Eclesiastes 10
1 [Assim como] as moscas mortas fazem cheirar mal do óleo do perfumador, [assim também] um pouco de tolice se sobrepõe à sabedoria e honra.
Dead flies make the ointment of the perfumer fetid and putrid; so doth a little folly outweigh wisdom and honour.
2 O coração do sábio [está] à sua direita; mas o coração do tolo [está] à sua esquerda.
A wise man's understanding is at his right hand; but a fool's understanding at his left.
3 E até quando o tolo vai pelo caminho, falta-lhe [bom-senso em seu] coração, e diz a todos que é ele é tolo.
Yea also, when a fool walketh by the way, his understanding faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.
4 Se o espírito de um chefe se levantar contra ti, não deixes teu lugar, porque a calma aquieta grandes ofensas.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.
5 Há um mal que vi abaixo do sol, um [tipo de] erro que é proveniente dos que têm autoridade:
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, like an error which proceedeth from a ruler:
6 Põem o tolo em cargos elevados, mas os ricos sentam em lugares baixos.
Folly is set on great heights, and the rich sit in low place.
7 Vi servos a cavalo, e príncipes que andavam [a pé] como [se fossem] servos sobre a terra.
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 Quem cavar uma cova, nela cairá; e quem romper um muro, uma cobra o morderá.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a fence, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Quem extrai pedras, por elas será ferido; e quem parte lenha, correrá perigo por ela.
Whoso quarrieth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood is endangered thereby.
10 Se o ferro está embotado, e não afiar o corte, então deve se pôr mais forças; mas a sabedoria é proveitosa para se ter sucesso.
If the iron be blunt, and one do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength; but wisdom is profitable to direct.
11 Se a cobra morder sem estar encantada, então proveito nenhum tem a fala do encantador.
If the serpent bite before it is charmed, then the charmer hath no advantage.
12 As palavras da boca do sábio são agradáveis; porém os lábios do tolo o devoram.
The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 O princípio das palavras de sua boca é tolice; e o fim de sua boca [é] uma loucura ruim.
The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is grievous madness.
14 O tolo multiplica as palavras, [porém] ninguém sabe o que virá no futuro; e quem lhe fará saber o que será depois dele?
A fool also multiplieth words; yet man knoweth not what shall be; and that which shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 O trabalho dos tolos lhes traz cansaço, porque não sabem ir à cidade.
The labour of fools wearieth every one of them, for he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 Ai de ti, ó terra cujo rei é um menino, e cujos príncipes comem pela madrugada!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a boy, and thy princes feast in the morning!
17 Bem-aventurada é tu, ó terra, cujo rei é filho de nobres, e cujos príncipes comem no tempo [devido], para se fortalecerem, e não para se embebedarem!
Happy art thou, O land, when thy king is a free man, and thy princes eat in due season, in strength, and not in drunkenness!
18 Pela muita preguiça o teto se deteriora; e pala frouxidão das mãos a casa tem goteiras.
By slothfulness the rafters sink in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.
19 Para rir se fazem banquetes, e o vinho alegra aos vivos; mas o dinheiro responde por tudo.
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things.
20 Nem mesmo em pensamento amaldiçoes ao rei, nem também no interior de teu quarto amaldiçoes ao rico, porque as aves dos céus levam o que foi falado, e os que tem asas contam o que foi dito.
Curse not the king, no, not in thy thought, and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber; for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
