porquanto os príncipes da congregação lhes haviam jurado pelo SENHOR o Deus de Israel. E toda a congregação murmurava contra os príncipes.

But the Israelites did not attack them because of the treaty sworn by the leaders of the assembly in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. At this all the Israelites protested against the leaders.

19 Mas todos os príncipes responderam a toda a congregação: Nós lhes juramos pelo SENHOR Deus de Israel; portanto, agora não lhes podemos tocar.

But the leaders replied to the people, “We swore to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, so we cannot lay a hand on them now.

20 Isto faremos com eles: lhes deixaremos viver, para que não venha ira sobre nós por causa do juramento que lhes fizemos.

So this is what we're going to do to them. We'll let them live, so that we won't be punished for breaking the oath that we swore to them.”

21 E os príncipes lhes disseram: Vivam; mas sejam lenhadores e carregadores de água para toda a congregação, como os príncipes lhes disseram.

The leaders concluded, “Let them live.” So the Gibeonites became woodcutters and water-carriers in service to the entire assembly, as the Israelite leaders had ordered.

22 E chamando-os Josué, lhes falou dizendo: Por que nos enganastes, dizendo, Habitamos muito longe de vós; uma vez que morais em meio de nós?

Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and asked them, “Why did you trick us? You told us, ‘We live a long way from you,’ but you live right next door to us!

23 Vós pois agora sois malditos, e não faltará de vós servo, e quem corte a lenha e tire a água para a casa de meu Deus.

Consequently you are under a curse. From now on you shall forever be servants, woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of my God.”

24 E eles responderam a Josué, e disseram: Quando foi dado a entender a teus servos, que o SENHOR teu Deus havia mandado a Moisés seu servo que vos havia de dar toda a terra, e que havia de destruir todos os moradores da terra diante de vós, por isto temos muito medo de vós por nossas vidas, e fizemos isto.

They answered Joshua, “We your servants were told very clearly that the Lord your God had ordered Moses to give you all this land, and that all its inhabitants were to be wiped out before you. So we really feared for our lives because of you. That's why we did what we did.

25 Agora pois, eis-nos aqui em tua mão; o que te parecer bom e correto fazer de nós, faze-o.

Now we're in your hands. Do to us what you think is right and just.”

26 E ele o fez assim; que os livrou da mão dos filhos de Israel, para que não os matassem.

Joshua did as he had said. He saved them from the Israelites, so that they did not kill them.

27 E constituiu-os Josué aquele dia por lenhadores e carregadores de água para a congregação e para o altar do SENHOR, no lugar que ele escolhesse: o que são até hoje.

That day Joshua made them woodcutters and water-carriers in service to the entire assembly and for the altar of the Lord wherever the Lord should choose. That is what they do right up to this very day.
