Deuteronômio 20
1 Quando saíres à guerra contra teus inimigos, e vires cavalos e carros, um povo maior que tu, não tenhas medo deles, que o SENHOR teu Deus é contigo, o qual te tirou da terra do Egito.
When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, is with you.
2 E será que, quando vos aproximardes para combater, chegará o sacerdote, e falará ao povo,
It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,
3 E lhes dirá: Ouve, Israel, vós vos juntais hoje em batalha contra vossos inimigos: não se amoleça vosso coração, não temais, não vos alarmeis, nem tampouco vos desanimeis diante deles;
and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near today to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;
4 Que o SENHOR vosso Deus anda convosco, para lutar por vós contra vossos inimigos, para vos salvar.
for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”
5 E os oficiais falarão ao povo, dizendo: Quem edificou casa nova, e não a dedicou? Vá, e volte-se à sua casa, para que talvez não morra na batalha, e outro algum a dedique.
The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6 E quem plantou vinha, e não fez comum uso dela? Vá, e volte-se à sua casa, para que talvez não morra na batalha, e outro alguém a desfrute.
What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit.
7 E quem se desposou com mulher, e não a tomou? Vá, e volte-se à sua casa, para que talvez não morra na batalha, e algum outro a tome.
What man is there who has pledged to be married to a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.”
8 E tornarão os oficiais a falar ao povo, e dirão: Quem é homem medroso e tenro de coração? Vá, e volte-se à sua casa, e não derreta o coração de seus irmãos, como seu coração.
The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.”
9 E será que, quando os oficiais acabarem de falar ao povo, então os capitães dos exércitos mandarão diante do povo.
It shall be, when the officers have finished speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people.
10 Quando te aproximares a uma cidade para combatê-la, lhe oferecerás a paz.
When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.
11 E será que, se te responder, Paz, e te abrir, todo o povo que nela for achado te serão tributários, e te servirão.
It shall be, if it gives you answer of peace and opens to you, then it shall be that all the people who are found therein shall become forced laborers to you, and shall serve you.
12 Mas se não fizer paz contigo, e empreender contigo guerra, e a cercares,
If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it.
13 Logo que o SENHOR teu Deus a entregar em tua mão, ferirás a todo homem seu a fio de espada.
When Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword;
14 Somente as mulheres e as crianças, e os animais, e todo o que houver na cidade, todos os seus despojos, tomarás para ti: e comerás do despojo de teus inimigos, os quais o SENHOR teu Deus te entregou.
but the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its plunder, you shall take for plunder for yourself. You may use the plunder of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.
15 Assim farás a todas as cidades que estiverem muito longe de ti, que não forem das cidades destas nações.
Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.
16 Porém das cidades destes povos que o SENHOR teu Deus te dá por herança, nenhuma pessoa deixarás com vida;
But of the cities of these peoples that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;
17 Antes por completo os destruirás: aos heteus, e aos amorreus, e aos cananeus, e aos perizeus, e aos heveus, e aos jebuseus; como o SENHOR teu Deus te mandou:
but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as Yahweh your God has commanded you;
18 Para que não vos ensinem a fazer segundo todas suas abominações, que eles fazem a seus deuses, e pequeis contra o SENHOR vosso Deus.
that they not teach you to follow all their abominations, which they have done for their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.
19 Quando puseres cerco a alguma cidade, lutando contra ela muitos dias para tomá-la, não destruas seu arvoredo metendo nele machado, porque dele comerás; e não o cortarás, que não é homem a árvore do campo para vir contra ti no cerco.
When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; for you may eat of them. You shall not cut them down, for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged by you?
20 Mas a árvore que souberes que não é árvore para comer, o destruirás e o cortarás, e constrói baluarte contra a cidade que luta contigo, até subjugá-la.
Only the trees that you know are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down. You shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.
