Jó 4
1 Então respondeu Eliphaz o temanita, e disse:
Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:
2 Se intentarmos falar-te, enfadar-te-ás? mas quem poderia conter as palavras?
If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?
3 Eis que ensinaste a muitos, e esforçaste as mãos fracas.
Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:
4 As tuas palavras levantaram os que tropeçavam e os joelhos desfalecentes fortificaste.
Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:
5 Mas agora a ti te vem, e te enfadas: e, tocando-te a ti, te perturbas.
But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.
6 Porventura não era o teu temor de Deus a tua confiança, e a tua esperança a sinceridade dos teus caminhos?
Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?
7 Lembra-te agora qual é o inocente que jamais perecesse? e onde foram os sinceros destruídos?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?
8 Como eu tenho visto, os que lavram iniquidade, e semeam trabalho segam o mesmo.
On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,
9 Com o bafo de Deus perecem; e com o assopro da sua ira se consomem.
Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.
10 O bramido do leão, e a voz do leão feroz, e os dentes dos leõezinhos se quebrantam.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:
11 Perece o leão velho, porque não há preza; e os filhos da leoa andam esparzidos.
The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
12 Uma palavra se me disse em segredo; e os meus ouvidos perceberam um sussurro dela.
Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.
13 Entre imaginações de visões da noite, quando cai sobre os homens o sono profundo;
In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,
14 Sobreveiu-me o espanto e o tremor, e todos os meus ossos estremeceram.
Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:
15 Então um espírito passou por diante de mim; fêz-me arrepiar os cabelos da minha carne;
And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Parou ele, porém não conheci a sua feição; um vulto estava diante dos meus olhos: e, calando-me, ouvi uma voz que dizia:
There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:
17 Seria porventura o homem mais justo do que Deus? seria porventura o varão mais puro do que o seu criador?
Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18 Eis que nos seus servos não confiaria, e aos seus anjos imputaria loucura:
Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:
19 Quanto menos naqueles que habitam em casas de lodo, cujo fundamento está no pó, e são machucados como a traça!
How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?
20 Desde a manhã até à tarde são despedaçados: e eternamente perecem sem que disso se faça caso.
From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.
21 Porventura se não passa com eles a sua excelência? morrem, porém sem sabedoria.
And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
